For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.
If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.
We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Summer Lecture Series Continues The University of Arizona Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies joins with St. Philip's to present their annual summer lecture series, entitled "Protestantism and the Anglican Church in the Seventeenth Century." This series of lectures depicts major events in this unstable but exciting century, one in which the Anglican Church played a major part. There will be two more Sunday sessions at 10:15 a.m. in the Music Center: August 23 (Religious Issues in the English Revolution. "'Puritans, Hereticks, Schismaticks, Sectaries, [and] disturbers of the publike peace': The Role of Religion in the English Civil Wars, 1642-1651." Kristen Coan, doctoral student, presenting) and August 30 ("'Such a dispensing power hath often been declared illegal': the Seven Bishops as Midwives of the Glorious Revolution." Adam Bonikowske, doctoral student, presenting). You are invited to attend and help support these future scholars of Reformation history. "Seasoned" Singles Lunch "Seasoned" Singles are invited to get together for a simple lunch in the East Gallery after the 11:15 a.m. service on Sunday, August 30. Does Your Child Like to Sing? We offer the opportunity to all children ages 4 through high school to join one of the premier children's choir programs in the Southwest. Weekly rehearsals and twice-monthly Sunday morning church services offer music, fellowship, and formation. Children also lead monthly Choral Evensong on one Sunday afternoon each month during the choir season, October-May. We are the only children's choir to offer this beautiful ancient service in Arizona! It is not necessary to be a member of St. Philip's to belong to our choir! Opportunities include music education, yearly scholarships to attend outstanding summer courses held by the Royal School of Church Music in America, and periodic choir trips in the US and the UK. The friendships built in choir last a lifetime, and the musical and leadership skills are a lifelong gift. Come join us! For more information, please contact St. Philip's Director of Music Woosug Kang or call 299-6421, ext. 19. Sign Up Now for St. Philip's Adult Choirs St. Philip's adult choirs welcome all who can sing and fulfill attendance requirements. There are two adult choirs. The St. Philip's Singers lead worship at the 9 a.m. service on Sunday mornings September through May and on special feast days. Canterbury Choir is an auditioned, select ensemble devoted to the performance of the finest sacred music in the context of the liturgy. The choir sings at the 11:15 a.m. Eucharist on Sunday mornings, and at several weekday liturgies during the church year, September-May. In addition, they perform concerts both in Tucson and Southern Arizona. Music repertoire spans the entire Western musical history, from Gregorian chant to Arvo Part. Casa Maria Thanks You
Casa Maria Ministry would like to thank the 31 people who turned out to help make sandwiches on August 15, especially the kitchen crew, and the families who brought children. Our next sandwich-making session will be Friday, September 12. Join us (7:30 a.m. in the East Gallery) to help our neighbors in need! After School Music Program Seeks Helpers If you really want to be current and know what's going on, join us and hang out with the children. At the After School Music and Homework Program we have wonderful experienced teams of people for you to join and have some fun, change a child's life, and learn what is really going on. You don't have to be musical - mostly we need homework helpers. Pick a day Monday through Wednesday and volunteer from 2:45 to 5 p.m. (just 2 1/2 hours). Or choose Thursday (early release day) and come from 1 to 3 or 3 to 5. There are two teams that day. We also need substitutes, volunteers who can fill in for a couple of months until our winter members return. We welcome people who have special gifts they would like to teach us or share when we have longer days. We are flexible and fun ... come join the fun. Call Barby 237-8881 or see me at coffee hour. Laundry as Liturgy Laundry Love, an Outreach Ministry of St. Philip's, takes place on the second Wednesday of each month. Members of our Come and See community have partnered with the national Laundry Love initiative to lead this ministry, which helps to wash the clothes and bedding of individuals and/or families living in poverty while offering compassion, conversation, and connections with community resources. The Laundry Love ministry welcomes you to join us. We are actively seeking volunteers and donations. To volunteer for an evening of Laundry Love, contact Patty. To make a financial donation, make your check payable to St. Philip's ("Laundry Love" on the memo line). Adult Education Coordinator Sought

Book Review: Strange Glory: A Life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer Dietrich Bonhoeffer is known to most of us for his book Nachfolge (The Cost of Discipleship, in English) or perhaps Letters and Papers from Prison. We know of him as a resister against Hitler's Third Reich in Germany and ultimately hanged as a traitor on April 9, 1945 - just days before the Allied troops liberated the Flossenburg Concentration Camp on April 23, 1945. Dr. Charles Marsh, professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia, brings Bonhoeffer to life in his full complexities with his recent book Strange Glory: A Life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer published in 2014.
