Adult Formation Update
|
In this week's Adult Formation e-letter, the dates were switched for the 10:15 a.m. forums. Here is the correct lineup: Sunday, April 14, 10:15 a.m.
Faith on Campus: Episcopal Campus Ministry at the University of Arizonawith The Rev. Dr. Lucas Mix and Student Ministers, East Gallery Campus ministry involves a unique blend of community, formation, and evangelism. Come meet the U of A chaplain - Lucas Mix - and several student ministers - who will answer questions about what it means to be a Christian on campus, how they formed their identity as Christians, and reaching out to other students. Spiritual and Mission Formation.A Sampler of Anglican Poetswith the Rev. Poulson Reed, Rector, All Saints' Episcopal Church and Day School, Phoenix, La Paz One of the characteristics of our Anglican tradition is a deep appreciation for language. From the King James Bible to the Book of Common Prayer, Anglicans have found in words windows into the Divine. Not coincidently, our tradition has also given us gifted poets, who explored faith in their writing. Join the Reverend Poulson Reed, rector of All Saints' Episcopal Church and Day School in Phoenix, for a lively presentation on several Anglican poets from the distant and recent past. Spiritual Formation.Border and Immigration Forum:The Tohono O'odham Nation Government and Migrationwith Mike Wilson, Policy Director, Border Action Network , West Gallery According to the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner, in fiscal year 2010 there were 253 known migrant deaths in the Tucson Sector of the Border Patrol. According to the Tohono O'odham Police Department, "Last year in 2010 there were a total of 125 immigrant deaths" on the O'odham nation. What is the cause of these differing statistics? Mr. Mike Wilson, Policy Director of Border Action Network, who has provided water for migrants passing through the Tohono O'odham Nation since 2002, will explore the moral accountability of migrant deaths in the desert. Mr. Wilson was born in the San Xavier District of the Tohono O'odham Reservation. He served more than 20 years in the U.S. Army, mostly as a Special Forces careerist, and was a Military Advisor to the Army of El Salvador from December 1988 to January 1991, during that country's civil war. He was a Presbyterian lay pastor in Sells, capital of the Tohono O'odham Nation, in 2001-2002. Mission Formation.Sunday, April 21, 10:15 a.m.
Vestry Forumwith St. Philip's Vestry Leaders, Murphey Gallery The Vestry and other St. Philip's leaders will have just spent the weekend in a follow-up retreat to the strategic planning process begun in 2012. Be among the first to hear the latest about the ongoing and inspiring work St. Philip's is doing. Mission Formation.

