November 16 Is Commitment Sunday

Sunday, November 16, is Commitment Sunday.  Parishioners who have yet to turn in their pledge card for 2015 will have an opportunity to do so during all the services. Pledge cards are available in the office and on St. Philip's web site (click on the "support" button). For many of you who have already sent in your pledge card, you will be invited to fill out a Gratitude Statement card. These cards will be brought forward, along with pledge envelopes and weekly offerings, during the Offertory. This collective in-gathering event is a community expression of faith, commitment to St. Philip's, and support of all of God's work that happens under the St. Philip's banner.

As of Wednesday, November 12, we have received 286 pledges for a total of $706,564. We are most grateful for this tangible expression of your commitment to grow your faith through generosity at St. Philip's.

Stewardship Witness
This year's Stewardship theme is "Growing Our Faith Through Generosity." I would ask, are generous hearts born or are they made? Are they special gifts from God which some people have and some don't?  Or can we develop or cultivate them?

I think we all have them. After all, aren't we made in the image of God who is so incredibly generous? Sometimes we just have to uncover them. Maybe practice makes perfect. Perhaps, we start out with small gifts or gestures leading up to giving in proportion to what God has given us.

That's kind of how I look at pledging or, more accurately, proportionate giving. Years ago, we started out by pledging 1% of our income.  The next year it was 1.5% percent etc. etc.
Long before we got to 5%, the "modern tithe" (so called because nowadays many people also give a percentage of their income to support other other charitable enterprises and worthy causes), I was hooked. It just grew and grew. It seemed like there was a "guiding hand" which I came to know there actually was.

Was my heart becoming generous? You tell me. I believe God had His hand in it. As my faith matured, it had become a spiritual exercise, a cornerstone of my relationship with God.

Please join me in making a thoughtful pledge no later than Sunday, which is Commitment Sunday.

Choral Evensong
This Sunday, our monthly Choral Evensong at 4 p.m. features serenely beautiful music by Orlando Gibbons, and the prolific composer Anon. who flourished in the 16th century. Sung by our fine Schola Cantorum, the service is followed by an organ recital given by Dr. James Gerber, Music Associate at All Saints' Parish in Phoenix, who will perform the complete Fifth Organ Symphony by Widor. Please join us in this beautiful liturgy for the close of day.

An Opportunity!
In these days of reduced education funding, we have an opportunity to help three local schools make life better for their students. The Children's Christmas Project kicks off today and will continue through the middle of December. Donations to this ministry will go to help children in three schools with whom we have a close association: Imago Dei, Holaway, and Rio Vista. Donations allocated to Imago Dei will go toward tuition and general expenses for at risk children who might otherwise drop out of school altogether. Amounts allocated to Holaway and Rio Vista, the schools in our After School Music Program, will go to a principal's discretionary fund to help children with items they might not otherwise be able to afford, such as eyeglasses, clean socks and underwear, and food for the weekend for a child and his/her family. These schools are so grateful for any help we can give them, so please give generously, particular in this season when we celebrate the birth of Jesus, himself a child. Please look for our table during Coffee Hour. Thanks for your compassion for these children!

Just Coffee Makes Great Gifts
A great Christmas gift--Just Coffee will be on sale twice a month before Christmas. We will be selling it during Coffee Hour on November 16 and on December 7 and 21. We have regular and decaf, beans and ground in 10 pound ($10) and 5 pound ($5) bags. This fair-trade coffee supports a cooperative of coffee growers in Mexico.

BIM logo Operation Streamline
St. Philip's parishioners are invited to join the Border and Immigration Ministry to witness Operation Streamline, the "fast track" legal process created for the purpose of deporting undocumented migrants.  Operation Streamline has received national scrutiny from advocacy groups for lack of legal due process and possible human rights violations against the defendants, including the use of shackles. You can stand in solidary with our brothers and sisters who are our neighbors by witnessing this court proceeding. We will attend Operation Streamline on Wednesday, December 10, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.  Carpool from St. Philip's departs at 12:30. To reserve space in the carpool, contact Bonnie Winn, BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org. Bring an official photo ID; you will go through a metal detector and a security check. Cameras or any other form of electronic capturing, recording, broadcasting or transmitting devices are prohibited in the courtroom. The procedure will last 90 minutes to 3 hours. If you need to leave the courtroom before the proceeding is concluded you will not be permitted to re-enter. Citizen observers are almost always in attendance.
