Prayer for Memorial Day
Lord God Almighty, we remember today the personal sacrifices made by many of our fellow citizens in the service of their country. On this day we pause, however briefly, to remember and recall those who gave the last measure of their lives for their faith, their country, and their fellow compatriots in arms. Grant that we and all the citizens of this land may have the grace to honor their good deeds as in righteousness we strive for peace among all the people of God's creation. Give us a deep sense of reverence for life that is tempered by a passionate desire for justice. This we pray in the name of the one God who creates, redeems, and sustains. Amen.(Adapted from a prayer by the Rt. Rev. James Magness, Bishop Suffragan, Armed Services and Federal Ministries of The Episcopal Church)

Feast of the Ascension
St. Philip's will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension on Thursday, May 29, at 7 p.m. in the Church. Ascension Day is one of the earliest Christian festivals. During the 40 days after his resurrection, Jesus met several times with his disciples to instruct them on how to carry out his teachings. It is believed that on the 40th day he took them to the Mount of Olives, where they watched as he ascended to heaven. Incense will be used at the Ascension Day service. Afterwards, Parish Life Ministry will host a festive reception in the Perry Garden. Prison Ministry
The next meeting for St. Philip's Prison Ministry will be Wednesday, May 28, at 4:30 p.m. in La Paz. We are very excited that Bishop Smith has appealed to the people of our diocese to join together in this mission. We will be talking more about this joint venture and reviewing our options and obligations set forth at our last meeting. We hope you can join us. Matthew 25:36: "I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me." Fuentes Rojas Goes PublicOn Thursday, May 29, at 11:15 a.m., Fuentes Rojas/Bordado por la Paz is again going public! Our "taller," or workshop, will be at Beyond Bread (Campbell just north of Glenn). We'll find a perfect place to sit, take time for lunch and/or a cup of coffee, and take out our panuelos and embroider together. Our aim is to announce our solidarity with victims of the US-Mexico Drug War and to gain the interest and participation of people in the broader Tucson community. We hope this is the first of many monthly "tallers" at public venues. There are a variety of places where we can meet in the coming months, indoors for the summer and outdoors when fall arrives. We'll talk about plans for being public witnesses to the victims of drug violence. Contact BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org for a list of inexpensive supplies or if you have questions. "Seasoned" Singles Potluck Seasoned Singles will gather for potluck at Joyce Schumann's home at 5:30 p.m., on Saturday, May 31. Bring a salad, vegetable dish, or dessert and the beverage of your choice. RSVP to Joyce, 529-7421, or JoAnn, 303-3379. RSVPs will get further directions to Joyce's house. Elder CircleAre you a "sage-ing" senior looking for opportunities to share your wisdom, cultivate your value as an Elder, deepen self-awareness, and develop a satisfying spirituality? Connect with like-minded people about the gifts and challenges of aging and of living a full, vibrant and vital life. St. Philip's Elder Circle meets the last Wednesday of each month, 10:30-11:30 a.m., in Room 10 at St. Philip's. Everyone is welcome to this gathering of savvy seniors. Join us to tell the stories, tales, and insights acquired with age. Presented in partnership with the Center for Community Dialogue. Free; no RSVP needed. Info: Brigid.

Bishop's Annual Visit |
On Sunday, June 1, the Rt. Rev. Kirk Stevan Smith, Bishop of Arizona, will make his annual visit to St. Philip's. The Bishop will preach and celebrate at the 7:45, 9, and 11:15 a.m. services. The 9 a.m. service will include confirmation, reaffirmation, and reception. At the 11:15 a.m. service, incense will be used.
Special envelopes will be placed in the pews on June 1 for contributions toward the Bishop's discretionary fund. This fund is used to help clergy and their families in need.
At 10:15 a.m., Bishop Smith will lead a compelling time of spiritual exploration. He has recently found inspiration in Barbara Brown Taylor's book, "Learning to Walk in the Dark," and through her work will invite us to reflect on "shadow spirituality." Through darkness we find courage, we understand the world in new ways, and we feel God's presence around us, guiding us through things seen and unseen. The Bishop will also draw on the inspiring work of St. John of the Cross and Carl Jung in his presentation.
As is our custom on the first Sunday of each month, we will gratefully accept donations of nonperishable food offerings, to replenish St. Philip's food pantry to help our neighbors in need. The Prison Ministry is collecting paperback books to donate to Reading Between the Bars. Also, the Outreach Commission will be selling fair-trade "Just Coffee."

Pentecost
The Day of Pentecost is Sunday, June 8. Pentecost, or "50th Day," is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is one of the days appointed for Baptism, which we will celebrate at the 9:15 a.m. "Comfy Space" service (the alternative term, Whitsunday, comes from the white robes that newly baptized catechumens would wear on that day.)
To celebrate Pentecost, "the birthday of the Church," and to celebrate everyone's birthdays, Parish Life is sponsoring a "Birthday Bash" in the Murphey Gallery between the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. Come meet all those people with whom you share a birthday!
Tacheria School of Spiritual Direction Tacheria School of Spiritual Direction are now accepting applications for the next interfaith course in the training of those called to a vocation of spiritual direction or for those who are yearning for answers to their spiritual questions and want to be able to do something with this yearning. This course encompasses the beliefs of the world's major religions and is open to ordained and non-ordained men and women. Spiritual leaders from many disciplines make up the faculty and share their insights, knowledge, wisdom and experience. The School will begin in September 2014, and classes will occur monthly on the second Saturday of each month from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for two ten-month sessions (September-June). There is also a weekend retreat at the Redemptorist Retreat Center at Picture Rocks, on Friday and Saturday, January 9-10, 2015. Before acceptance into the School, interviews are conducted by Linda Williams, co-director, to discuss with each student the appropriateness of the School to their particular needs and mutual expectations of the student and School. The School is open to all persons regardless of race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, or sexual identity. Enrollment is limited and a genuine commitment to attending all of the sessions is important. Fees for the course are $500 per year not including the retreat cost of $160. A payment plan can be worked out with Linda at the time of the interview. Very limited scholarship assistance may be available. Further information is available on the Tacheria web site, from the school directors Linda or Frank Williams, 297-6098, or by email.
