Colorado Flood Relief The Office of the Bishop, Diocese of Colorado, is working closely with Episcopal Relief & Development to identify needs and provide financial support in coming days and weeks to those affected by the flooding. The Office of the Bishop is also accepting donations payable to "The Diocese of Colorado" marked "Flood Relief." These funds will be used for immediate needs-food, clothing, temporary shelter and medical care, and will be used along with emergency funding from Episcopal Relief & Development for these short term needs and longer term recovery needs as those are identified in the days ahead.
An effective way to respond to disasters in the United States, such as the ongoing floods in Colorado, is to make a contribution to Episcopal Relief and Development's US Disaster Response Fund (click on Individual Donation, or click on the scrolling news update bar to read the latest information). Donations made by check may be mailed to Episcopal Relief & Development, P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058.
Prayers in Response to Navy Yard Shooting On Monday the Washington National Cathedral offered prayers throughout the day in response to the shootings at the Washington Navy Yard. The Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean of the Cathedral, said "We mourn for those who have died, and we continue to grieve the persistence of gun violence in our nation." Heavenly Father, we pray for the repose of the souls of those lost in Monday's tragedy in Washington D.C.: Michael Arnold, Martin Bodrog, Arthur Daniels, Sylvia Frasier, Kathleen Gaarde, John Roger Johnson, Mary Frances DeLorenzo Knight, Frank Kohler, Vishnu Pandit, Kenneth Bernard Proctor, Gerald Read, Richard Michael Ridgell, and Aaron Alexis. Bless and aid their loved ones, those who serve and protect us, and all of those impacted by the news of the day. Amen. (by Lisa M. Hendey)

Instructed Eucharist at 9 a.m.
An Instructed Eucharist provides an opportunity to learn more about the worship we experience every Sunday. Verbal and printed explanations of the parts of the service will be offered throughout, in place of a sermon. If you missed the Instructed Eucharist last Sunday at the 11:15 a.m. service, you have another opportunity this coming Sunday at 9 a.m. This service provides an opportunity for people new to the Episcopal Church, and even for those who are "cradle" Episcopalians, to learn more about what's behind what we do in our liturgies. Plan to attend, and invite a friend!
Three Interesting Forums at 10:15 a.m.
Adult Formation Ministries is offering three varied and inspiring forums on Sunday, September 22.
In the West Gallery, refugee Tibetan Buddhist monks, who are currently visiting the University of Arizona, will talk about their work on the sand compassion mandala project at the university and how it connects with the foundations of Buddhist teaching and their lives as monks in the tradition. The monks will bless donations of food with their beautiful chanting prayers.
In the East Gallery, St. Philip's Border & Immigration Ministry presents "The Dream Is Now." This 30-minute documentary gives voice to and puts a human face on the undocumented children of immigrants who are desperate to earn their citizenship and give back to the only country they've ever called "home." Young representatives from Scholarships A-Z will be at the screening of this documentary and will lead a question and answer period following.
In the La Paz Room, St. Philip's Mental Illness Ministry presents "One Sacred Nation Healing." Ralph Romero offers help to people in recovery from mental illness, as well as their families, as they build their sacred path of life to spirituality. Ralph will share his remarkable story and this moving approach to well-being built on Native American Natural Healings practices. Co-sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Southern Arizona.

