Annual Meeting Notice
|
The 2014 Annual Meeting of St. Philip's In The Hills Parish will be held on two Sundays: 19 and 26 January 2014. On both Sundays we will observe the usual service schedule. The Rector's Report will be given as the sermon on January 19, and the Senior Warden will offer the sermon on January 26. On January 19, the Annual Meeting Part I, at 10:15 a.m., will include reports on mission and ministries, with opportunities for discussion and conversation. On January 26, the Annual Meeting Part II, at 10:15 a.m., will focus on the fiduciary aspects of the parish, with opportunities for Q&A. Elections of three Vestry members for 3-year terms, the Junior Warden for a 1-year term, and five lay delegates to the Annual Diocesan Convention will take place at Part II of the Annual Meeting (January 26) only. Nominations from the floor will be accepted at Part I of the Annual Meeting (January 19). In order to be nominated, the nominee must be a Pledger of Record for 12 consecutive months, communicant in good standing (attends worship and communion at least 3 times a year), and an active participant in ministries of the parish; must have previously agreed to serve, if elected; and must bring 150 copies of a one-sheet biography with picture. There will be no nominations from the floor during Part II of the Annual Meeting (January 26). The Constitution & Canons of the Episcopal Church provide that decisions are made by vote of the Vestry, who represent the parishioners who elect them. Therefore it is important to be informed about your representatives and to attend the annual meeting and vote.
WHO MAY VOTE To vote, one must be a member in good standing of St. Philip's In The Hills Parish according to the following definitions from our Bylaws and the Canons:
Qualified members shall be all of the communicant members of the congregation as shown by the Church Register who are over 16 years of age, and all other members of the congregation over 16 years of age who have been regular contributors for the past six months, as shown by the treasurer's books.
Communicant members shall be those meeting the qualifications of the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona. (From Bylaws, Article I, Section I.)
All communicants of this Church who for the previous year have been faithful in corporate worship, unless for good cause prevented, and have been faithful in working, praying, and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God, are to be considered communicants in good standing. (From Title I, Canon 17, and Sec. 3 of The Canons of the Episcopal Church.)

Bio of Nominee for Junior Warden
I am very pleased and honored to be nominated again for the position of Junior Warden, "People's Warden." I have been a member of St. Philip's since May of 2008, finding our church to be a welcome and loving home for me. I was raised in Texas and attended church for much of my youth and early adult life in the Methodist tradition. Only in my middle adult life did I connect with God and reconcile my own religious spirituality. I grew up in the Dallas area, attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning a Bachelor's degree in Advertising. I have working in the advertising industry and media sales all of my adult life, employed in sales management roles at multiple newspapers before moving to Tucson in early 2008. I currently am publisher at Tucson Lifestyle magazine and also sell residential real estate for Long Realty. I have volunteered my time at St. Philip's, initially as an usher and then a member of the Vestry, and served as Junior Warden last year. I have served on various committees, including chair of the search committee to call the Rev. Vicki Hesse. I look forward to continuing to contribute to our church family and the growth of St. Philip's. --Doug Burke
Bios of Nominees for Vestry
A lifelong Episcopalian born to a military family, I am a 10-year military veteran myself. I received my BS in Accounting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and MBA in Management from Golden Gate University. I had a deeply satisfying career in healthcare finance and clinical practice management, moving my family to Tucson in 1993. When Kino Hospital was sold, I moved to Pima County Justice Court, then retired early to care for my terminally ill husband. I have two grown children, and two granddaughters. I have volunteered in the church finance office, on St. Matthews Guild, and am currently the Altar Guild Treasurer. While on Vestry, I look forward to contributing my management expertise and knowledge of financial systems for the benefit of the church. In return, I hope to gain a greater understanding of church governance and develop deeper relationships on my journey. --Judie Ellyson
