Ministry E-Letters

Greetings!

Advent Advent is often described as a season of waiting. Advent waiting is not passive, because this is a time of year pregnant with anticipation! Something new is about to be born in our midst. We invite you to explore the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's. May this season of waiting be a time of enrichment and inspiration for you.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

On Everyone's Mind

Gracious and merciful God, your beloved son took little children into his arms and blessed them; give us grace, we entreat you, to entrust the children killed in Newtown, Connecticut, to your never-failing care and love, and bring us all to your loving presence, through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The sermon preached by the Rev. Dr. Lucas Mix on Sunday, December 16, is posted on St. Philip's web site.

Special Community Conversation: Sharing and Reflection in a Time of Tragedy
In light of the tragedy in Newtown, CT, on December 14, many of us are seeking: seeking comfort, seeking community, seeking a way to make sense of it all, especially as we prepare for Christmas this year. On Sunday, December 23, at 10:15 a.m. in the Murphey Gallery, join our Rector, the Rev. Canon John Kitagawa, for an important time of prayer, sharing, and reflection following this tragic event. Faith in God does not protect anyone from bad things happening to them, their communities or families; and faith does not shield us from the impact of horrendous events in our lives, our communities or families.  Faith can give us the courage and strength to work through the most difficult situations and times. If you or someone you know is feeling frightened and vulnerable at this time, come to this forum to share in Christ's community of faith and open yourself to the love of God in Christ Jesus. Come and nourish your faith so you can be a helping hand, or an encouraging voice.

Program for Children: Searching for Light in the Darkness
As confusing and horrifying as it is for us, as adults, to watch the sensationalized news coverage of last Friday's tragedy in Connecticut, it is even more so for our children.  Addressing a child's questions and fears is critical, but often difficult. The Children's Ministries is beginning a project called "Searching for Light in the Darkness." We will write letters of sympathy and support to surviving Sandy Hook students; post questions, fears, thanks, and suggested acts of healing on one of two boards in the hallway near the entrance to the Children's Courtyard; and hold open discussions for parents and children on Sundays at 11:15 a.m. in Room 10.

memorial to shooting victims Special Evening Prayer Service January 8, 2013
Some days grab our hearts and won't let go. On January 8, 2013, the two-year anniversary of the shootings in Tucson in which six were killed and fourteen others injured, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, St. Philip's will host a special Evening Prayer service at 7 p.m. in the Church. We set aside time to focus on community building and healing framed in the context of the tragic events of January 8, 2011, and expanding to embrace all who are shocked and saddened by inexplicable violence including the recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. The service offers periods for quiet reflection and celebration of the good parts of our lives together. The liturgy calls us to a responsive ministry of mutual support and comfort for each other. Pam Simon, an outreach coordinator for Congresswoman Giffords who was injured in the shootings, will be the homilist. Music will be composed and led by Sheldon Curry, St. Philip's Composer-in-Residence, and will feature other parish musicians. You are invited to be surprised by scripture, moved by ancient and newly composed music, and comforted by community. Join us to laugh, cry, think, sing, and pray.
What's Going On

Greening of the Church Greening: Friendship, Food, Festivity, and Flutes
On December 22, we will hold our annual Greening of the Church. Since it's a Saturday, work will begin at 10:30 a.m., with lunch provided by the Parish Life Ministry (please bring a dessert to share). The Tucson Flute Club will provide festive music while parishioners decorate the Church. The Higby family is coordinating the decorating.

Also on Saturday: J2A Gift Wrapping
The J2A Youth will host a gift-wrapping fundraiser along with a bake sale on Saturday, December 22, during the Greening of the Church starting at 10:30 a.m. Remove one item from your holiday to-do list while you help support the youth as they raise money for their pilgrimage. Bring gifts that need wrapping to the Greening of the Church and buy some baked goods for your holiday celebrations!

labyrinth bricks Looking for a Special Christmas Gift?
Consider placing a brick in the St. Philip's labyrinth! To date, more than 300 engraved bricks have been installed. Bricks from orders 3 and 4 have arrived, and will be in place shortly. Your brick might celebrate an important event, or recognize a person who is dear to you. Brick order forms are available in the office, and on St. Philip's web site.

