Dear Friends in Christ:

I strongly encourage every member of St. Philip's In The Hills to join Kathy and me in participating the All Parish Retreat, "From Interior Journey to Outward Mission," November 8-10. A parish-wide retreat such as this one has been a wish of mine for some time, as well as an important initiative of our parish Strategic Planning process. I have seen how participation in events such as this can be key to building a loving, close-knit parish family.

I'm excited that Susan Anderson-Smith and Bill Roberts, both charismatic and dynamic leaders and known to many of our parishioners, have agreed to be our facilitators. They have planned a variety of activities that will help us get to know ourselves and others in our community better, while deepening our spirituality and helping us to hear God's call in our life.

Please join me in being part of this important event in the life of our parish.

Faithfully,
John
The Rev. Canon John E. Kitagawa, D.Min.
Rector

Blessing of the Animals
On Sunday, October 27, at 9 a.m., bring your pet to be blessed! The service will be held in the plaza and celebrates the loving relationship shared by humans and their pets, with opportunities to give thanks for the blessings animals give to us. Readings and prayers focus on the wonders of our world and our responsibility as humans to be good stewards of God's creation. All types of animals are welcome at this service. Participants are asked to keep their pets appropriately restrained. (This service does not include communion. The usual Rite II Eucharist will take place in the Church, also at 9 a.m.)

Fuentes Rojas: Bordado por la Paz de San Felipe
embroidered handkerchief Fuentes Rojas (Red Fountains) originated in Mexico City in 2011 to raise visibility for the victims of the US-Mexico Drug War that has resulted in systemic violence in Mexico.  To make their voice public the members of Fuentes Rojas formed Bordado por la Paz (Embroidering for Peace) to create a memorial for every victim of drug war violence. The memorials display information about the victim's death in words hand-embroidered with red thread on a man's white handkerchief. The movement has spread around the world to Latin America, Europe, Asia and the US. Join us for a taller (workshop) on Sunday, October 27, 1-3 pm,  at the Labyrinth Fountain at St. Philips. Together we'll each embroider, in red thread on a white handkerchief, known details of the victim's death based on police records. Instruction will be provided. We'll discuss plans for future public embroidery events. You are invited into a movement of remembrance and solidarity with our neighbors who struggle each day to survive the US-Mexico Drug War in their communities. For more information and to receive a simple and inexpensive supply list, contact Suzanne, or call 325-4469. Read more about Fuentes Rojas here.

Daughters of the King logo Daughters of the King Quiet Day November 2

A quiet day will be held at St. Philip's on Saturday, November 2, open to all women of the church. The event is sponsored by Faith Chapter of Daughters of the King, and will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end after lunch. We will have a wonderful and thoughtful presentation on prayer, led by the Rev. Jean Rogers. There will be time for meditation and reflection before the Eucharist at 11:30. The Rev. Vicki Hesse will celebrate and preach. Lunch will follow the Eucharist. Pre-registration is required. The cost is $12. For more information, please contact Jean Windmiller at jmwindmiller@msn.com, or you may make your reservation at the front desk when the office is open.

Dia de los Muertos at St. Philip's
El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is an event celebrated in many Latin American countries, particularly in Mexico. The Day of the Dead is a time to remember and honor the deceased and is usually characterized by ofrendas, which are shrines or altars constructed to present offerings to the spirits. Since Dia de los Muertos is considered to be a celebration of eternal life rather than a sad event, ofrendas usually reflect whimsical portrayals of the dead as they were when they were living. St. Philip's invites you to remember your departed loved ones by contributing to an ofrenda, which will be set up in the Columbarium Garden at St. Philip's, beginning October 21 through November 3.  Photographs, meaningful objects, and memorabilia are all suitable offerings. Objects may be placed on the ofrenda any time the office is open (Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

ofrenda

The ofrenda will be used in conjunction with St. Philip's All Souls' Day memorial service. On Saturday, November 2, we will celebrate All Souls' Day with a special Memorial Eucharist at 7 p.m. Particular attention will be given to remembering those who have died within the past two years, but we will celebrate all of our loved ones enjoying eternal life in the nearer presence of God. We invite families to remember their loved ones by lighting one of the votive candles found outside the church door prior to the service and placing it on the altar. The service concludes with a candlelit procession into the Columbarium Garden for prayers around the ofrenda. Afterwards, the celebration of life continues with a festive reception hosted by the Parish Life Ministry.

Annual Used Book Sale

Heaven on earth for book lovers is right around the corner! St. Philip's will present its Annual Used Book Sale on Saturday and Sunday, November 2 and 3, from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Murphey Gallery. This once-a-year book extravaganza offers a huge variety of gently used books, including recent best sellers, mysteries, cookbooks, biographies, history, travel, self-help, and children's favorites.  Profits from the sale are used to purchase materials and supplies for the St. Philip's Renouf/Nelson Library. The Library Committee gratefully accepts donations of used books to sell at the Sale. Please bring your book donations directly to the Library.

Gabriel Faure
First Sunday Music November 3

On Sunday, November 3, Gabriel Fauré's Requiem will be presented as part of the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services in observance of All Saints' Day. One of the most popular works in the choral/orchestral repertoire, the Requiem will be led by the St. Philip's Singers, Canterbury Choir, and Canterbury Apprentices, joining forces with the St. Nicholas Choir and chamber orchestra. Fauré's Requiem concentrates on the idea of eternal rest, unlike other Requiem settings that emphasize the terrors of judgment. It is throughout, a work of "profound meditation ... unassailable faith, quiet confidence ... tender and peaceful expectation" (Nadia Boulanger).

Food for Thought

St. Philip's 2014 Stewardship Season kicked off Sunday, October 13. Over the next weeks, deacons and priests will shape their preaching in relationship to the theme of Stewardship. Last Sunday, lay members of the congregation offered their witnesses to the ways St. Philip's has been a community in which they have been inspired to grow with God and to go and do. Through this tapestry of diverse threads and stories, we hope you will gain a deep appreciation for the many ways we, as a community of gifted individuals, make such a positive difference in the lives of St. Philippians and in the greater Tucson area. Last week you should have received a letter and pledge card in the mail. We invite you to reflect on what St. Philip's means to you, and ask that you return your pledge card promptly. Thank you.

Stewardship Witness
There are three major reasons why we pledge to St. Philip's:

The first is that it is our spiritual home, providing us with the profound rewards of liturgy, friendship, support, and personal comfort that come with active membership in a vibrant Church community.

The second is that the Christian outreach coming from St. Philip's many ministries results so much of God's work being done both inside and outside our walls to support those in need, that we consider St. Philip's to be among our most important charitiable causes in our community; one that is highly worthy of our financial support, not just because of what it does for us, but for what it does for others in need. We want to feel a significant part of making that outreach happen.

The third is that we really consider our pledge to be the annual renewal and reaffirmation of our membership -- our annual dues, if you will. St. Philip's excels in so many ways that we feel privileged to be a part of enabling it and willingly reaffirm our participation and our gratitude by means of our annual pledge.

learning materials Learning Is Fun in Church School

With the program year in full swing at St. Philip's, many people have asked those of us who are working with children on Sunday mornings, "What curriculum are you using?" The answer, for 3-year-olds through third grade, is that we are not using a store-bought curriculum, but providing a beautiful and prayerful place, called an atrium, designed especially for them and staffed with adults who will listen to God's word together with them and repeatedly ask the question, "Who are you, Lord?" read more
