St. Philip's Day May 4

saint philip Fiesta in the Plaza
Mark your calendars for our annual St. Philip's Day Celebration happening May 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Plaza. Featuring activities for all ages and a taco bar for lunch ($7 person/$20 family). Come join in the fun!

First Sunday Music: Vivaldi Gloria
The celebration of St. Philip's Day at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services will include A. Vivaldi's beloved Gloria. It will be sung by St. Philip's Singers, Canterbury Choir and Apprentices, St. Nicholas Choir and guest choir, Tucson Girls Chorus, and soloists with Chamber Orchestra. One of the most well-known composers of the Baroque period, Vivaldi has created this wonderfully joyous work for the orphanage for girls in his time, dividing the wonderful texts into several different movements that will be performed throughout the service within our liturgy. We are excited to welcome Tucson Girls Chorus to join us to celebrate this day! Be sure to come at least 10 minutes before service time so you don't miss the prelude!

Because it is the first Sunday of the month, we will gratefully accept donations of unperishable food for St. Philip's food pantry and paperback books to be sent to Reading Between the Bars. "Just Coffee" (fair-trade coffee) will be for sale. Representatives of the Labyrinth Committee will be in the Perry Garden to answer questions about remembering your mother with a commemorative brick.

Special Forum: Sumptuous and Inquisitorial Feasts
At 10:15 a.m., Dr. Kevin Justus leads a special forum, subtitled "Paulo Veronese, 16th-century Venice, and the Artistic Imagination." What to do about The Last Supper ... wait, scratch that, The Feast in the House of Levi? Feasts seem an appropriate theme for St. Philip's Day. But luxurious feasts can get one into trouble. On July 18, 1573, Veronese was summoned by the Holy Office to appear before the Inquisition accused of heresy because of just that, a feast painting. Set within the remarkable historical context of 16th-century Venice, this forum will present an analysis of Veronese's extraordinary feast paintings, as well as investigating why such a well respected artist as Veronese was brought before the tribunal, but more importantly his defense and clever solution.

Special Guests
At the Diocesan Convention last fall, Bishop Smith encouraged congregations to form partnerships in mission and ministry with organizations and congregations around them. Consequently, the congregations of St. Philip's In The Hills, Tucson, and Sts. Philip and James, Morenci, have entered into a "sister congregation" relationship for the year 2014-2015. This will include praying for each other's congregational mission and needs in the Prayers of the People, visitations to the partner congregation for services and special events, sharing of communications through electronic newsletters, and other opportunities that may be discerned as the relationship develops. On Sunday we will welcome the Rev. Allen Breckenridge, Vicar, and representatives of the congregation of Sts. Philip and James.

Art Gallery Opening Reception
The May show in the Murphey Gallery is entitled "Luminous Watercolors," featuring original works by local Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild artists Shannon Russell, Euayne Glinski and Loisanne Keller. An artists' reception will be held on Sunday, May 4, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Friends of Music Concert: Tucson Girls Chorus
Join Friends of Music as St. Philip's Day wraps up with our final concert of the season: the renowned Tucson Girls Chorus led by Marcela Molina. 2 p.m. in the Church. Recognized for their wonderful artistic programming and development of young musicians, Tucson Girls Chorus will share music by various composers, including works by contemporary Los Angeles-based composer Frank La Rocca. Admission by donation ($15 suggested).

Women's Wisdom Circle
You are invited to join wise women in conversation on the first and third Sunday of each month, at 12:30 p.m. in the Children's Chapel. We begin by exploring a wisdom saying and go where the Spirit leads. The intention of using quotes and images is to draw out our personal stories, wisdom, and insights in a safe space for sharing. The Rev. Brigid Waszczak serves as convener. Women's Wisdom Circle is free and open to women of all denominations or no denomination.  Bring a friend. Women from 30 to 80+ years young, join our circle of sisters for fun, fellowship, wit, and wisdom!

Legacy Society Members Honored

The Legacy Society consists of those who have chosen to support the continuing life of the Church through bequests.  This ministry, directed toward those who follow after us, is essential to the vibrant future ministry of the Church. On Sunday, April 27, members were recognized with a special prayer at all services. In addition, a gathering was held in the afternoon at the Rectory. The Rev. John Kitagawa said "I am so thankful for the dedicated people who believe in and love St. Philip's In The Hills Parish and want its ministry to flourish into the future."

Information about the gathering was listed on the incorrect date in the April 27 bulletin; we apologize for any inconvenience.

Choral Evensong May 18
St. Philip's is pleased to offer the final Choral Evensong service of the 2013-2014 program year on Sunday, May 18, at 4:00 p.m. This service provides the congregation time to reflect, transition from day into evening, and participate in a spiritual journey led by the choir. The service, which lasts about 45 minutes, will be followed by a 30-minute organ recital, featuring Canon Musician Erik W. Goldstrom from Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Phoenix. His recital is entitled "Out from the Cloister: Works by Leighton, Stanley, Harwood, and Elgar." This is Erik's second visit to our Evensong Organ Recital series.

ASMP Final Recital
The final recital for the 22 children in our After-School Music Program will be Tuesday, May 20, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Church. The children will perform on piano and chimes and sing as a choir. It will be an exciting day for us. The recital will be followed by a family dinner in the gallery for the children's families and friends, volunteers, and interested parishioners. You are most welcome to join us. Please RSVP to Barby Goldschmid or call 237-8881.