I was born and raised in Upland, CA. I attended UC Davis, where I earned my bachelor's degree in Biology and my elementary teaching credential. Shortly after graduation, my husband, Scott, and I moved to Philadelphia so that he could attend medical school. There I became a medical writer and worked for a major pharmaceutical company. We moved to Tucson in 2005 when Scott was placed at UMC for his residency in emergency medicine; he is now an attending physician in the ER at UMC. I worked in publishing for a local non-profit before becoming a full-time stay-at-home mom in 2006. We began attending St. Philip's in 2005 and I was confirmed in 2006. Both of our children (Kate, age 7 and Ethan, age 4) were baptized at St. Philip's. I have served as a leader of the 20s/30s/40s group, as a lay reader, and as a member of various committees. I was the co-chair of the planning committee for this year's Advent Festival of Lights service. Additionally, for the last 6 months I have served as a replacement Vestry member to fill a vacated spot. My brief experience on the Vestry has given me a kind of "preview" of how the Vestry operates. This has allowed me to commit to my own full Vestry term with knowledge of what being on the Vestry involves. I look forward to contributing my time and talent to the Vestry, especially in the areas of education and children's ministries. --Jenneen Lowry
I first came to St. Philip's during church-shopping season of 2006 with my husband, Larry Alexander, and our children, Thomas and Abby, then 7 and 5. Although Larry and I were raised in different faith traditions (he Lutheran, I Roman Catholic), we were received into the Episcopal Church at St. Andrew's Church in Yardley, PA, where we were active in its social justice ministries, music and children's programs. We sought a similar church in Tucson -- an inclusive, welcoming community committed to social justice, with a thriving children's program and an appreciation of good music (particularly important to us as professional musicians) -- and we found it at St. Philip's. Over the last seven years, we have all grown and flourished, musically and spiritually, at St. Philip's. Larry and I are both staff singers, and I have been active in Friends of Music, the Parish Retreat Committee, as children's choir supper coordinator, and as a J2A and Rite 13 parent. Thomas, now 15, is an RSCM officer and Canterbury Apprentice; Abby, almost 13, is an acolyte and St. Nicholas chorister; both are also members of Schola Cantorum and Chalice Players. St. Philip's is not just our spiritual home -- sometimes it feels like we really do live here! As one who is continually welcomed, encouraged, and empowered by the St. Philip's community, I am honored to be nominated to the Vestry, and will do my utmost to support St. Philip's mission to do God's work in the world. --Mary Paul
Nominees for Convention Delegates
Linda Dewey, Raymond Dewey, Debbie Johnson, Jim Prescott-Smith, and Jane Prescott-Smith have been nominated to serve as delegates to Diocesan Convention 2014 in October.

What Else Is Going On |
Prison Ministry Meeting On Tuesday, January 14 at 4:30 p.m. in La Paz, the Prison Ministry will have its next regular meeting. Joining us will be Rev. Bob Holliday from St. James UMC who will share his experience and advice on Kairos and other prison ministry. We hope you can join us. Operation Streamline
