Special Invitation to Special Event

null

You are invited to embark on a journey with your fellow St. Philippians the weekend of November 8-10, 2013. Join this epic quest, led by friends of St. Philip's the Revs. Susan Anderson-Smith and Bill Roberts, and you're sure to encounter valiant heroes and saints, fearsome challenges, unexpected missions, enchanting music, dazzling art -- and of course, connect with old friends and make new ones along the way.

From Interior Journey to Outward Mission begins Friday night with a fellowship dinner, and continues with a weekend of devotion, tranquility, and reflection. You'll have an opportunity to try out activities, such as yoga, tai chi, drum circles, and Ben's Bells. You can take part in a campus-wide scavenger hunt, witness a choir rehearsal, and attend workshops that will help us explore our personal journey and communal mission in the world.

From Interior Journey to Outward Mission is designed for the entire St. Philip's family -- ages 0 to 105. Activities and workshops will be concurrently available for adults, teens, and children. Nursery care will also be provided.

As we share more and more with one another, we are bound to find that we have something in common with those around us, regardless of age or background: a single devotion we all share.

That's why there was no better place to reconnect with ourselves and our St. Philip's Family than right here -- on our campus. It is not just a place we come to on Sunday mornings. It is a place we love, and a place that fosters worship, friendship, love, and support.

To register for the retreat, visit our volunteers in the Perry Garden. Payment is accepted via check or credit card. You may also register online.

The 3-day retreat fee is $75 for adults and $40 for youth and children. A 10% discount is given for multiple full-weekend registrations. Single day registration is also available, as is financial aid (see Sara Talley or Greg Foraker for more information).

We look forward to seeing you there!

What's Going On

First Sunday
Franz Josef Haydn St. Philip's special liturgical music resumes this fall. On Sunday, October 6, Haydn's majestic Mass in Time of War will be presented as part of the liturgy for the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. Woosug Kang will conduct the St. Philip's Singers, the Canterbury Choir, and the Canterbury Choir Apprentices, accompanied by St. Philip's Chamber Orchestra. This mass was written in 1796 by Haydn when Austria was waging a losing war against France. This piece is also known as the "paukenmesse" or "drum mass" for its prominent timpani part. Many describe the mood of the mass as "martial," in part because of the prominent drum rolls in the Agnus Dei movement; however, the mood transitions from a warlike feeling to a strong sense of triumph. It is particularly appropriate for times such as these, when we are surrounded by difficult news, to enrich our sense of home and joy in the midst of trials. It truly shows the meaning of "masterpiece" from the timeless genius of Haydn. For the opening voluntary, the choirs will sing Handel's Zadok the Priest. It is suggested you arrive about 10 minutes early for the service.

cans of food Our First Sunday Food Drive takes place all morning in the Fishpond Garden. Food offerings are used to replenish our Food Pantry to help our neighbors in need. Please bring any of the following items: canned meat, fruit, vegetables, pasta sauce, soup with meat and/or pasta with meat.  In addition, we always need dry pasta, rice, dried beans, ramen noodles, boxes of mac and cheese and cereal. Additional appreciated items include baby food, diapers and dog & cat food. Please, NO GLASS JARS. Monetary donations are also always welcome! Thanks so much!

In addition, please bring any new/used paperback books, on any subject. They will be taken to Reading Between the Bars of Tucson who will send them to prisoners in Arizona.

Also, "Just Coffee" is offered for sale on the first Sunday of each month ($10/lb, beans or ground). Sales of this fair-trade coffee support this cooperative of coffee growers in Mexico.

Labyrinth Commemorative Bricks
Labyrinth committee members will be taking orders for Labyrinth Commemorative Bricks in the Perry Garden on Sunday, October 6. If you are not familiar with our labyrinth and placement of commemorative engraved bricks, please visit the beautiful labyrinth and fountain, in the Church Plaza opposite the main door of the Church. This is a very special way to remember a loved one or to celebrate a special event in our lives.

