Greetings!

For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Rabbi Samuel M. Cohon Pulpit Exchange
This weekend, beginning today, St. Philip's and Temple Emanu-El are participating in a pulpit exchange. Friday, May 31, at 7:30 p.m., all are invited to hear the Rev. Canon John E. Kitagawa preach at Temple Emanu-El's Shabbat service. Temple Emanu-El is located at 225 N. Country Club Rd (one block north of Broadway Blvd). On Sunday, June 2, Rabbi Sam Cohon will preach at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. He will also lead a forum at 10:15 a.m. on Jewish religious development and the balance between home and synagogue/public observance. We look forward to continuing these dialogue opportunities with friends from Temple Emanu-El.

Christian Holiness book New Forum Series
A Sunday morning forum series entitled "Christian Holiness and Human Sexuality" will span the five Sundays in June (June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30), at 10:15 a.m. in La Paz. In these five sessions, participants will examine biblical, historical, theological, ethical, and liturgical traditions to answer the question of how Christians can combine sexual expression with Christian holiness, developing a pathway to identify the qualities of human sexuality as lived by baptized Christians that will help partners involved in a same-sex relationship, their children and families, the church, and the wider society to live in ways that are faithful to both our identities and the gospel itself. Specifically, the series will focus on how much the world has changed over the 5000 years of Judeo-Christian history, causing changes in the views dominating public and church discourse centering on the role of human sexuality and marriage.  Questions of Christian holiness, human sexual identity, and the church's role in blessing lifelong committed relationships of its members are serious issues around which feelings run high and people of good will often disagree.  This series is designed for LGBT and non-LGBT Christian individuals in the hope that if all of us open ourselves to the fullness and diversity of our tradition's many voices, we will learn to walk together in a new way as we listen for God's call to be faithful to each other, our tradition, and God. Participants may want to purchase: Adams, M. M. et.al. (2011) Christian Holiness and Human Sexuality: A Study Guide for Episcopalians.  New York: Church Publishing Company.

Bruce Phillips Still Space for Older Age Group in Summer Arts Camp
This summer St. Philip's will offer a week long Arts Camp June 3-7 from 9 a.m. till noon. We will explore the concept of pattern, incorporating fiber and fabric as a medium. Each camper will create and take home a wall hanging and will work with a team to create a banner to hang in Linda Rosenfield the Children's Chapel. We will also experiment with rhythmic and musical patterns and create our own songs. The camp fee is $80 per child and includes all materials. Partial scholarships are available. Linda Rosenfield Camp staff includes visual artist Linda Rosenfield and children's musician Bruce Phillips. Unfortunately, the camp is at full enrollment for the younger grades; there is still space for older children, but you should contact Bruce Phillips immediately or call 971-6779.

Civil Conversation Workshop
Center for Community Dialogue logo In April, the Outreach Commission and Border & Immigration Ministries sponsored a Civil Conversation workshop. Response was so enthusiastic that they are organizing another opportunity to explore techniques and tools for starting those difficult conversations and responding to hostile rhetoric. "Civil Conversation # 2: It Starts with Me," will be held on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the East Gallery. In this session, we'll focus on our own role and personal responsibility as individuals in creating an environment for productive communication. Learn new skills, develop a "tool kit" of strategies, and deepen your experience with the Circles process through one-on-one and small group experiences. Come prepared to participate, reflect, learn and enjoy this lively workshop! Ms. Catherine Tornbom, Director of the Center for Community Dialogue at Our Family Services, Tucson, will again be our leader. Ms. Tornbom has over 30 years' experience in organizational development and alternative dispute resolution. She is a dynamic and engaging facilitator. Registration fee of $15 includes lunch and materials. To register by June  26, call the office at 299-6421 or contact Suzanne. prison Prison Ministry Survey
... from Isaiah 61:1: "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound." ... and from Matthew 25:36: "I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me."
The Spirit of God is working in St. Philip's. A new ministry -- prescribed by Biblical imperative -- is forming. Would you like to share your experience and/or ideas? Let us know of your interest and ideas by taking this survey.

Summer Reading in the Renouf/Nelson Library

If you have been thinking of adding to your summer reading list -- why not check out what's new in the Renouf/Nelson Library at St. Philip's? The library is well known as an excellent source for Biblical research, but it also excels in many other areas of interest. The library committee would like to offer some ideas for your summer reading.

Due to the kind generosity of one of our parishioners we now have beautiful leather-bound volumes of classic literature in the Special Collections section of the East Bay of the library. Some of those classics include the well-known Ivanhoe, Moby Dick, and Don Quixote, to name just a few. We have also built resources for special ministries at St. Philip's, including Border & Immigration, Mental Health, and Elder Care. We are continually adding new titles, which can be found in the New Book display. These include Proof of Heaven by Eben Alexander, M.D., The Future of Faith by Harvey Cox, A People's History of Christianity by Diana Butler Bass, God and Government in the Ghetto by Michael Owens, The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo, Radical Reliance -- Living 24/7 with God at the Center by Joseph M. Stowell, and many more.

We invite you to drop in, spend some time in a comfy chair, and be amazed at what you will find! Check us out!
