Ministry E-Letters

Join Our Mailing List!

For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Announcement

I am pleased to announce that, effective October 1, the Reverend Canon Ted Holt and the Reverend N. Jean Rogers will be joining St. Philip's staff as Interim Assistants to the Rector. Their coming on board during this transition time offers the not-yet-identified incoming Rector the unprecedented opportunity to eventually tailor a clergy staff to coordinate with his or her own gifts in ministry. I am most grateful for the work of the Holy Spirit in enabling this almost seamless transition.

Ted and Jean introduce themselves below. Please greet them warmly on Sunday, October 4.

Faithfully,
The Rev'd Canon Frank H. Clark
Interim Rector

The Rev. Canon Ted Holt
The Rev. Canon Ted Holt Born in San Francisco in October 1941, Ted lived briefly in California and Nevada before arriving in Tennessee at the age of five. The son, grandson, and great-grandson of Episcopal priests, he perceived a call to the ministry while a student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and upon graduation was immediately enrolled at the School of Theology of the University of the South, Sewanee. Ordained Deacon in 1968 and Priest in 1969, he served two parishes in Tennessee before accepting a call as Associate Rector at Holy Trinity, West Palm Beach, Florida. Then followed an internship and residency in clinical pastoral education, with emphasis on alcohol/drug and psychiatric chaplaincy. This training led to a variety of positions that included drug counselor in a minimum security prison, chaplain in a community mental health center, social worker with Florida state epilepsy services, and private psychotherapy practice. Returning to parish ministry, he served 12 years as Associate for Pastoral Care at Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida. During that time he was instrumental in founding the Center for Jungian Studies of Southeast Florida, and led many parish programs that centered on the relationship between Christian theology and the depth psychology of C.G. Jung. From 1993 until his retirement in 2007, Canon Holt was Rector of St. Francis-in-the-Valley, Green Valley. During those years the parish grew to a congregation of 700 and did over $2M in new construction. Since retirement he has served as Interim Rector in two Diocese of Arizona parishes, as well as in a parish in France. In 2012 he moved from Oro Valley to Atlanta, then returned to live in Green Valley in July of 2015. He is married to Diane, has three grown children, and eight grandchildren. He enjoys traveling abroad and (with his 5-string banjo) singing folk music.

The Rev. N. Jean Rogers
The Rev. N. Jean Rogers Jean spent 20 years in her first career as a public school teacher and administrator. She was called to the priesthood and ordained in 1991 in Washington, D.C. After working as the Assistant to the Rector at St. Patrick's, Washington, D.C., and as Chaplain at Beauvoir Elementary School on the National Cathedral Close, she served as Vicar on the Paiute Indian Reservation in Nevada. In 1994, Jean, a native Arizonan, returned to Arizona to serve as the Rector of St. Andrew's, Nogales, until 2003. During that time Jean served two terms on the Diocesan Standing Committee. In 1997 Jean was instrumental in establishing St. Andrew's Preschool and Child Care Center. She now serves as president of the preschool board, which attained a Quality First 3 Star rating in 2015. Jean has also maintained her membership with St. Andrew's Daughters of the King chapter, serving as chaplain. Since her retirement, Jean was an Interim Rector at St. Francis, Green Valley, a diocesan supply priest, and has now been at St. Philip's for 4 years as an Affiliated Clergy. Jean is looking forward to serving as an Interim Assistant, working with Canon Clark and Interim Assistant, the Rev. Canon Ted Holt, with whom she has had a long working relationship before and after her retirement. Jean would like the St. Philip's community to know that she is available by email: Jean.Rogers@stphilipstucson.org or by phone (299-6421, ext. 44). John, Jean's husband, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a retired energy conservation engineer. Before retiring, John worked for the Veteran's Administration and the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. Jean and John live on a ridge overlooking Tubac with their dog, a burro, and a horse. They have four children and six grandchildren.

This Sunday

Parish Potluck Hospitality
The Parish Potluck Hospitality Table on Sunday, October 4, will be hosted by parishioners whose last names begin with S-Z. For families who choose to participate, it is suggested that you bring food in three categories: 1. Sweet Treats; 2. Healthy Snacks (fruit, cheese, whole grain breads, low calorie muffins, gluten or peanut free snacks, etc.); 3. "Kid Friendly Snacks." If possible, food contributions should be at the table shortly after the 7:45 service so people attending that service can enjoy the food and hospitality.

First Sunday Food Drive
On Sunday, October 4, St. Philip's Food Pantry ministry will be accepting donations of nonperishable food in unbreakable containers. Desired items are canned meat and meat entrees, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned beans, dried pasta and canned pasta sauce, soup, peanut butter, and cereal. We also gratefully accept checks made out to St. Philip's with "Food Pantry" on the memo line.

First Sunday Music October 4
Franz Josef Haydn Please join us for our First Sunday Music on Sunday, October 4, when the St. Philip's Singers, Canterbury Choir, Canterbury Apprentices, and Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Woosug Kang present Haydn's "Lord Nelson Mass" at the 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services in the context of the liturgy. Written in 1798, this mass has been called "Haydn's greatest composition," highlighting the soloists and chorus while allowing the orchestra to play a prominent role. The summer of 1798 was a terrifying time for Austria, and when Haydn finished this mass, he gave it the title Missa in Angustiis (mass for troubled times). What Haydn did not know when he wrote the mass was that on 1 August, Napoleon had been dealt a stunning defeat in the Battle of the Nile by British forces led by Admiral Horatio Nelson. Because of this coincidence, the mass gradually acquired the nickname Lord Nelson Mass. Because the Kyrie movement will be used as opening voluntary, please plan to arrive about 10 minutes before service time.

"Spiritual Gifts" Open House
All are invited to attend this year's Open House on Sunday, October 4, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the Murphey Gallery. There will be information provided and representatives of numerous ministries available at the Open House to discuss ways in which their ministries might be a great fit for the special gifts we offer. And there will be Food Trucks offering their delicious fare to fuel our discussions.

Important Event

Time to Register for Day of Discovery October 31
Please plan to attend the Day of Discovery on Saturday, October 31, the first event in our rector search process. We will gather to discover a desired future for St. Philip's.

The Day of Discovery will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until about 3 p.m. Lunch is included. Exciting children's activities (and nursery care) will be provided.

This is an extremely important first step in our search for a new rector. It is vital for as many St. Philippians as possible to be involved, so please make a note of the date and register soon. All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend. The objectives for the day are 1) to discover our parish community's strengths and 2) to express how these strengths align with the core values of our parish community. In this way, we will discover how God has gifted us to minister in the wider community. During this process we will also discover our dreams for the future of St. Philip's In The Hills. The Day of Discovery is the primary opportunity for members and friends of St. Philip's to provide input into the search process.

Sign up by clicking here or by calling the church office at 299-6421.
