Bishop's Annual Visit
The Rt. Rev. Kirk Stevan Smith, Bishop of Arizona, will make his annual visit to St. Philip's on Sunday, May 5. He will celebrate the Rites of Confirmation and Reception at the 11:15 a.m. liturgy (incense will be used). Please pray for the following candidates as they prepare for Confirmation and Reception: Robert Eric Carrizales, Victoria Holter, Jennifer Kristine Pajor, Matthew Holter, Michael Allen Pajor, and Caitlin Johanna O'Malley and Christopher Carlyle Baker (from the Episcopal Campus Ministry at the University of Arizona). Bishop Smith will also celebrate and preach at the 9 a.m. service. At 10:15 a.m. he will meet with St. Philip's children and youth in the Children's Center Courtyard. He will join us for the St. Philip's Day Fiesta after the 11:15 a.m. service. At all services that day, special offering envelopes will be available for the Bishop's Discretionary Fund, which is used to help clergy and their families in need. First Sunday Music First Sunday Music on Sunday, May 5, at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services will be Francis Poulenc's master work Gloria sung by soprano soloist Mary Paul, along with the St. Philip's Singers, the Canterbury Choir, and the Canterbury Choir Apprentices, accompanied by St. Philip's Chamber Orchestra. The service will begin with the "Gloria" movement used as the Voluntary, so it is suggested you plan to arrive a bit earlier than usual. Food Drive
In conjunction with First Sunday Music, St. Philip's sponsors a first Sunday "Food for Hunger" food drive. You are invited to bring offerings of nonperishable food in unbreakable containers. Food may be placed outside the entrance to the Church. Food offerings are shared between St. Philip's food pantry and the food pantry at Interfaith Community Services. St. Philip's Day Fiesta A Fiesta in the Plaza will begin at 11:30 a.m. with activities for all, such as games, races, face painting, and a dunk tank, and featuring a build-your-own taco bar for lunch. The cost for the Fiesta is $7 per person ($20 per family), payable at the event. Proceeds support St. Philip's J2A youth group pilgrimage to Taizé, France, and Canterbury, England, in the summer of 2014. Beer and a selection of wines will be available for purchase. Proceeds from beverage sales will support the music program at St. Philip's. Final Sunday for Breakfast The Sunday hot breakfast is ending for the Summer. Come join us for the last hot breakfast on May 5 and say goodbye and thank our wonderful cook Karen and volunteers. The kitchen will be closed for cleaning this summer; however, we are looking into seeing if a group would like to offer a continental cold breakfast in July and August. Details will be announced if this can be arranged. This breakfast club ministry is always looking for volunteers to help purchase and prepare food, set up tables, and clean dishes. It is a wonderful ministry that helps create a welcoming environment for parishioners to meet and get to know each other better. For more information contact Sharla Darby.

Ascension Day Atmospherics: Up, Up, and Away!
The Ascension of Jesus is a staple chief Feast in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. If St. Augustine is to believed, its practice is lodged securely in the 4th, century C.E., and quite possibly much earlier since it appears in early baptismal formulas quoted by Hippolytus early in the 3rd century C.E., a precursor to the Apostles Creed. From the 5th century, the Ascension was sometimes celebrated in conjunction with either Easter or Pentecost, although practices and depictions vary in the Western and Orthodox churches, and is firmly ensconced in the mosaics of art, poetry, and music. Typically, it occurs 40 days after Easter, and 10 days prior to Pentecost. In some European countries, Ascension is marked as a public holiday during which schools and businesses are closed. At St. Philip's this year, we will celebrate Ascension Day on May 9, with a special service at 7 p.m. in the Church, followed by a festive reception in the Perry Garden. The service will include incense. Read more.
St. Philip's Hike: Mindful Movement
On the morning of Saturday, May 11, join the Rev. Vicki Hesse and Sam McClung for a hike in Sabino Canyon within the Santa Catalina Mountains. Sabino Canyon is a fee area. Goals are to enjoy time with fellow parishioners, and make spiritual connections with nature. A potluck lunch follows the hike. Contact Sam McClung if you wish to join the group or want further information. Read about the January parish hike. May 12: Children and Youth Recognition Sunday
On Sunday, May 12, we will recognize our St. Nicholas choristers, handbell ringers, acolytes, Chalice Players, Church School teachers and youth leaders, and high school graduates. We will have a special youth preacher at 7:45, 9, and 11:15 a.m. After-School Music Program Concert On Tuesday, May 14, at 5 p.m. in the Church, come celebrate with our After-School Music Program participants as they perform on piano and violin for their parents and for you. This final concert for the year will also include choral pieces. Reception follows. All are invited.