There will be guided and self-guided tours of the campus, with ministry informational displays in various ministry areas. Snacks and sandwiches will be served! Invite them to come with you. Send them to the web site (click on the "Open House" link for basic St. Philip's information) or to our "Good News" publication to begin learning about who we are and the ways we serve each other and the community around us. The first Friends of Music concert of the 2013-2014 season will feature the Kingfisher String Quartet, on Sunday, September 29, at 2 p.m. in the Church. Tucson's leading chamber group, composed of Benjamin Nisbet and Ellen Chamberlain, violin, Emma Votapek, viola, and Anne Gratz, cello, will perform quartets by Beethoven and Brahms. The Kingfisher String Quartet was founded in 2008, and have since established themselves as one of Southern Arizona's finest chamber ensembles. During their time together, the KSQ has combined a mastery of the standard quartet repertoire with an ambitious collaborative schedule to critical and public acclaim. As members of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the individual players in this exciting group have established themselves firmly in the Tucson performing community, while also diligently working to educate young musicians. Admission is by donation ($15 suggested). There are fun and different events in the offing this season for Friends of Music. Read all about it on the new Friends of Music web site. October First Sunday Music
On Sunday, October 6, at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services, the St. Philip's Singers, Canterbury Choir, and Canterbury Apprentices join forces with chamber orchestra to present Josef Haydn's majestic Mass in the Time of War as part of the liturgy. This mass is most appropriate in times when we are surrounded by difficult news, to enrich our sense of hope and joy while going through trials; it is truly a masterpiece that illustrates the timeless genius of Haydn. Newcomer Orientation in October
Newcomer Orientation Sessions provide the perfect opportunity to ask questions and gain information about the life of the Parish. Four sessions meet at 10:15 a.m. in the Renouf/Nelson Library. October 6: Singing and Praying (Woosug Kang, Director of Music, will give an overview of the music program, and a representative from the Friends of Music will speak of the special music events the group sponsors and how they support the music program at St. Philip's). October 13: Caring and Sharing (Bill Kruse, Worship Commissioner, will give a brief overview of the many ministries serving the congregation, the surrounding community, and the world). October 20: Preaching and Teaching (the Rev. Greg Foraker, Assistant to the Rector, will profile the clergy of St. Philip's, describe the various worship services offered, and present information about the varied, interesting, and inspiring Adult Formation offerings). October 27: Giving and Receiving (Beth Brouillette, a member of the Vestry, will address St. Philip's approach to stewardship as it relates to our use of time and talent). Yoga Unlimited Begins in October
Yoga Unlimited is in its fourteenth year at St. Philip's. In a nurturing, safe setting you will learn to move your body mindfully, in gentle as well as challenging ways. You will tap into the body-mind connection through self-awareness exercises, conscious breathing techniques, visualization, deep relaxation, and beginning meditation practices - all designed to bring strength, flexibility, balance, and profound well-being to body, mind, and spirit. Yoga for Beginners classes are offered on Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m. and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. The fee for 8 weeks is $75. Discounts are available for couples or for those taking more than one class per week. The next courses start October 1 and 3. Instructor Hanna Soule is a certified Integrative Yoga Therapist with over 30 years of teaching experience, in both Europe and the USA. She has studied with many internationally known teachers of Yoga, meditation, and movement and has developed her own eclectic style of Yoga. For more information and to register, please contact Hanna Soule at 623-6163. Sign Language Classes at St. Philip's
Currently, American Sign Language (ASL) is the third largest language being used in USA and Canada. More schools and colleges are offering ASL as part of their second language requirement. Come and learn from someone whose first language is sign language. Parishioner Clifford R. Rowley was a research chemist until he retired in 2001 after 35 years with a chemical manufacturer in NJ. After retirement, he taught at TUSD for a few years as a substitute teacher at Tucson Magnet High School (THS). He currently serves on the board of the New York School for the Deaf. Before coming to St. Philip's, he served on the vestry at St Peter's Episcopal Church in Mountain Lakes, NJ. Sign up to participate in the exciting learning experience with communicating in silence. The course will meet weekly from October 13 until mid-December on Sundays at 10:15 a.m. If there is demand, an evening class may be also scheduled. Preregistration is requested. Please contact Cliff Rowley at crrowley22@gmail.com. PCIC Accountability Session
Tucson was recently identified as the 6th poorest city in the country. Interested in how our city and county leaders will address this? Then come to the Pima County Interfaith Council (PCIC) Community Issues Accountability Session on October 6, at 2 p.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, First and Ft Lowell. All four candidates for City Council have confirmed their attendance. They will be asked individually about their positions on jobs, bus fares, and other issues relating to poverty. In addition, County Supervisor Richard Elias will address immigration and workforce issues. What happens in the city affects all of us, wherever we live. For more information, contact Rev. Leah Sandwell-Weiss or call 661-8696.

Wanted: Paper Flowers for Ofrenda
An Ofrenda will be installed in the Columbarium in late October in honor of the Mexican holiday called Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead. Ofrendas, which means offering in Spanish, are set up to remember and honor the memory of departed ancestors. Last year's flowers are ragged. If you have any paper flowers you would like to donate, please bring them to Stella during office hours, or if you have to bring them on Sunday, it is okay to leave them on the receptionist desk. After the Ofrenda is set up, everyone is invited to participate by bringing photos or mementos relating to loved ones. Contact Stella at extension 30 for more information. Congregational Photo Op
We are going to take photos of the congregation on Sunday, October 20. A professional photographer will take our photo during the parish announcements time at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services, and he will also gather the congregation on the steps outside the Great Doors immediately after the 11:15 a.m. service. Plan to attend one of those services that day to be part of the photo! Renewal of Vows Service
St. Philip's will hold a renewal of marriage vows and commitment promises on Saturday, February 15, 2014. If you are interested in participating, please call the church office to sign up. Please do so before the end of November. Organizational help is needed if participants wish to have a reception afterwards. If you are interested in planning a reception, please contact the Rev. John Kitagawa. Save the Date: Holy Land Pilgrimage
Join our Rector on an inspiring journey of faith! We will visit the major Christian sites, with a brush with ancient and modern Israel. It is an opportunity to get better acquainted with Jesus of the Bible, and to deepen one's own faith. There will be an opportunity to renew Baptismal vows in the River Jordan, and to renew marriage vows in Cana. The dates for this memorable pilgrimage are 11-23 June 2014, meaning departure from USA on 11 June 2014, arriving in Israel on 12 June 2014; and leaving Israel on 22 June 2014 and arriving in the USA on 23 June 2014. For more information, please contact the Rev. Greg Foraker. Share Your Ministry Story!
Two parishioners have submitted unsolicited stories about what St. Philip's means to them, and we'd love to have more! YOUR stories can help bring the JOY of St. Philip's alive, both on paper and electronically. Please consider sending your stories of the JOY you've experienced through doing God's work in the world at St. Philip's. Maybe it's 100 words (which can run in the bulletin), or a longer piece for our "Good News" publication. Send to parishnews@stphilipstucson.org.
