Ministry E-Letters

Join Our Mailing List!

For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

What's Going On

Parking Lot Notice
Portions of St. Philip's parking lot are being re-sealed and striped early this week, July 14 and 15. This includes the parking lot to the east of the office/gallery and the driveways that run in front of the church to Campbell and River. Thank you for your cooperation.

Petition Regarding Border Situation
St. Philip's Border and Immigration Ministry invites you to consider signing a petition asking President Obama to extend Deferred Enforcement Status to those arriving at our southern border from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and parts of Mexico, as well as other protections for unaccompanied minors. For more information click here.

Casa Maria Ministry Thanks You
A heart-felt thank you to the 20 folks who showed up on June 21 to help make sandwiches for the homeless. Our next sandwich-making will be Saturday, July 19, beginning at 7:30 a.m. We are collecting NEW underwear and socks, plus any serviceable summer clothes for both men and women. Please bring them to the sandwich making on July 19 (and stay to help make 850 lunches to help our neighbors in need).

Calling All Former EfM Participants
Whether you attended one year of Education for Ministry (EfM) or all four, whether you participated at your previous parish or St. Philip's ... please come to dinner on Sunday, July 20, at 5 p.m., at the home of new co-mentors Howell and Mary Herring (near St. Philip's). Beth Brouillette is co-hosting this gathering. This dinner is intended for several things: visit with old friends, meet people who participated in other EfM cohorts, learn about an EfM alumni group that Beth is interested in starting, and help the Herrings (who are new to Tucson) identify people who might be interested in joining EfM at this time. Please RSVP for directions to Beth or Mary (EfM@stphilipstucson.org) or call 299-0390.

Friends of Music Concert:
Ronstadt Generations y Los Tucsonenses
On Sunday, July 27, at 2 p.m. in the Church, Ronstadt Generations y Los Tucsonenses will present a concert of Southwestern music. This group continues the legendary musical tradition of the Ronstadt family in Tucson. Led by Michael J. Ronstadt on guitar and voice, they will present an exciting repertoire that preserves the traditional Southwestern and Mexican songs of their heritage while offering innovative original material that echoes the "melting pot" of American folk music. Suggested admission is $20. For more information click here.

Annual Summer Lecture Series Begins in August
Presented  by the UA Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies together with St. Philip's, the series explores four ways that people in medieval and early modern Europe measured the passage of life: by the human life cycle, from birth through maturity to death; by the medieval Catholic ecclesiastical calendar; by observations of the heavens; and through the eyes of Pope Gregory XIII (r. 1572-1585) and his advisors, who ended the Julian calendar in 1582. These lectures provide a unique opportunity for scholars training in the field to prepare a project and present their work to a large audience at St. Philip's.Sundays, August 3, 10, 17, and 24, at 10:15 a.m. in the Bloom Music Center. Spiritual and Theological Formation. For more information click here.

August Will Be Here Soon
The new school year is just around the corner! On Sunday, August 3, we will celebrate "Back to School Sunday," with blessing of the backpacks and other symbols of schoolwork and occupation at the 9 a.m. service. Coffee Hour for the whole parish will be held in the Children's Center Courtyard, and will be a potluck celebration. Bring your favorite finger food and join in the fun! The August 10 "Comfy Space" service at 9:15 a.m. will also feature a backpack blessing, as well as blessing of the Church School classrooms for the beginning of Church School.

Because Church School starts on Sunday, August 10. now is the time to talk to neighbors and friends, those new in the community or those who don't have a church affiliation, and invite them to St. Philip's. You don't need to wait till August -- there is children's story time during the 9 a.m. hour each Sunday until August 10, and children are always welcome in our worship services. For more information, talk to Sara Talley, our Youth Minister.

Calling All Parish Artists

It's time to complete your masterpiece -- watercolor, oil, cross-stitch, etching or whatever your medium is -- for the September All St. Philip's Gallery Exhibition this fall. This is an opportunity for all St. Philippians to showcase their artistic abilities (sorry, wall-hung work only). Information packages are available in the office. If you wish to participate, please email Sue Cross.

Education for Ministry Begins in September

Ever wish you knew more about the Bible, church history, and theology? The  Education for Ministry program (a.k.a. "EfM") has helped 80,000 people like you deepen their  knowledge and express their faith in their day-to-day lives. St. Philip's EfM program might be a good fit for you too. We're registering now for Tuesday night classes that begin September 9. For more information contact EfM mentors Mary and Howell Herring  at EfM@stphilipstucson.org.

Seeking Leaders for Quest
A number of parishioners have expressed interest in the popular Quest program. Quest helps you explore your spiritual journey and discern where the Spirit is leading, all in the context of a community of trust. We're looking to form a leadership team of people who have previously attended Quest and are interested in leading Quest groups. Please contact Linda Dewey if you would like to be a part of this ministry team.  We expect to schedule a planning meeting in late August. If you'd like to experience (but not lead) Quest, stay tuned.  Details of sessions in mid-late fall will be announced as soon as possible.
