Notice from the Rector

Deacon Brigid Waszczak has informed me that Bishop Kirk Smith has asked her to work on developing women's ministries and retreats in the Diocese of Arizona as a part of her diaconal ministries.  In addition, she will serve at Episcopal Church of St. Matthew, Tucson, starting on the First Sunday of Lent. I want to thank Brigid for the many ways she has contributed to the life and ministry of St. Philip's In The Hills Parish, first as a lay person and then as a Deacon.  She has assured me that she working to make sure there is a smooth transition with the ministries she has been facilitating. Brigid will be with us next Sunday, February 15, at the 11:15 a.m. Eucharist.  We will pray over her, and you will have an opportunity to express your thanks. If you cannot be at that service, I encourage you to be in touch at least by email.

Faithfully,

John

Renewal of Vows Service
Saturday is Valentine's Day! What better occasion to renew your wedding vows or commitment promises, whether made years ago or more recently. A renewal of vows and commitment promises service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. If you are interested in participating, but haven't signed up, feel free to join us--just be sure to check in with the Celebrant in the Church by 10:30 a.m.

Processional Crosses
At the 9 a.m. service on February 15, a dedicatory prayer will be offered for the cases housing the "retired" processional crosses used for years at St. Philip's. These crosses were a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Fowler around 1946, and have been carried by many different acolytes since then. The crosses themselves date from the 16th and 17th centuries, and are of Flemish design and craftsmanship. The crucifixes are carved ivory, one of which is mounted on ebonized wood and the other on Arizona ironwood. Both are covered with gold leaf. They were originally from the W. P. Wilstach Collection in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The cases are a gift from the St. Philip's Altar Guild Memorial Fund and an anonymous donor. They were crafted by Furniture Creations from a design by parishioner Warren Edminster.

Instructed Service at 11:15 a.m.
On Sunday, February 15, the 11:15 a.m. service will be an Instructed Service -- an opportunity to learn more about the worship we experience every Sunday. Verbal and printed explanations of the parts of the service will be offered throughout, in place of a sermon. This service provides an opportunity for people new to the Episcopal Church, and even for those who are "cradle" Episcopalians, to learn more about what's behind what we do in our liturgies. Plan to attend, and invite a friend!

Evensong
This Sunday, February 15, our monthly Choral Evensong will be held at 4:00 p.m. Evensong is rooted in one of the daily monastic services that date from the medieval period, and our Evensong is based on the service that has been sung from the Book of Common Prayer from the 16th Century. This service provides the congregation time to reflect, transition from day into evening, and participate in a spiritual journey led by the choir. The Schola Cantorum and St. Nicholas Choir will sing Canticles in Bb by Stanford, Evening Hymn by Balfour-Gardiner. The service, which lasts about 45 minutes, is followed by a 30-minute organ recital, featuring David Wachter, Music Associate at Grace-St. Paul's Episcopal Church, performing Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

Ash Wednesday Services
On Ash Wednesday, March 5, St. Philip's offers four services. Holy Eucharist Rite I and Imposition of Ashes will be at 7:30 a.m. and Holy Eucharist Rite II with Imposition of Ashes will be at noon. At 5:30 p.m. there will be an All-Generations Ash Wednesday service (no Eucharist), and at 7 p.m. the St. Philip's Singers will lead a Sung Eucharist Rite II with Imposition of Ashes.

In addition, the "Ash Mob" from St. Philip's will be administering ashes at various locations around town, including the NW YMCA, Starbucks and the River Walk at Campbell, and Raging Sage. Team members will also take ashes to a women's and a men's transitional residence of Old Pueblo Community Services, as well as Campana Del Rio. Consider joining in this transformative experience -- by spending 1-2 hours that day you can be a gift while receiving immeasurable blessings. For more information call Geri Smith at 744-3230 or Rev. Vicki Hesse at 299-6421 (x33).

Sarum Rite during Lent
At the 11:15 a.m. worship services on three Sundays during Lent -- March 8, 15, and 22 -- our liturgy will be inspired by the ancient Sarum Rite of Anglican tradition. The Sarum Rite was the liturgical form used in most of the English Church prior to the introduction of the first Book of Common Prayer in 1549. In keeping with the time period of the liturgical language, the Scripture readings will be taken from the King James Bible. Incense will be used at these services. These special services will draw from ancient prayer forms that will invite our prayer and reflection through this sacred season.

J.S. Bach Bach Marathon
Please plan to join us on Saturday, February 28, for our annual Bach Marathon at St. Philip's. This celebration of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach begins at 10 a.m. with a program entitled "Light and Dark" -- organists Woosug Kang and Jeffrey Campbell explore major and minor key organ works, including preludes and fugues, a trio sonata, and chorale preludes which traverse the range of baroque affects in music of sublime genius. Follow the morning concert with a "Bach's lunch," available to order at the door. Then, at 2 p.m., a fabulous program from famed organist Dr. Kimberly Marshall, entitled "Handel and Bach -- Cosmopolitans of the Organ." Dr. Marshall makes a welcome return to the St. Philip's Holtkamp organ, in works that trace the similarities and differences between these two Baroque giants, as well as the influence on the French nineteenth century symphonic organ school. This program includes the mighty Passacagilia in c minor. More information on the Friends of Music web site. On Sunday morning, March 1, at both the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services, the St. Philip's Singers, soloists, and chamber orchestra under the direction of Woosug Kang will present Bach's uplifting Cantata 4, Christ lag in todesbanden, in the context of morning worship.
