Special Early Advent Events
|
Advent Festival of Lights Tuesday The Advent Festival of Lights service, entitled "Maiden, Matron, Matriarch," will be held on Tuesday, December 3, at 6:30 p.m. This annual candlelit service seeks to illuminate the feminine face of God, with a focus this year on the power of female generations. The service will feature readings, prayers, instrumental music, and congregational singing. Prior to the service, beginning at 5:30 p.m., a "light"-fare potluck dinner will take place in the Murphey Gallery. A freewill offering will benefit Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse. Emerge! provides domestic abuse crisis intervention and housing, prevention and education, and support and advocacy services to women and children. All are welcome to attend -- men too!
Advent Quiet Day On Saturday, December 7, from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m., join the Rev. Allen Breckenridge for a quiet day of prayer and exploration to enrich your Advent journey. Reflect on your life of prayer, discover new ways to encounter God, and have time to practice several forms of prayer, all within a welcoming community. After 35 years in active ministry, Allen is a prayer seeker who is both struggling and, with some success, exploring different ways of prayer. He is continuing to expand his own devotion to God and especially enjoys assisting others in deepening their journey with God. $20.00 retreat fee includes materials and lunch. Scholarship assistance is available. Contact the Rev. Greg Foraker to register.
Parishioners Share Meditations The Advent season at St. Philip's brings with it the wonderful opportunity for all of us to reflect upon, prepare ourselves for, and anticipate the celebration of Christmas joy. As a very special gift, members and friends of our parish community share their spiritual reflections in St. Philip's Advent Meditations Booklet, now in its sixth year of publication. This year the meditations focus on the meaning of pilgrimage. We invite you to join us in moving slowly through these meditations, day by day, reflecting in your own way on this season of waiting, expectation, and hope. You may pick up your Advent Meditations Booklet in the office, or click here.

Special Epiphany Event
|
Amahl and the Night VisitorsFriends of Music will present Gian Carlo Menotti's one-act opera Amahl and the Night Visitors on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Church. Audiences of all ages will be moved and delighted by the simplicity, humor, and charm of this perennial favorite, which tells the story of a miracle of faith from a child's perspective. Amahl, a crippled shepherd boy, is visited by three kings on their way to pay homage to the newborn King of Kings. He offers his only possession, his homemade crutch, for the kings to add to their splendid gifts to the Child, and is restored to strength and wholeness. Adult human weaknesses and redemption are also explored. Although this opera is often presented at Christmas time, it is especially apropriate for the Epiphany season. This production will involve staging, full costumes, a singing and dancing cast of about 25 persons, as well as an orchestra of about 20 local professionals. Do not miss Friends of Music's presentation of this inspiring and delightful show for the entire family! The opera is offered in part as an outreach ministry to provide cultural enrichment to low-income children and their families. Students at Holloway and Rio Vista Elementary Schools and Imago Dei Middle School, their families, and their teachers will be invited to attend the final dress rehearsal free of charge to experience not only the musical artistry but also the hard work of creating a stage production. In the spirit of the season and theme of the opera, as well as to encourage accessibility to more of the Tucson community, admission to the concert will be by freewill donations. A donation of $20 at the door is suggested for those able to help defray performance costs. This production represents a unique opportunity for St. Philippians to work together. The title role will be performed by a member of the St. Nicholas Choir; the remaining principal roles will be sung by professionals who are also members of the church. The choreographers, dancers, producers, musical directors, stage director, and production crew are all parishioners. Many have professional backgrounds in theater and stage productions. Chorus roles will be filled by adult and St. Nicholas Choir members. A production of this scale, involving this many members of the St. Philip's community, has the potential to unify parishioners in a singular way. Amahl is the most ambitious Friends of Music project ever. As for almost any premier production, door admissions will cover only a fraction of the total production expense. The cast and production staff for Amahl involves about 25 people. The orchestra will have about 20 instrumentalists. Sets and a stage will need to be constructed or rented. Royalties and licensing of the music is a significant expense, as will be increased media coverage. The scale of this production requires the energy, enthusiasm, and backing of many like-minded individuals and groups within St. Philip's. Your financial support for the largest-scale event that Friends of Music has ever offered will be greatly appreciated at any level of contribution. Receipts indicating donation amounts will be provided, and sponsors will be recognized in the concert program. Assistance is truly needed at all levels of affordability. For more information about donation levels and other ways you can help, click here. You will find both a detailed information sheet and a donation form. Or you may call 222-7277 for information.

Collection for this years Children's Christmas Project begins this Sunday and will continue each Sunday until Christmas. This project provides a Christmas gift of money to the children of the three schools with which St. Philip's has a special relationship, Imago Dei, Rio Vista, and Holaway. The money is used by the schools as an emergency fund, for eye glasses, clothes, family emergencies and special student incentives. Last year, through this Christmas collection, St. Philip's was able to give a gift of $2300 to each of the schools. In his thank you letter to the church the principal of Holaway wrote: "In very difficult times it is the most courageous and most honorable that come to the aid of others. Your parish clearly meets this honorable charge. I am not sure you realize the benefits a gift such as this can provide for a school and its students. The donation helps support students in all aspects of their education." The challenge to us at St. Philip's is to once again respond to this need through our Christmas giving. Tables for collection will be in the Perry and Fish Pond Gardens every Sunday. Checks should be made out to St. Philip's with Children's Christmas Project in the memo line. They may also be mailed to the church. Read more about the project. El Tiradito Shrine Community Vigil St. Philip's Border and Immigration Ministry invites you to an evening of remembrance with Tucson's immigration reform community on Thursday, December 12. We'll pray for our brothers and sisters who perished or were lost in the desert while seeking a new life free of hunger and deprivation and learn about recent developments in US immigration and border policies and ways that we can participate in constructive change. The vigil is a brief and beautiful immersion into song, fellowship, prayer, and reflection. The vigil is held outdoors at El Tiradito Shrine. It is sponsored by Derechos Humanos and is held every Thursday at 7 p.m. On Thursday, December 12, you are invited to meet members of the Border and Immigration Ministry at El Minuto Restaurant, Main and Cushing St., at 6 p.m. for dinner. After dinner we'll walk across the parking lot to El Tiradito Shrine for the vigil at 7. Please RSVP for dinner by Wednesday, December 11, so we can reserve a table for St. Philip's. To carpool from St. Philip's, leaving at 5:30 p.m., contact Suzanne, BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org.
