For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.
If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.
We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Prayers for Firefighters
|
We join in prayer for the brave firefighters who perished yesterday near Yarnell, Arizona. We are so often unaware of the courage of our public servants who protect our lives and property until a tragedy like this strikes. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude for they are true Arizona heroes.
Our thoughts are with their loved ones, and with the residents of that area who have lost their homes.

Now Collecting

First Sunday Food Drive
Next Sunday, July 7, is our next First Sunday Food Collection. Highest needs at our Pantry at the moment are canned meat, canned fruit, dry rice & beans, and canned meat pasta. Could also use baby food and diapers. All food collected on First Sundays supports the St. Philips Food Pantry. Send Your Paperback Books to Prison! Christ instructed compassion toward prisoners, and our first effort will be reaching out with the companionship that a book can bring. Please bring any new/used paperback books, on any subject, to church next Sunday. We will take the books to Reading Between the Bars of Tucson who will send them to prisoners in Arizona. Textbooks, references, how-to's, biographies, histories, novels, are all needed. Any books prohibited to prisoners will be exchanged for approved books. "Gifts of Love" School Supplies Drive Many families are financially unable to provide school supplies for their children at the beginning of the school year. To that end, Interfaith Community Services is collecting supplies for the 2013-14 school year. The drive will end on Sunday, July 14. You may place donations in the red box decorated with pictures of school supplies. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Most-needed items include backpacks, binders, notebook paper, spiral notebooks, scissors, glue sticks, folders, markers, rulers, highlighters, protractors, erasers, pens and pencils, and crayons. For more information contact the Rev. Beverley Edminster at 885-4266. Summer Migrant Pack Drive The Border and Immigration Ministry and Outreach Commission will be collecting items for Migrant Survival Packets on Sundays, July 14 and July 21, in the Fishpond Garden. Bags will be assembled and delivered to Humanitarian Border Solutions. Items needed for the packs are: bottled water; small bottles of Gatorade or similar sports drink; small juice containers with straws; small packets of nuts, trail mix, dried fruit; chips, fig bars, cookies, granola, snack bars; cheese or peanut butter crackers; small pop-top lid meat or tuna; protein bars; beef jerky; hard candy or Chicklet-type gum; applesauce and fruit cups with spoons. Cash gifts will be used to supplement food contributions and to purchase plastic bags. This effort supports Humanitarian Border Solutions, Naco, AZ, an organization devoted to providing humanitarian aid to migrants along the US/Mexico border. Save Your Pop Tops This summer, save pop tops from aluminum beverage cans, to be given to Ronald McDonald House. They may be placed in the credenza in the office hallway. And don't throw away the cans -- save them AT HOME to be gathered at the end of the summer and donated to Hope Animal Shelter. Do not bring cans to the office now; cans left in the office before August 25 will be disposed of. Toiletry Ministry As you travel this summer, bring back with you the individual-sized toiletries available in hotel rooms. The toiletry ministry takes them to two shelters in Tucson, Project Emerge and Casa Mariposa. Place your donations in the credenza in the office hallway that leads to the Galleries.