St. Philippians are invited to join members of the Border and Immigration Ministry to witness Operation Streamline, the "fast track" legal process created for the purpose of deporting undocumented migrants. Witness the harsh reality for hundreds of thousands of our brothers and sisters who are deported as a result of this cruel and inhumane process. We will attend together on Wednesday, January 15. Bring an official photo ID; you will go through a metal detector and a security check. You may join us in a carpool departing from under the solar array at 12:30 p.m. For details, contact Suzanne. On Wednesday, January 15, at 6:30 p.m., you are invited to experience St. Philip's meditation labyrinth by the light of the full moon. Refreshments and fellowship follow. Come enjoy this meditative, fun, and inspiring experience! Also, Can't find your brick? Check out the new Labyrinth Directory in the church office. Winter Residents Gathering Every year our winter resident members (may we call you Snowbirds?) gather at Saucy Cutlip's for an afternoon of chit chat and getting to know other birds of a feather. All Snowbirds, both current and ex, are cordially invited. So are year-round parishioners; we all love it when you join us. Mark your calendars now for Sunday, January 19, 3 to 5 p.m. Please call Saucy at 572-6611 to RSVP and receive directions to her house. Our guests always make this such a fun gathering so don't miss out! Choral Evensong
St. Philip's is pleased to offer Choral Evensong on Sunday, January 19, at 4:00 p.m. Our Evensong is based on the service that has been sung from the Book of Common Prayer from the 16th Century. The Schola Cantorum provides music for this service. The service, which lasts about 45 minutes, will be followed by a 30-minute organ recital, featuring Tucson organist Chris Fresolone. Chris has recently completed his doctoral studies in organ performance with a minor in choral conducting from the University from Arizona and is organist at Casas Adobes UCC Church in Tucson. He is also the Assistant Director of the Tucson Girls Chorus. Read more about upcoming Friends of Music events. CPR and First Aid CoursesThe CPR and first aid training last spring was successful and everyone who participated said that the courses were very worthwhile. The training is being offered because our ushers need it. However, St. Philip's parishioners and friends may also take advantage of these new courses. Most of our emergencies, although relatively rare, involve an elderly person who falls, faints, has a stroke or heart attack. We have an automated external defibrillator (AED) in the back of the church for people with cardiac arrest, but it seems that still too few people know how to use it. Courses are offered on Tuesday, January 21, and Saturday, January 25, with CPR-AED (cardiopulmonary resuscitation-defibrillator) training in the morning and first aid training in the afternoon (brown bag lunch in between). The fees are $20 for CPR-AED training, $25 for first aid training, and $38 for both together (based on a class size of 20 people - compare this to the Red Cross's usual fee of $80). We recommend that you take both courses on the same day. However, you may take one course without taking the other. For more information and to register, please contact Bob Kamilli or call 749-0302. Read about the courses in our "Good News" electronic publication. Wine Study and Bible Tasting
Well Red or Well Read? Why not become both? Join us for Wine Study and Bible Tasting January 26 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the home of hosts Bev and Warren Edminster. Meet our "in house" wine expert (sommelier) and scripture scholar who will educate our taste buds and expand our Biblical knowledge. Open to all 21 years and older. Participants, please bring a bottle of wine to share (or non-alcoholic beverage). Tasting wines and nibbles will be provided. Be quick! Space is limited. RSVP or call 520-885-4266. Directions will be provided with your confirmation. Bordado por la Paz en San Felipe
Join us for a "taller" (workshop) on Sunday, January 26, 1-3 p.m., at the Labyrinth Fountain at St. Philip's, to celebrate one year of action for Fuentes Rojas/ Bordado por la Paz! On January 20, 2013, this enterprise began at St. Philip's and has grown to about 20 people in Tucson from various faith communities who stitch in fellowship or in solitude to complete memorial handkerchiefs in remembrance of lives lost in US/Mexico Drug War violence. On Sunday, January 26, you are invited to embroider with us. We'll stitch, in red thread on a man's white handkerchief, known details of the victim's death based on police records. Instruction will be available; a supply list of inexpensive and easily available materials will be provided in advance. Refreshments will be served along with great fellowship and conversation. Indoor space will be reserved in case of bad weather. For more information, to RSVP and to receive your supply list, contact Suzanne or call 325-4469.