What's Going On |
Candlelight Vigil for Gun Control Today
Please join other Tucsonans to promote the prevention of gun violence! Friday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. at Christina-Taylor Green Memorial River Park, 7649 N. Shannon Road. Special guests include survivors Pam Simon and Lisa Kiser, Gabe Zimmerman's mom Emily Nottingham, and others. This event is part of a continuing effort to pressure Congress to act to reduce gun violence by passing universal background checks. Sponsoring coalition includes Mayors against Illegal Guns, Moms Demand Action, Tucson Community Committee against Gun Violence and Arizonans for Gun Safety. Practicing Civil Discourse in an Uncivil World
The Outreach Commission and Border and Immigration Ministries present "Practicing Civil Discourse in an Uncivil World," on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. till noon in the East Gallery. Have you been tongue-tied in the face of hostile rhetoric? Have you struggled with how to begin a difficult conversation? If you answered "yes" to either of these questions then this workshop is for you! Catherine Tornbom of the Center for Community Dialogue will lead an exploration of tools and techniques to improve our ability to skillfully engage others. The workshop will be experiential in nature, so come prepared to participate - civil discourse is not a spectator sport! Catherine Tornbom is the manager of the Center for Community Dialogue, focused on helping Southern Arizonans have conversations on difficult topics in a respectful and skilled way. She has over 30 years' experience in organization development and alternative dispute resolution. St. Philippian Jane Prescott-Smith, of the National Institute for Civil Discourse, gives Ms. Tornbom high praise, "Catherine is a gifted trainer from whom I have learned a great deal. I am looking forward to the April 13 workshop with anticipation." There is no charge for the workshop but reservations are requested. Contact BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org. Bethlehem Marketplace
The Church School children invite you to experience a bustling market in Jesus' day. This popular interactive event will take place on Sunday, April 14, from 10:15 to about 11:15 a.m., in the plaza, as the children recreate a marketplace in ancient Bethlehem. Markets in ancient Bethlehem were exciting places filled with commotion. Merchants hawked everything from fresh produce to linen cloth to brass lamp stands. Exotic animals such as apes and peacocks were offered, along with sheep and goats for sacrifices. According to Middle Eastern custom, buyer and seller must haggle over the price of every item. Proverbs 20: 14 describes this type of exchange: "It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth." St. Philip's Bethlehem Marketplace will not include apes and peacocks, nor will sacrifices take place, but visitors may savor the aromas of the spice shop and fruit peddler, stop by the bakery for warm bread, taste olives and other fare. Watch the artisans demonstrating their crafts and perhaps participate yourself. Pause for a refreshing cup of water. Be sure to keep out of the way of the Roman Centurions as you linger! The sights, sounds, and smells of ancient Bethlehem will surround you as the colorfully costumed children of St. Philip's lead you back in time. Guest Preacher Sunday
Our guest preacher at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services on Sunday, April 14, will be the Rev. Poulson C. Reed, Rector of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Phoenix. He will also lead a forum on Anglican poetry at 10:15 a.m. in La Paz. Next Sunday, April 21, our Rector will be guest preacher at All Saints'. Poulson Reed was called as rector of All Saints' Episcopal Church and Day School in June of 2009 and began in August of that year. He has a passion for our rich Anglican tradition, deepening our relationship with Christ through the ancient practices of praying, learning, serving, and connecting. He especially loves liturgy for all ages, church music, teaching the faith, and pastoral care. Before coming to All Saints', Father Reed served at Saint John's Cathedral in Denver for more than seven years as a canon, and eventually as Sub-Dean. At Saint John's, he helped found an alternative, seeker-friendly Sunday evening Eucharistic community called "The Wilderness," and worked with the Sudanese community as they became a special congregation of the diocese and a Jubilee ministry. Father Reed graduated from an Episcopal school, St. Christopher's in Richmond, Virginia. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Virginia, and he attended seminary at Yale Divinity School. He is married to Megan Reed, a classically trained tuba player and teacher. They have two boys, David and Thomas. Fuentes Rojas y Bordando por la Paz en San Felipe
Fuentes Rojas (Red Fountains) originated in Mexico City in 2011 to raise visibility for the victims of the US-Mexico Drug War that has resulted in systemic violence in Mexico. To make their voice public, the members of Fuentes Rojas formed Bordando por la Paz (Embroidering for Peace) to create a memorial for every victim of drug war violence. The memorials display information about the victims death in words hand-embroidered with red thread on a man's white handkerchief. The movement has spread around the world to Latin America, Europe, Asia and the US. How can YOU respond with compassion? Join us for a "taller" (workshop) on Sunday, April 14, 1-3 p.m., at the Labyrinth Fountain. Together we'll each embroider, in red thread on a white handkerchief, known details of the victim's death based on police records. Instruction will be provided. We'll discuss plans for future public embroidery events and our participation in the local May Day parade. You are invited into a movement of remembrance and solidarity with our neighbors who struggle each day to survive the US-Mexico Drug War in their communities. For more information and to receive a simple and inexpensive supply list, contact Suzanne at 325-4469 or BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org. St. Philip's Facebook Photo Contest Calling All Shutterbugs! There is still time to enter the St. Philip's photo contest. Win, and your photo will be put on display on the St. Philip's campus. The child (through grade 5), youth (grades 6 to 12) and adult's photos with the most votes will be put on display. Photo submissions are due by April 17. Also, don't forget to vote!

Announcement from the Rector |
It is with conflicting emotions that I inform you that Bruce Phillips has resigned as the administrator of St. Philip's After-School Music Program, effective at the end of the program year in May. The After-School Program participants and leaders will miss Bruce a great deal. The Board will act quickly to fill the role. We are all extremely grateful for the time, energy, and passion he has put into this program since its inception five years ago. As Bruce passes on his responsibilities, this will be an opportunity for new leadership to step up to maintain the vitality of this very important outreach program to the Tucson community. We at St. Philip's are also truly blessed that Bruce will continue his work as Director of Children and Family Ministries. Please watch for further details about plans for summer and fall programs for children and families, and for news about St. Philip's After-School Music Program. Faithfully, John

5:30 Ushers Needed
If you regularly attend the 5:30 p.m. Sunday service, please consider volunteering to serve as an usher once a month. This is an important ministry in welcoming worshippers and helping our services run smoothly. We have a shortage of 5:30 ushers and need 2 new ones to form a team to work one Sunday a month. If you are interested, please contact Bob Stanton or call 578-6254. Thank you!

Click here to find a location near you. For further help contact Janet Kaiser, Member Services Specialist, or call (602) 677-0162. Prison Ministry MeetingThe next meeting for St. Philip's Prison Ministry will be held on May 20 at 4 p.m. in LaPaz. We invite you to join this formation process as we explore ways to satisfy the words of Scripture: "I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me." Matthew 25:36. Participation in this planning process need not necessarily mean that one must make a commitment to visiting any prison facilities. Rather, we invite you to share ideas about the best ways to reach out to our brothers and sisters. We have already encountered a wealth of ideas and information from folks eager to share their time and talents. We encourage others to come join us in this important work. Any questions, please contact Don Veitch. Tacheria Interfaith School of Spiritual Direction
