Casa Maria Needs Your Help March 1
The Casa Maria Sandwich-Making Ministry really needs some extra helping hands to feed our neighbors in need. Last month we had only 19 people to make 850 lunches for Casa Maria Free Kitchen, a facility located in the Santa Rita neighborhood of South Tucson. Our next sandwich making is on Saturday, March 1, beginning at 7:15 a.m. Won't you join us? Bach Marathon St. Philip's Friends of Music presents the 23rd annual Bach Marathon, "Monumental Works of J. S. Bach," on Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2. On Saturday morning, March 1, beginning at 10 a.m., Jeffrey Campbell will bring to life the Art of Fugue, Bach's final, unfinished masterpiece. He will be joined by the Arizona Brass Quintet and Jeffri Sanders on harpsichord. At 11:45 a.m., enjoy a "Bach's lunch." Join fellow marathoners for a sandwich, drink, and conversation. Reservations can be made by calling 299-6421, ext. 32, or you may order your lunch at the beginning of the 10 a.m. concert. On Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m., hear internationally renowned guest organist Renée Anne Louprette in a rare performance of the "Leipzig" Chorale Preludes. Also known as the "Great 18 Chorale Preludes," BWV 651-668, these exquisite late works of the Leipzig master will be performed in their entirety on St. Philip's wonderful Holtkamp organ. Ms. Louprette recently completed her recording of the collection. She resides in New York City, and holds the position Organist and Director of Music L'Église de Notre Dame in New York City. Co-sponsored by the Southern Arizona Chapter, American Guild of Organists. Reception follows. Admission to Saturday's event is by donation to St. Philip's Friends of Music (suggested donation $15 for each session, $25 for both). On Sunday March 2, First Sunday Music at both the 9 and 11:15 a.m. worship services will be the monumental motet Jesu, meine Freude, presented in the context of the liturgy by the Canterbury Choir and Canterbury Apprentices, with organ voluntaries played by guest organist Renée Anne Louprette. In conjunction with First Sunday Music, the First Sunday "Food for Hunger" Food Drive takes place all morning in the Fishpond Garden. Food offerings are used to replenish our Food Pantry to help our neighbors in need. Also, please bring any new/used paperback books, on any subject. St. Philip's Prison Ministry will take them to Reading Between the Bars of Tucson, who will send them to prisoners in Arizona. Also, "Just Coffee" is offered for sale on the first Sunday of each month ($10/lb, beans or ground). This fair-trade coffee supports a cooperative of coffee growers in Mexico. United Thank Offering In-Gathering The United Thank Offering (UTO) is a program of the Church which was started by the women of the Church in 1883 and is rooted in the concept of daily prayer and thankfulness. It provides a way for men, women and families to express their thankfulness for God's blessings in a tangible way. Blue boxes are available for a daily offering of gratitude throughout the year and envelopes are provided for Ingathering Sunday, March 2. These UTO offerings go to support the mission of the Church throughout the world and to meet compelling human needs. This offering is a great way for individuals and families to reflect on their thankfulness and support people in need around the world. It provides a direct link between our parish church and the worldwide Anglican Communion. Art Gallery Opening Reception The March show in the Murphey Gallery at St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church is entitled "Art Inspirations," featuring a collection of photographs and the art they inspired. The show runs from Sunday, March 2, through Tuesday, April 1. An artists' reception will be held on Sunday, March 2, from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. Showcasing St. Philip's In The Hills as well as the city of Tucson, the art show features photographs by Donald Knight, which were chosen as inspiration for original paintings by six artists: Pam Cheeseman, Jennifer Clark, Deanna Thibault, Judy Constantine, Scarlett Taylor, and Barbara Amyx. Each artist is showing one painting of one of Knight's photos of St. Philip's; other subjects include Mission San Xavier, local flora and fauna, the Desert Museum, Tohono Chul Park, Reid Park Zoo, and other Tucson landmarks. Planning Meeting for Poz Cafe St. Philip's is once again co-hosting the Poz Cafe, a monthly luncheon for people living with HIV/AIDS sponsored by Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network. We are seeking volunteers for the March 20 luncheon, at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church at River and Swan. We are also seeking donations of money and personal items, such as paper towels, toilet tissue, bar soap, shampoo, and other items found on the TIHAN web site (www.tihan.org, click on "donate" and scroll down to "Poz Cafe Wish List"). For further details or to volunteer contact the Rev. Ralph Taylor. There will be a planning meeting on March 2 at 12:30 p.m. in Room 10. All are invited.

Elizabeth Spilotro, an estate planning attorney with Karp & Weiss, will be the presenter. Workbook provided. One of the greatest burdens to a family is the economic chaos created by someone's death. Lent Notes and Schedule |
Shrove Tuesday Supper The J2A Youth Group will host a special Shrove Tuesday Gumbo/Jambalaya supper on Tuesday, March 4, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Murphey Gallery, followed by Night Prayer and burning of palms. All are invited to attend this fun and delicious supper before the season of Lent begins. Ash Wednesday Services
On Ash Wednesday, March 5, St. Philip's offers four services. Holy Eucharist Rite I and Imposition of Ashes will be at 7:30 a.m. and Holy Eucharist Rite II with Imposition of Ashes will be at noon. At 5:30 p.m. there will be an All-Generations Ash Wednesday service (no Eucharist), and at 7 p.m. the St. Philip's Singers will lead a Sung Eucharist Rite II with Imposition of Ashes. Also note that the "Ash Mob" will be offering "Ashes to Go," a new approach to a centuries-old Christian tradition, at various locations around Tucson. Be sure to watch the evening news to see if this evangelistic effort got press coverage! 11:15 Sunday Services During Lent At the 11:15 a.m. Sunday worship services during Lent, beginning on Lent II, our liturgy will be inspired by the ancient Sarum Rite of Anglican tradition. The Sarum Rite was the liturgical form used in most of the English Church prior to the introduction of the first Book of Common Prayer in 1549. In keeping with the time period of the liturgical language, the Scripture readings will be taken from the King James Bible. Incense will be used at these services. These special services will draw from ancient prayer forms that will invite our prayer and reflection through this sacred season. Lenten Recitals Begin Next Week
St. Philip's Friends of Music presents noontime recitals during Lent on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. beginning March 6. An array of talented local instrumentalists and vocalists will provide thirty minutes of music -- an entertaining and relaxing way to spend your lunch hour. On Thursday, March 6, Lawrence Alexander, critically acclaimed baritone, will share his warm and rich voice with the audience in two song collections by early 20th century English composer George Butterworth, "A Shropshire Lad" and "Bredon Hill." With pianist Bonnie Bird. Next week: March 13, one of Tucson's youngest award-winning talents, 14-year-old Cameron Williams, will dazzle the audience with his technical proficiency and musical mastery. Cameron was featured on NPR's " From the Top." Please see the complete recital schedule below. Wednesday Service, Classes, Supper Begin March 12

Whether your thirst this Lent is to find true peace in Christ or to move more deeply into "the world," join us for a time apart in which we can listen together to God's Word: in prayer, in Scripture, in our lives. Our retreat, on Friday, March 21 (6-9 p.m.), and Saturday, March 22 (9 a.m.-3 p.m.), will interweave shared prayer, presentation from our retreat leaders, Wes Howard-Brook and Sue Ferguson Johnson, individual silence and small group sharing, sewn together with stories from the Gospel of John which have been used by the church during Lent since the early centuries of Christianity. Wherever you may be on your journey with God, we invite you to "Come and see!" $45 retreat fee includes materials and meals ($20 Friday evening only, $30 Saturday only).