Film Screening: Herman's House
On February 2 at 12:30 p.m., St. Philip's Prison Ministry will host a showing of the documentary Herman's House. We will gather in the La Paz meeting room. A light lunch will be offered. Reservations are not required, but would be much appreciated to help with the lunch count. Please contact Don or Eileen Veitch or call 978-618-5048. "Herman Wallace spent more than 40 years in a 6-by-9-foot cell in solitary confinement. Louisiana. Imprisoned in 1967 for a robbery he admits, he was subsequently sentenced to life for a killing he vehemently denies. Herman's House is a moving account of the remarkable expression his struggle found in an unusual project proposed by artist Jackie Sumell. Imagining Wallace's "dream home" began as a game and became an interrogation of justice and punishment in America. The film takes us inside the duo's unlikely 12-year friendship, revealing the transformative power of art." (www.pbs.org) Renewal of Vows Service
St. Philip's will hold a service to reaffirm marriage vows and same-gender commitment promises on Saturday, February 15. If you are interested in participating, please call the church office to sign up. If you are interested in helping plan a reception afterwards, please contact Carmen Christy. J2A Rummage Sale The J2A Youth Group will be holding a rummage sale on Saturday, March 8, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. to raise money for their Pilgrimage. We would greatly appreciate your gently used rummage sale donations. You can drop off items in the Palo Verde Room in La Parroquia on Sundays between 8 and 11 a.m. (Due to limited storage, please call if you have large furniture.) Contact Hope Goldsmith or call 661-1076 with any questions. Thank you!
"Spirituality of Islam" Workshop Tacheria is presenting an interfaith workshop at St. Philip's (West Gallery) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, featuring Jamal Raman on "The Spirituality of Islam." Jamal has presented at St. Philip's before in previous Tacheria workshops and is inspiring and absolutely delightful. Jamal's passion lies in interfaith community building. He remains rooted in his Islamic tradition and cultivates a "spaciousness" by being open to the beauty and wisdom of other faiths. By authentically and appreciatively un-derstanding other paths, Jamal feels that he becomes a better Muslim. This spaciousness is not about conversion but about completion. The event is open to the public and the cost is $35 per person, payable at the door, with attendees requested to bring their own lunch. For more information.

Ministry Opportunities |
ASMP Notes St. Philip's After-School Music Program was happy to welcome the children and volunteers back on Monday. As we go into the New Year we have a few openings. If you love children and enjoy staying young and knowing what is going on in the world of 3rd through 5th graders please come join our family. For homework volunteers we like to have teams of 5 to 6 for each day so if someone is out of town or has a conflict it is not a big problem. Shifts are approximately 2 hours (3-5 p.m.) one afternoon a week, Monday through Thursdays. Thursdays have 2 shifts because of early dismissal (early shift 1-3 p.m.). We especially need help on Wednesdays or late shift on Thursdays. We would of course welcome anyone on any day to join our team. Kay Couch always welcomes new piano volunteers too. If you can help teach or supervise practice please contact Kay or me and we will certainly be pleased to answer any questions and sign you up. If anyone has a hand-held vacuum they don't need or a sturdy bookshelf with several shelves that can hold games and puzzles that would be a great help. Please let me know. Remember you can always donate to the ASMP or sponsor a child if you like. Come visit us anytime. You will find us in rooms 7 and 8 in the Children's Center from 3 to 5 each day and in the choir room from 5 to 6. Please don't hesitate to call for more information: Barby Goldschmid, 237-8881. Help Wanted: Little Shop
The Little Shop needs you. We are looking for a volunteer to work either 8 to 10:15 a.m. or 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sundays. Greening of the Church The Tucson Flute Club lent a festive air to the Greening of the Church on December 22 after the 11:15 service. While the busy elves worked to decorate the church under the direction of the Higby family, soups, chili, and "fixins" were served by the Parish Life Ministry in the East Gallery, and J2A wrapped presents for parishioners. Around 85 people attended this joyous event. A big thanks to all who participated!
Colorful Team of St. Philippians Takes to the Track On a forty-degree partly sunny day with scudding clouds, the cold wind howled across the Pima County fairgrounds, knifing into the stalwart St. Philippians huddled awaiting the starter's signal. Three hours later, once the fog of powdered paint had cleared, their besmudged faces wore ear-to-ear grins. Billed as "the happiest 5K on the planet," the Color Run had lived up to its reputation.
