Ministry E-Letters

Join Our Mailing List!

For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Eucharist Liturgical Celebration of John and Kathy Kitagawa's Ministry
John and Kathy Kitagawa's last Sunday with us will be Sunday, June 21. We will celebrate their ministry liturgically at the 7:45, 9, and 11:15 a.m. services, with special prayers, special choral and instrumental music, and presentations. A festive Coffee Hour at 10:15 a.m. will provide an opportunity for conversation and cake in cool comfort. We have been truly blessed to have John and Kathy with us for fourteen years, and we wish them happiness as they embark on future adventures.

Friends of Music Summer Sizzlers Concert
Friends of Music's popular summer concert series returns! On Sunday, June 21, at 2 p.m. in the Church, celebrate Father's Day by bringing your dad to hear the Phoenix Brass Quintet perform chamber music that is an alternative to "music by dead composers or that will make your ears bleed." Suggested admission is $20.

June 20 Is World Refugee Day
The United Nations General Assembly established June 20 as World Refugee Day to recognize and applaud the contribution of refugees throughout the world and to raise awareness about the growing refugee crisis. You can #ShareTheJourney by joining Episcopalians across the country in prayer and celebration of the strength, resilience, and contributions of refugees in our communities. Witness refugee stories of survival and hope through the video series available here. Hover over "playlist" to find individual stories.

Gracious God, we pray for our newest neighbors, that those families who have sought refuge from the ravages of war and violence may find not only shelter and sustenance, but also a loving and supportive community in which to create a new beginning with dignity. Amen. (written by Alyssa Stebbing, Outreach Ministry Director at Trinity Episcopal Church, The Woodlands, Texas).

Sixteen singers from St. Philip's choirs and six supporters are in New York City, preparing to sing W. A. Mozart's Requiem in Carnegie Hall Saturday. This group is composed of members of UA School of Music choirs, local church choirs, and the Tucson Girls Chorus Alumni Choir, and its purpose is to provide opportunities for future music educators to gain experience rehearsing and conducting. embroidered handkerchief Fuentes Rojas/Bordado por la Paz

Violence related to the US-Mexican Drug War has caused the deaths of more than 150,000 people in Mexico. Many were innocent bystanders of random or targeted violence. Some were friends or relatives of people in drug cartels. All were children of God, worthy to be mourned and remembered. Members of Fuentes Rojas/Bordando por la Paz meet to embroider, in red thread on a man's white handkerchief, known details of the victim's death based on police records. We enjoy great conversation and fellowship as we stitch. The completed panuelos are mailed to Fuentes Rojas organizers in Mexico City to be used in public actions. You are invited into a movement of remembrance and solidarity with our neighbors who struggle each day to survive the US-Mexico Drug War in their neighborhoods, villages, towns and cities. Our taller de junio is Thursday, June 25, at 10 a.m. at El Rio Senior Center (1390 W. Speedway). Instruction is available at the taller. For more information, a list of inexpensive and easily available supplies and to RSVP, contact Suzanne.

Seasoned Singles logo "Seasoned" Singles Luncheon

RSVP if you plan to attend to Joyce Schumann, 529-7421 or Jo Ann Alldredge, 307-3379.

Parish Potluck Hospitality June 28

The next Parish Potluck Coffee Hour Hospitality Table will be on June 28, hosted by parishioners whose last names begin with G-L. For families who choose to participate, it is suggested that you bring food in three categories: 1. Sweet Treats; 2. Healthy Snacks (fruit, cheese, whole grain breads, low calorie muffins, gluten or peanut free snacks, etc.); 3. "Kid Friendly Snacks." If possible, food contributions should be at the table shortly after the 7:45 service so people attending that service can enjoy the food and hospitality.

General Convention

Thousands of Episcopalians from around the world will join together in downtown Salt Lake City for the 78th Episcopal General Convention set for June 25-July 3, at the Salt Palace Convention Center. The General Convention is the governing body of The Episcopal Church that meets every three years. The Convention is a bicameral legislature that includes the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops. The work at Convention is carried out by Deputies and Bishops representing each diocese. During its triennial meeting, Deputies and Bishops consider a wide range of important matters facing the Church. This year the election of a new Presiding Bishop is on the agenda. Our Rector, the Rev. Canon John E. Kitagawa, will be one of the Deputies from the Diocese of Arizona. He also serves as vice-chair of the Social Justice & International Policy Committee. Altar Guild Directress Carolyn McKeeman will be representing St. Philip's as a delegate to the National Altar Guild Association. Eileen and Don Veitch will be volunteering at Convention. Please keep participants in your prayers through July 3. For more information, see the official General Convention web site or click here for a simple easy-to-read resource.

Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with those who take counsel in General Convention for the renewal and mission of your Church. Teach them in all things to seek first your honor and glory. Guide them to perceive what is right, and grant them both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Daughters of the King Triennial
Daughters of the King logo Two members of Daughters of the King Faith Chapter are representing St. Philip's as delegates at Triennial in Midway, Utah, this weekend. Liz Weber and Nancy Williams will meet with 500 other Daughters from across the world for 4 days. Please keep them in your prayers, as well as all the women from all over the world who will gather there to pray and study. All women of the parish are welcome to come to our chapter meeting at 10:15 a.m. on Monday, June 29, to hear about their experiences!
