Ministry E-Letters

Greetings!

Epiphany is a season of great joy for all Christians as we celebrate the gift of God's Word made flesh. In the darkness of winter, we are illumined by the light of Christ in our lives. We seek to share this light as we do God's work in the world.

Epiphany is a season filled with possibilities as you deepen your journey with God. We invite you to explore the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Nominations from the floor will be accepted at Part I of the Annual Meeting (January 20). In order to be nominated, the nominee must be a Pledger of Record for 12 consecutive months, communicant in good standing (attends worship and communion at least 3 times a year), and an active participant in ministries of the parish; must have previously agreed to serve, if elected; and must bring 150 copies of a one-sheet biography with picture. There will be no nominations from the floor during Part II of the Annual Meeting (January 27).

Nominee for Jr. Warden Nominees for Vestry (three-year terms) include Sharla Darby, Sarah Schwennesen, and Alex Sugiyama. The nominee for Junior Warden (one-year term) is Doug Burke.

Vestry nominees

Nominees' bios were mailed in the December "Good News" publication and are available here.

The Constitution & Canons of the Episcopal Church provide that decisions are made by vote of the Vestry, who represent the parishioners who elect them. Therefore it is important to be informed about your representatives and to attend the annual meeting and vote.

Embroidering for Peace at St. Philip's
embroidered handkerchief Violence related to the US-Mexico Drug War has caused the deaths of more than 80,000 people in Mexico. Many were innocent bystanders of random or targeted violence. Some were friends or relatives of people in drug cartels. All were children of God, worthy to be mourned and remembered. Fuentes Rojas (Red Fountains) originated in Mexico City in 2011 to raise visibility for these victims. They formed Bordando por la Paz (Embroidering for Peace) to create a memorial for each victim, which displays information about the victim's death in words hand-embroidered with red thread on a man's white handkerchief. The movement has spread around the world. The first 3,000 memorials became a public art installation, "Embroidering for Peace and Memory: One Victim-One Handkerchief," in Mexico City. They will also be shown in Paris and will be used in public installations and events at various locations.

How can YOU respond with compassion?

Join us for a taller (workshop) on Sunday, January 20, 1-3 p.m., at St. Philip's Labyrinth. Together we'll embroider, in red thread on white handkerchiefs, known details of each victim's death based on police records. We will discuss plans for an ongoing Taller Abierto de Bordando por la Paz en San Felipe to meet regularly and publicly to embroider memorial handkerchiefs and we'll strategize to form a local community of bordadoras. Men, women, and children are welcome. Supplies and instruction will be provided. Refreshments will be served. You are invited into a movement of remembrance and solidarity with our neighbors who struggle each day to survive the US-Mexico Drug War in their neighborhoods, villages, towns and cities. Reservations are requested for this inaugural / planning event. For more information and to reserve your space and supplies, contact Suzanne, 325-4469 or BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org.

ash cross Ashes To Go
What would it be like to meet people in a moment of prayer on the street corner, the coffee shop, or some other ordinary place? What would it be like for you to come out from the pews and church doors to the places where the "rubber meets the road?"  What would it be like to invite others to wear ashes, claim repentance, grace and deep relationship with God for all the challenges of daily life? With the St. Philip's "Ashes To Go" team, we can bring spirit, belief, and belonging into places we go every day.  Would you like to be part of this simple afternoon event with deep meaning?  A team of ministers is now forming.  We will meet twice before Ash Wednesday to prepare.  Please contact the Rev. Vicki K. Hesse by January 31 or call 299-6421. For more information, please visit the Ashes To Go web site.

Iona A Pilgrimage to our Spiritual Past
Join an inspiring journey of faith and spiritual renewal in a Pilgrimage for Adults to Scotland and Northern England, led by The Rev. Greg Foraker in the summer of 2013. This journey will explore the Celtic roots of the Episcopal Church beginning in Scotland. We will travel across the rolling hills of Northumberland to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, founded by St. Aiden. After spacious time at Lindisfarne, we will travel across Scotland to the Inner Hebridean Islands and discover Iona, the monastery founded by St. Columba in the 6th Century. Iona is a true "thin space" where, through the ages, pilgrims have sensed the nearness of the holy. Throughout this journey you will be invited into a spaciousness of reflection, prayer and liturgy that will draw from the depths of our spiritual tradition. These prayerful offerings support the inner work this journey will invite. Informational meetings for this trip will be on Thursday, January 24 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, February 3, at 10:15 a.m. in La Paz. Meetings are the same; plan to attend one. For more information please email the Rev. Greg Foraker or call 299-6421.