What's Going On |
Summer Children's Programming
Children's Ministries programming continues in the summer with a variety of offerings, including "Comfy Space" services (second Sundays, 9:15 a.m. in the Children's Chapel), All-Generations services (third Sundays, 9 a.m. in the Church), and Summer Stories or Music Time (all other Sundays, 9 a.m. in the Children's Chapel). Children attending Summer Stories or Music Time must have filled out registration forms. Parents are welcome to drop off their children for these activities. "Comfy Space" and All-Generations services are designed for families, and we respectfully ask that parents and children attend together. We look forward to seeing and worshipping with you and your family. Independence Day Ice Cream Social Those lazy, hazy, 3-digit-degree days of summer have rolled out. So the Parish Life Ministry is rolling out another dose of fun, food, and fellowship -- and Ice Cream -- to help you deal with the reality of living in Tucson in the summertime. Please join us in the Murphey Gallery on Sunday, July 7, for a sweet treat from 10:15 till 11:15 a.m. We promise multiple flavors of ice cream and a variety of toppings, including gummy bears. This will be a 4th of July celebration with red, white, and blue decorations and patriotic background music. Come one, come all, and we'll have a ... bowl of ice cream ... a time to visit with friends old and new ... and a time to celebrate our nation's independence.
Summer Sunday Breakfasts with J2AThe J2A Youth Group and their families will be offering a delicious, light breakfast on Sunday mornings from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. in the East Gallery, beginning July 14 and continuing through August 25. The menu will include bagels and cream cheese, yogurt, granola, and fruit, juice and coffee. The cost is $5/adult and $3/children age 12 and under. We are raising funds to support our Pilgrimage trip and we appreciate your support. Please mark these dates on your calendar and plan to join us! Friends of Music Summer Concert Series
St. Philip's Friends of Music's popular summer concert series is back! The first two concerts will be Sundays, July 14 and July 21. Concerts continue in August and September. Concerts are at 2 p.m. in the Church (admission by donation -- $15 suggested). On Sunday, July 14, at 2 p.m. in the Church, the Ironwood Trio, consisting of Ji Sun Lee (piano/organ), Michael Lich (classical guitar), and Robert Matheson (double bass), will perform an afternoon of riveting music from classics to original compositions. The concert will feature works by Debussy, Isaac, Piazzolla, and Vivaldi as well as the premiere of Michael Lich's new composition Trio Sonata, for classical guitar, double bass and organ. The Ironwood Trio is rooted in tradition, but likes to surprise and delight the audience in fresh and creative ways. The series continues on Sunday, July 21, at 2 p.m. in the Church, with the Boone/Vivona Jazz Quartet. Piano, trombone, harp, bass, and drums play jazz standards from the American Songbook. Rob Boone and Christine Vivona perform at Jazz Festivals in the United States playing standards in an unusual jazz setting of piano, trombone, and harp. They'll be joined by Jack Wood on bass and Cory Boone on drums. Come hear your favorites!

On the Horizon |
Wine and Scripture -- Both Aged to Perfection! Celebrate midsummer with summer wines and well-paired samples of scripture. St. Philip's Wine Study and Bible Tasting series is a fantastic way to gather with friends known and new to learn a bit about the Bible and enjoy fantastic wines. A wine expert (sommelier) and a scripture scholar educate our taste buds and enrich our experience. Open to those 21 years and older. Please bring a bottle of wine (or non-alcoholic beverage) to share. Our July study and tasting meets Sunday, July 28, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the home of hosts Sara and Eric Carrizales. Reserve your spot soon; space is limited! RSVP to Sara at St Philip's, 299-6421 or email Brigid. Directions will be provided with your confirmation. 2013 Summer Lecture Series: Interpretation of Natural Disasters
The subject of the 2013 Summer Lecture Series, put on by the UA Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies together with St. Philip's, will be how ordinary people expressed their views of the universe in explaining extreme events in late medieval and early modern Europe. Their reactions give us a way of seeing into the mentalities of the populace at large and not simply of the learned. Floods and famines, epidemic disease, fires and earthquakes shook the lives of everyone when they struck. All looked to heaven and to human sin for explanations in a pre-scientific world. These lectures provide a unique opportunity for scholars training in the field to prepare a project and present their work to a large audience at St. Philip's. We also welcome expert faculty members of the Division as a culmination of this series. Sundays, August 4, 11, 18, and 25, at 10:15 a.m. in the Bloom Music Center.

Stories from St. Philip's |
Tucson Summer Music St. Philip's has an active After-School Music Program during the school year, in which children not only learn fundamentals of choral singing, enjoy snacks, and receive mentoring with their homework, but also have weekly private lessons on a musical instrument. So what happens to these students' private lessons when school is out and the After-School Music Program takes a summer break? They, and many other fortunate Tucson children, continue their studies via the Tucson Summer Music Program. Read more. Lay Eucharistic Ministry: Shut In but Not Shut Out The people who pick up a little black kit at the altar rail near the end of the service on second and fourth Sundays are Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEMs). LEMs bring the Holy Communion to those who are unable to attend a Sunday service because they are ill, infirm, home with a newborn, etc. Following communion, LEMs go forward to the altar to receive the vessels containing the consecrated bread and wine. In turn, they will carry this to members of the Body of Christ who have been unable to attend church services so that they, too, may partake of our common meal. As LEMs, we feel that this ministry has enriched our lives, as it opens us up to the suffering, pain, and acute needs of others. This ministry to others is an expression of Christ's ministry to them; it is, in fact, one of the ways God touches others -- through us. On June 23, seven of our sixteen LEMs were commissioned at the 9:00 a.m. service. Read more.
