Announcement from the Rector
|
Dear Friends in Christ:
I am very pleased to announce that Anne Sawyer discerned the Spirit moving her to ask about the possibility of exercising a part of her priestly ministry at St. Philip's. After our discussions this summer, I am delighted to welcome Anne to our volunteer team of Affiliated Clergy. The brief bio provided highlights her skills and ongoing work with the Imago Dei Episcopal Middle School, as well as her deep roots in the St. Philip's community. Anne will be most visible as celebrant and assistant at Sunday and weekday Eucharists, with an occasional opportunity to proclaim the Gospel from the pulpit. I know that those who already know Anne will welcome her, and those who do not yet know her will enjoy getting to know her.
Faithfully,
John The Rev. Canon John E. Kitagawa, Rector
The Rev. Anne Sawyer is Co-founder and Head of School of Imago Dei Middle School. Imago Dei was founded in 2006, operates today with a dedicated staff of 17 and an operating budget of $1.1M, and proudly has 60 graduates. Anne holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Arizona, a Master of Arts in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago, and a Masters of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School.
Anne's work with Imago Dei creates the opportunity for her to visit parishes throughout Tucson and Southern Arizona. In addition to her ministry at school and church, she is active in a number of educational and community organizations, including the Foundation for Episcopal Campus Ministry, Arizona Episcopal Schools Foundation, National Association of Episcopal Schools, Episcopal Urban School Alliance, Tucson Presidio Rotary Club, and ASU School of Social Work.
Anne is so pleased to return to St. Philip's, which is where she attended church with her family as a child, served as an intern during seminary, was sponsored for ordination, and was ordained as a transitional deacon. Since her ordination to the priesthood, she has had the pleasure to serve at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and Grace St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Nonetheless, St. Philip's has always held a very special place in her heart and has always been home. She is grateful for the honor to worship with all of you once again.

Sunday, September 8 |
St. Philip's will be a busy place on Sunday, September 8! On "Homecoming Sunday," we draw on the great fall tradition of Homecoming -- to reconnect with each other and our traditions at a special fellowship time in the Murphey Gallery beginning at 10:15 a.m. Bring your stories from summer, along with your hopes and plans for fall. You are also invited to bring a potluck finger food to share. Concurrently with the Homecoming celebration, the Art Gallery will celebrate the opening of the All St. Philip's art show. Many of our Parish artists will be there to chat and tell you about their medium. The reception will continue until 2 p.m., so linger a little longer. Breakfast resumes on September 8! From 8 to 9 a.m., enjoy the "best breakfast in town" for a donation of only $5/person ($3 children). Breakfast is a great place to gather with old pals or get to know new friends! On Homecoming Sunday we also welcome back our adult choirs. They will be in good form, having just completed a weekend retreat of music-making. A "Comfy Space" worship service will be held at 9:15 a.m. in the Children's Chapel. This is worship for families and friends of God who are prone to "wiggle" a bit in church. Worshippers of all ages are invited. " Just Coffee," normally offered for sale on the first Sunday of the month, will be offered for sale on September 8 ($10/lb, beans or ground). Sales of this fair-trade coffee support the Just Coffee project, which participates in addressing one of the root causes of labor migration from Mexico to the USA by supporting a coffee grower cooperative based in Salvador Urbina, Chiapas, Mexico. The Titan Valley Warheads, a popular five-piece bluegrass band, returns to St. Philip's for a concert on Sunday, September 8, at 2 p.m. in the Church. Known for their tight harmonies and instrumental skills, Titan Valley has been voted Best Bluegrass Band by the Tucson Area Music Awards and won the prestigious "Best Band" title at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. The band currently consists of Gary Kuitert (mandolin), Earl Edmonson (guitar), Ed Davenport (bass), Andy McCune (banjo), and Tom Rhodes (fiddle). Admission is by donation ($15 suggested).

