Ministry E-Letters

Join Our Mailing List!

For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

What's Going On

back to school "Back to School" Sunday
The new school year is upon us! This Sunday, August 2, we will celebrate "Back to School Sunday," with blessing of the backpacks and other symbols of schoolwork and occupation, at the 9 a.m. service. Coffee Hour for the whole parish will be a potluck celebration in the Murphey Gallery. Bring your favorite finger food and join in the fun! This will also be our opportunity to meet the Rev. Canon Clark and his wife, Carol, as well as hear updates from the Wardens and Vestry. See you there!

As is our custom on first Sundays, donations of nonperishable food for St. Philip's food pantry, and paperback books for Read Between the Bars, will be gratefully accepted. However, Just Coffee, fair-trade coffee that supports a cooperative of coffee growers in Mexico, will be sold on Sunday, August 9, rather than the usual first Sunday of the month.

The Rev. Canon Frank Clark Meet the Rev. Canon Frank Clark
Our new Interim Rector, the Rev. Canon Frank Clark, officially began his tenure at St. Philip's on August 1. He will celebrate at all services on Sunday, August 2. During Coffee Hour in the Murphey Gallery, we will have the opportunity to gather with him and his wife, Carol. Canon Clark is also serving as our Search Consultant, and he will provide us with some updates during the 10:15 a.m. forum.

You can read more about Canon Clark here.

As of July 31, the Rev. Canon John Kitagawa is officially retired as St. Philip's Rector. We wish him and Kathy the best as their future unfolds. The Canons prescribe that the departing priest must absent himself from the parish until the new permanent Rector has served for at least a year. Although we will miss the Kitagawas, this is the most compassionate solution for all concerned. It provides them an opportunity to transition into their lives after St. Philip's, and it provides parishioners an opportunity to look forward, with the help of the Interim Rector, to St. Philip's future under new leadership.

Summer Lecture Series Begins August 9
The University of Arizona Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies joins with St. Philip's to present their annual summer lecture series, entitled "Protestantism and the Anglican Church in the Seventeenth Century," on Sundays in August beginning August 9, at 10:15 a.m. in the Music Center. This series of lectures will depict major events in this unstable but exciting century, one in which the Anglican Church played a major part. You are invited to attend and help support these future scholars of Reformation history.

Matching Grant for St. Philip's Ministry Endowment
An anonymous donor has committed to making a challenge grant of up to $50,000 - matching one dollar for every dollar given to St Philip's Ministry Endowment Fund specifically in response to this challenge by 30 May 2016. These endowment monies will support the general ministries of St. Philip's into the future. Please consider "doubling" the impact of your endowment gift by making a gift in the next few months and taking advantage of this matching grant. No amount is too small. For further details about the challenge grant or the Ministry Endowment Fund, please contact a member of the Ministry Endowment Fund Committee: Sally Larsen (Chair), Jim Prescott-Smith (Secretary), Bob Couch, James Humphreys, or Barbara Peck. For more information about the Ministry Endowment Fund, click here.

Bishops on the Border In the Renouf/Nelson Library:
Two Books Addressing Immigration Issues
The Rev. Paul Buckwalter has reviewed two books that address immigration issue. "Bishops on the Border: Pastoral Responses to Immigration" is a collection of "spiritual autobiographies" from four Arizona Bishops, including our own Bishop Kirk Smith.
