On Everyone's Mind

On the morning of November 8, 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the central Philippines, causing widespread damage and knocking out power and communications lines. Episcopal Relief & Development's local partner, the Episcopal Church in the Philippines, is assessing needs and determining how best to respond.
As our Bishop said in an announcement, "By now we have all seen the pictures of the terrible devastation in the Philippines. The United States has close ties with that country, as does our own Episcopal Church. Two of our clergy, the Rev. Romeo Rabusa and the Rev. Jonathan Sy have family and friends who have been affected by the damage there.
The best way for us to help is to work through Episcopal Relief and Development. You can send funds directly to them, and you can also designate gifts on their web site. ERD has a great reputation for work like this, has people on the ground, and will get your money to where it can do the most good quickly."
Please remember the people of the Philippines in your prayers. You may want to use this prayer composed by the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, our Presiding Bishop:
O God our help in time of trouble, we pray for the Filipino people who have suffered this grievous natural disaster. We pray that survivors may find water, food, and shelter, and news of their missing loved ones. There is trauma and destruction in many places, and little news from some of the areas hardest hit. Give peace and confidence, O Lord, to those in the midst of the whirlwind. Open hearts and hands around the world to respond sacrificially to the urgent need. Help us to remember that we are connected, one to another, the living to the dead, the comfortable to the suffering, the peaceful to the worried and anxious. Motivate us to change our hearts, for our misuse and pollution of the earth you have given us to share has something to do with this disaster. Show us your suffering Son in the midst of this Calvary, that we might love one another as he has loved us. In your holy name we pray. Amen.
Thank you for supporting this relief work both materially and spiritually.

Sunday, November 17
|
Stewardship In-GatheringSunday, November 17, is In-Gathering Sunday. Parishioners who have yet to turn in their pledge card for 2014 will have an opportunity to do so during all the services that day. Pledge cards are available in the office and on St. Philip's web site. For the many of you who have already sent in your pledge card, you will be invited to fill out a Gratitude Statement card. These cards will be brought forward, along with pledge envelopes and weekly offerings, during the Offertory. This collective in-gathering event is a community expression of faith, commitment to St. Philip's, and support of all of God's work that happens under the St. Philip's banner. Portico Dedication About 1980, when the East Murphey Gallery was constructed, the plans included a shelter on the east side to cut the solar load (economy), and denote a formal entry (aesthetics) to the Gallery. Funds, unfortunately, were not available at that time and this segment of the project had to be eliminated. All these years, we have had this stark white wall with just the three pairs of doors staring at us. Two of our Parish families, the Bremond and Volz families, stepped forward and offered to fund the construction of a Portico that completes this area of the campus. Now that it is complete, including the planters and benches, a Dedication of the Portico will take place following the 11:15 service on Sunday, November 17. All are invited to attend. RSCM Medals
Friends of Music provides scholarships to our St. Nicholas Choristers to attend summer courses offered by the Royal School of Church Music each year. Sunday at the 9 a.m. service, we will recognize the achievements of several of our senior choristers, who were successful in passing the tests for Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. They worked hard to prepare for these exams, which are administered at their respective summer courses. Bronze: Karine Story; Silver: Chloe Harwood, Thomas Alexander; Gold: Sarah Spurlin. Congratulations to all! Read more about what is involved in the summer courses and the work required to achieve a medal. Choral Evensong
We are pleased to offer Choral Evensong on Sunday, November 17, at 4:00 p.m. Choral Evensong is rooted in one of the daily monastic services that date from the medieval period, and our Evensong is based on the service that has been sung from the Book of Common Prayer from the 16th Century. This service provides the congregation time to reflect, transition from day into evening, and participate in a spiritual journey led by the Schola Cantorum. The service, which lasts about 45 minutes, will be followed by a 30-minute organ recital, featuring Arizona State University DMA student Emma Whitten. Her recital, entitled "Back to Bach," will feature music based on the theme of the notes B-A-C-H. Art Gallery Opening Reception
The November show in the Murphey Gallery features members of the Southwestern League of Fine Arts, presenting a tribute to Donald Stanley Weber. An artists' reception on Sunday, November 17, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., features works by Donald Weber, exhibited in his memory, as well as works in various media by SLFA members. Full Moon Labyrinth Walk
On Sunday, November 17, you are invited to walk St. Philip's meditation labyrinth when the moon is full. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a brief introduction to labyrinths and a presentation on how to get the most out of your walk, followed by walking the labyrinth. Gather in the church plaza, where the labyrinth is located. Afterwards, participants remain for fellowship and refreshments. In case of rain, the labyrinth walks are cancelled.