Natalie Hall
| Cherub Choir Begins at St. Philip's!We are thrilled to announce that St. Philip's will begin our own Cherub Choir program. It is open to ages 4-8 (kids outside that range can be considered, so do not hesitate to ask!). This choir will primarily involve early music education--learning the basics of music, learning the sense of rhythm and pitch in fun classes with our new Director, Natalie Hall. Ms. Hall studies Music Education at U of A with an emphasis on voice. She also works as the Assistant for young voices of Tucson Girls Chorus, and she will also be helping as the Instructor for the After-School Music Program. We are excited to have her on board! It is always a challenge to spread the word around when you begin a program. We would appreciate it immensely if you can let your friends know that we will begin this wonderful program. If you have any questions, or would like more details, please contact our Director of Music, Woosug Kang, at woosug.kang@stphilipstucson.org or 299-6421 ext 19. After-School Music Program Volunteer Orientation This Week
The After School Music Program will begin next week -- on September 9. We still need a violin teacher and 20 more volunteers to be ready. Won't you consider giving 2 to 3 hours one afternoon a week (Monday through Thursday) to help these wonderful children. You will work with others and make new friends. You will enrich your life and the lives of the children. There are many jobs; help with homework, ride in a van to pick up children at school, teach piano or be with a child while they practice, teach violin or help children as they practice. You can also be a snack person or (simple short job) a substitute. Share your gifts. You will be so happy you did. WE NEED YOU! Visit our table during Coffee Hour to get more information from a volunteer or director Barby Goldschmid, or come to an orientation this Thursday, September 5, in the music center at 2 p.m. to learn more. Any questions call Barby 237-8881. | The After-School Music Program Choir with the St. Nicholas Choir and leaders at recent Choir Camp
| Compline Services Second Tuesdays
On the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m., the Sarum Compline Service is prayed in the Baptistry. Compline is the last monastic prayer service of the day before the monks retire. The service is sung in Gregorian chants, but knowledge of how to chant and how to read Gregorian chant notations is not necessary. Everyone is invited to join us to pray and reclaim this wonderful Anglican liturgical tradition. The next service will be on Tuesday, September 10.
Lay Eucharistic Ministry Training
What is a LEM? A LEM (Lay Eucharistic Minister) is a member of St. Philip's who takes communion to members who are not able to attend church. We visit twice a month at homes or assisted living facilities. This enables members of the Body of Christ who have been unable to attend church services to join in partaking of our common meal. We LEMs often say that being a LEM enriches our lives, as it opens us up to the suffering, pain, and acute needs of others. This ministry to others is an expression of Christ's ministry to us; it is, in fact, one of the ways God touches others. Do you seek a deeper relationship with God? Are you being called by God to this ministry? The next LEM training will be held on Sunday, September 15, at 10:15 a.m. or 12:15 p.m. To enroll in the training or learn more about this ministry, please contact Kathy Zwald or call 203-1234. Mental Health First Aid Class
St. Philip's Mental Illness Ministry is offering a Mental Health First Aid course, presented by Community Partnership of Southern Arizona (CPSA). This 8-hour program teaches family members, friends, teachers, co-workers, and neighbors how to recognize and help someone who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis. Participants learn the signs and symptoms of the most common mental health problems, where and when to get help, and what type of help has been shown to be effective. Depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, substance use disorders, and self-injury; suicidal behaviors, acute stress reaction after trauma, panic attack, acute psychotic behavior, and drug overdose. Thursdays, September 19 and 26, from 12:30 to 5 p.m. There is no charge, but registration is requested. To register, contact Sharon Nielsen or call 299-0682. Invite a Friend to Open House! Great plans are underway for our Open House on Sunday, September 29, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Lots of activities and a tour will give guests an opportunity to meet us and learn about our various ministries. If we want to have guests present, we all need to practice "invitational hospitality." Think about the people you know -- at work, school, children's play groups, or other activities, neighbors, or even family members -- who might find meaning and joy in Christ's beloved community, specifically St. Philip's. Invite them to come with you. Send them to the web site or to our " Good News" publication to begin learning about who we are and the ways we serve each other and the community around us.

EfM Update
EfM (Education for Ministry) has been totally revamped. It is a new curriculum with new study materials. We will begin in the late fall and run through next May with the new texts and study guides that have been recently adopted. Returning students will find the changes refreshing, and graduates are invited to return to update their knowledge. Newcomers are welcome to a fascinating program that explores the Old and New Testament, church history, and the philosophy of the Anglican tradition. For more information, contact the Rev. Ralph Taylor at or 229-9170. Join Our Color Run Team! Attention colorful St. Philippians -- St. Philip's is fielding a team for the Color Run in December, and you're invited to participate! Save the Date: Holy Land Pilgrimage for Adults Join our Rector on an inspiring journey of faith! We will visit the major Christian sites, with a brush with ancient and modern Israel. The dates for this memorable pilgrimage are 11-23 June 2014, meaning departure from USA on 11 June 2014, arriving in Israel on 12 June 2014; and leaving Israel on 22 June 2014 and arriving in the USA on 23 June 2014. St. Philip's Featured on Arizona Public Media
In a show entitled " Buildings That Changed Tucson," Tucson architect Bob Vint talked about four buildings that in his opinion illustrate Tucson's history. The portion featuring St. Philip's begins at about the 2:20 mark. It was interesting that he noted that developer John Murphey built not just a church but also a "community center." It might be worthwhile to ask ourselves how St. Philip's is and is not still functioning that way.