Also, keep in mind that the next Full Moon Labyrinth Walk is Friday, October 18, at 6:30 p.m. Come enjoy this meditative experience.

There will be a PowerPoint presentation, panel discussion, and a question/answer session. The panel of distinguished speakers includes Karen E. Leonard, VP of Business Development, UA Health Plans, and Dennis Regnier, President/CEO, CODAC Behavioral Health Services. The forum will be held in the Murphey Gallery.

ofrenda Ofrenda Coming in October
An Ofrenda will be installed in the Columbarium Garden on October 21 in honor of the Mexican holiday called Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead. Ofrendas, which means offering in Spanish, are set up to honor the memory of departed ancestors. After the Ofrenda is set up, everyone is invited to participate by bringing photos or mementos relating to loved ones. Contact Stella at extension 30 for more information.

The Ofrenda will remain up until after our All Souls Day memorial service on Saturday, November 2, at 7 p.m. We particularly remember those who have died within the past two years, and we celebrate all of our loved ones enjoying eternal life in the nearer presence of God. The service concludes with a procession into the Columbarium Garden for candle lighting and prayers. The celebration of life continues with a festive reception in the Perry Garden sponsored by the Parish Life Ministry.

embroidered handkerchief Fuentes Rojas/Bordando por la Paz en San Felipe
Fuentes Rojas (Red Fountains) originated in Mexico City in 2011 to raise visibility for the victims of the US-Mexico Drug War that has resulted in systemic violence in Mexico.  To make their voice public the members of Fuentes Rojas formed Bordando por la Paz (Embroidering for Peace) to create a memorial for every victim of drug war violence. The memorials display information about the victim's death in words hand-embroidered with red thread on a man's white handkerchief. The movement has spread around the world to Latin America, Europe, Asia and the US. Join us for a taller (workshop) on Sunday, October 27, 1-3 pm,  at the Labyrinth Fountain at St. Philips. Together we'll each embroider, in red thread on a white handkerchief, known details of the victim's death based on police records. Instruction will be provided. We'll discuss plans for future public embroidery events. You are invited into a movement of remembrance and solidarity with our neighbors who struggle each day to survive the US-Mexico Drug War in their communities. For more information and to receive a simple and inexpensive supply list, contact Suzanne or call 325-4469. Read more about Fuentes Rojas here.

gratitude card Share Your Gratitude Story!

Two parishioners have submitted unsolicited stories about what St. Philip's means to them, and we'd love to have more! YOUR stories can help bring the JOY of St. Philip's alive, both on paper and electronically. Please consider sending your stories of the JOY you've experienced through doing God's work in the world at St. Philip's. Maybe it's 100 words (which can run in the bulletin), or a longer piece for our "Good News" publication. Send to parishnews@stphilipstucson.org.

Hospital Visitor Ministry

hospital entrance If you have ever been in the hospital, you know how reassuring it is to have a visit from your church. Our clergy visits hospitalized parishioners every Tuesday and Thursday, but we have few clergy and many members. We are fortunate that some St. Philip's parishioners volunteer to go to hospitals in their neighborhoods (Northwest, Central or East) to visit hospitalized St. Philippians on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Join this needed and personally fulfilling ministry. To discuss or volunteer, please contact Jim Prescott-Smith or call 577-3779.

Two Family Caregiver Support Groups
Are you caring for an elder who is demanding, difficult, or belligerent? Are you struggling with siblings who criticize you yet don't share in caring for your elderly family member? A caregiver support group helps alleviate caregiver stress and frustration.  Our group of family caregivers shares experiences, exchanges information, and, with the help of the facilitator, devises strategies for dealing with difficult behaviors, insurance forms and other conflicts and tensions that come with caregiving. Come join the discussion! Two groups are offered at St. Philip's: first and third Wednesdays of every month, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., in Salvia; and second and fourth Thursdays of every month, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Salvia. St. Philip's-Pima Council on Aging Family Caregiver Support Groups are FREE and open to all family caregivers.  Email Brigid or Shannon for more information.