Tartans and Instructed Music on November 24
The "Kirking o' the Tartans" will be celebrated on Sunday, November 24, at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. The Tucson Highlanders, a pipe band dedicated to the music of the great Highland bagpipes and Scottish-style drumming, will head the procession to and from the church on that day. Scottish and nae-Scottish parishioners and visitors are encouraged to wear their tartans to this service. You will be invited forward at the conclusion of the service to have your tartans blessed. St. Philip's uses this occasion to celebrate the Scottish heritage of the Episcopal Church by using a Eucharistic Prayer from the Scottish Prayer Book. The 9 and 11:15 a.m. services on November 24 will also be instructed music services, an opportunity to learn more about the music used in church services and how it is integral to worship. Verbal and printed explanations will be offered throughout the service, in place of a sermon. Thanksgiving Gobble, gobble, gobble!!!!!! Join your St. Philip's family and friends for our annual Thanksgiving dinner in the Murphey Gallery following the 11 a.m. Thanksgiving Eucharist, on Thursday, November 28. We are pleased to announce that parishioner Patricia Harris will provide lovely harp music while we dine. Parish life will provide turkeys. Please bring one of the following dishes for 8-10 guests, based on your last name. A-B, breads; C-H, vegetables/salads; I-M, potatoes/stuffing; N-T, desserts; U-Z, sauces including cranberry. And, mindful of those less fortunate, please also bring a nonperishable food item for the St. Philip's Food Pantry. We will be serving "two buck Chuck," so if you are a wine aficionado you may wish to bring a preferred bottle to share. You can let us know what you plan to bring and how many in your party by e-mailing Joe, signing up at the hospitality table in the Perry Garden during Coffee Hour, or phoning the church at 299-6421. Bring your friends and come share delicious food and good company!
Advent Festival of LightsThe Advent Festival of Lights service, entitled "Maiden, Matron, Matriarch," will be held on Tuesday, December 3, at 6:30 p.m. This annual candlelit service seeks to illuminate the feminine face of God, with a focus this year on the power of female generations. The service will feature readings, prayers, instrumental music, and congregational singing. Prior to the service, beginning at 5:30 p.m., a light-fare potluck dinner will take place in the Murphey Gallery. A freewill offering will benefit Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse. All are welcome to attend -- men too! Parishioners Share Meditations
The Advent season at St. Philip's brings with it the wonderful opportunity for all of us to reflect upon, prepare ourselves for, and anticipate the celebration of Christmas joy. As a very special gift, members and friends of our parish community share their spiritual reflections in St. Philip's Advent Meditations Booklet, now in its sixth year of publication. This year the meditations focus on the meaning of pilgrimage. We invite you to join us in moving slowly through these meditations, day by day, reflecting in your own way on this season of waiting, expectation, and hope. You may pick up your Advent Meditations Booklet beginning on Sunday, December 1. And as usual, meditations will be posted online beginning December 1. Advent Quiet Day
On Saturday, December 7, from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m., join the Rev. Allen Breckenridge for a quiet day of prayer and exploration to enrich your Advent journey. Reflect on your life of prayer, discover new ways to encounter God, and have time to practice several forms of prayer, all within a welcoming community. After 35 years in active ministry, Allen is a prayer seeker who is both struggling and, with some success, exploring different ways of prayer. He is continuing to expand his own devotion to God and especially enjoys assisting others in deepening their journey with God. $20.00 retreat fee includes materials and lunch. Scholarship assistance is available. Contact the Rev. Greg Foraker to register. Good News
This week you should be receiving the print "digest" version of Good News from St. Philip's. This issue contains a schedule of services and events, Advent to Epiphany. Also enclosed is a Christmas Memorial Offering envelope for you to use to make an offering in memory of loved ones to be printed in the Christmas Eve bulletins. Please return it no later than Monday, December 9: mail it, drop it in an offering plate, or leave it at the church office (in Steve Brong's box). Christmas 2013 memorials go into a special restricted account to help pay for the special 2014 Easter decorations and for our wondrous Easter 2014 music. Easter memorial offerings from this past spring are being used to help provide the special Christmas decorations and music this season. Also in the Electronic Good News

Stewardship Witness
During Stewardship season, many of us, including myself, tend to think first in terms of financial support--but how many of us stop to think what that check or electronic transfer can mean for the many ministries offered at St. Philip's? As an example, those of us in the Mental Illness Ministry are grateful beyond words to the staff who have gone above and beyond the call so many times--whether it be for scheduling a forum on an already crowded Sunday schedule, accommodating the Candlelight Prayer Vigil two years in a row during Mental Health Awareness Week, finding space for several support groups and a monthly book club--and all towards the goal of providing a safe, welcoming environment for folks who might otherwise have felt alone and disconnected. Multiply this by over 90--the number, at last count, of groups dedicated to "doing God's work in the world"--and imagine the ripple effect into the rest of our community. And of course, we depend as well on the commitment of our many volunteers--please think as well of how much a donation of your time can mean! --Cheryl Mason
Stewardship Update
As of Wednesday, November 13, we have received 256 pledges for a total of $647,424. We are most grateful for this tangible expression of your commitment to growing from interior journey to outward mission at St. Philip's.