 Thank You from J2A
We would like to thank you for all of your help in our rummage sale that took place on April 20. We received countless generous donations of items to sell and much support in our efforts to make the sale a success. On top of that we also received many customers from the parish, which helped us to raise far more money than expected from the sale. This money all goes towards helping fund our pilgrimage next summer, and we are extraordinarily grateful that the parish supports our efforts to learn more about our faith and grow as a youth group. --St. Philip's J2A Youth Group
Thank You from Holaway Elementary School
The following is an excerpt from a letter sent by Chris Gutierrez, the Principal of Holaway Elementary School. "It is with heartfelt gratitude and appreciation that I write this letter. Your contribution of $2300 to the Holaway students is truly amazing. Our schools, our students, and our families will benefit greatly from your contribution. In very difficult times, it is the most courageous and most honorable of those that come to the aid of others. Your parish clearly meets this honorable charge. I am not sure you realize the benefits a gift such as this can provide for a school and its students. The donation helps support students in all aspects of their education; it helps us take care of the families in our community." Outreach's annual Children's Christmas Project raised some $6900 in December of 2012, from 86 contributors. The funds were shared among Holaway and Rio Vista Elementary Schools and Imago Dei Middle School. In Rio Vista and Holaway Schools, more the 90% of the children qualify for federally funded school lunch. Imago Dei, an Episcopal school which provides a quality and loving education entirely from donations, survives through acts of faith from many people and parishes like us. For all three schools, our gifts go, in many cases, to fulfilling the most basic human needs, and in others, making life and the future just a bit better for the children and their families. Read more. ASMP Seeks Program Director The After School Music Program Board is so grateful for Bruce Phillips and his five years of devotion to the program. While we are sad that he is stepping down from this portion of his ministry at St. Philip's, we are also very excited to carry on this important and exciting ministry. We are advertising his position as Program Director. The director needs to be able to work well with children, parents, volunteers, and local schools. This position also requires excellent managerial/administrative skills. It is a part time position. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact Woosug Kang immediately. Join St. Philip's Pantry Team! We need people willing to spend 3 hours one day a week to put together and distribute food bags to those who come to our doors for help making ends meet! No previous experience necessary - we will pair you with an experienced food pantry worker! Please join this very important ministry! To find out more, and/or join, please contact Nancy Atherton or call 269-0699.
Ushers NeededIf you regularly attend the 5:30 p.m. service, please consider serving as an usher once a month. This ministry is important in welcoming worshippers and helping our services run smoothly. We need 2 new ushers to form a team to work one Sunday a month. If you are interested, please contact Bob Stanton or call 578-6254. Thank you!
Hospital Visitor Ministry
If you have ever been in the hospital, you know how reassuring it is to have a visit from your church. Our clergy visits hospitalized parishioners every Tuesday and Thursday, but we have few clergy and many members. We are fortunate that some St. Philip's parishioners volunteer to go to hospitals in their neighborhoods (Northwest, Central or East) to visit hospitalized St. Philippians on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Join this needed and personally fulfilling ministry. To discuss or volunteer, please contact Jim Prescott-Smith or call 577-3779. Also, if you are hospitalized, or are planning a hospital stay, please let the office know! Because of the HIPAA Act of 1996, intended to protect your privacy through limiting what information can be released by hospitals and other institutions, the hospital cannot tell us if you are there. Our Hospital Visitors ministry would love to pay a call on you. Please call the office at 299-6421 between 8:30 and 4:30 Monday through Thursday, and give the information to the receptionist. Contact us even if you think someone else may have let us know -- better to be notified twice than not at all! Also, when you check in, please let them know that you are a St. Philip's parishioner and you authorize priestly calls. You may also ask the hospital chaplain to notify us. Announcing Shared Branching!
Your Episcopal Federal Credit Union has recently joined together in a cooperative effort to bring you more choices in financial convenience, the CU Service Centers®Network. You can now perform many of your financial transactions at other credit unions belonging to the Network. You are able to access your accounts and conduct business with your credit union through any of the convenient CU Service Centers® locations. You need 3 things: 1) The name United Methodist FCU (at this time the Episcopal members must state United Methodist); 2) your account number at your credit union; and 3) a current, unexpired VALID government-issued picture ID with your signature, or U.S. Armed Forces ID or the new Smart ID card without a signature. Click here to find a location near you. For further help contact Janet Kaiser, Member Services Specialist, or call (602) 677-0162.
 Prison Ministry Meeting
The next meeting for St. Philip's Prison Ministry will be held on May 20 at 4 p.m. in LaPaz. We invite you to join this formation process as we explore ways to satisfy the words of Scripture: "I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me." Matthew 25:36. Participation in this planning process need not necessarily mean that one must make a commitment to visiting any prison facilities. Rather, we invite you to share ideas about the best ways to reach out to our brothers and sisters. We have already encountered a wealth of ideas and information from folks eager to share their time and talents. We encourage others to come join us in this important work. Any questions, please contact Don Veitch.