You Can Still Donate to Children's Christmas Project
Thank you to those who have donated to the Children's Christmas Project! Donated funds are shared with the three schools with which St. Philip's has an association: Imago Dei, Rio Vista, and Holaway. Volunteers will be collecting cash, checks and credit card contributions through Sunday, December 23. For information please contact Peg Anderson at 575-8929 or Nancy Atherton at 269-0699. Read stories about how this project helps on "Good News from St. Philip's."

Advent Meditations Available Online
The Advent season brings the opportunity for all of us to reflect upon, prepare ourselves for, and anticipate the celebration of Christmas joy. As a very special gift, members and friends of our parish community share their spiritual reflections in St. Philip's Advent Meditations Booklet. This year the meditations focus on the inspirational music that surrounds us at this special time. They are accompanied by a link so that you may hear the music while you read the contributor's thoughts.

Parish Census & Home Visits

Receipt of your parish census card is very important to St. Philip's. We are making a special effort this year to verify and update our parish membership records. We are concerned that a number of parishioners may have moved away or changed addresses. And we are missing a lot of e-mail addresses, resulting in parishioners not receiving parish newsletters. As mentioned in the 2 December Sunday bulletin, our 2013 Annual Response & Parish Census Core Team volunteers have begun making personal visits to the homes of parishioners who have NOT as yet returned their census and pledge cards. We will attempt to visit every home we have not heard from throughout December and January, until we have contacted all registered members of St. Philip's to verify membership and contact information. Please help us by filling out your census and pledge cards and returning them to St. Philip's as soon as possible. To date we have heard from about 400 parishioner families and still have 600 to contact. Forms are available on the Stewardship page of St. Philip's web site. While you are on our web site, please take a few minutes to watch our narrated slide show "The Work of St. Philip's Ministries." Printouts of the cards are also available in the parish office. Thank you in advance!

Services: Christmas Eve, Christmas, Epiphany

Christmas Eve and Christmas Services
St. Philip's offers five services on Christmas Eve, as well as a service on Christmas Day.

Kids at Great Doors

Live Nativity The 4 p.m. Children's Service on Christmas Eve is a communion service especially designed for toddlers and preschoolers and their families. Music will feature organ, trumpet, and the Choir Chimes. Remember to bring Baby Jesus from your home crèche (Nativity Set) to be blessed! The service is followed by a live Nativity scene in the church plaza, reenacted by children and a young family from St. Philip's, complete with children costumed as animals that were, and perhaps weren't, present at the original Nativity.

At 5:20 p.m., music begins, which leads into an All-Generations Eucharist at 5:30 p.m. This is a Holy Eucharist service for school-aged children and their families. Music is provided by the St.  Nicholas Choir, with trumpet, handbells, and organ, as well as congregational carol singing. The Chalice Players, a group of youth, will dramatize the Christmas story.

The 7 p.m. Candlelit Eucharist with Carols is preceded by music beginning at 6:50. This quiet, reflective Choral Eucharist service includes Benjamin Britten's Missa Brevis, led by the Schola Cantorum, with harp, as well as trumpet and organ, and congregational carol singing.

Acolyte Censing The 9 and 11 p.m. Festival Eucharist services begin with music 10 minutes before the hour. The service music is Franz Schubert's Mass in G Major, D. 167, scored for choir, soloists, chamber orchestra, and organ. There will also be handbells and popular carols for congregational singing. The 11 p.m. service includes incense.

On Christmas Day, congregational carol singing preceding the 11 a.m. service begins at 10:50, followed by the Feast of the Nativity, which is a Holy Eucharist Rite II service with choir and well-loved congregational carols.

Priests

If you attend on Christmas Eve, remember that you may be waiting in line outdoors and dress accordingly. You may wish to consider attending the less crowded services, at 4, 5:30, or 11 p.m. or on Christmas Day. We welcome everyone seeking to celebrate the birth of Jesus by worshipping with us. Although there will be security on site, it is advisable not to leave belongings in vehicles.

Special Plans for Epiphany
Epiphany January 6 falls on a Sunday in 2013, and we will celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany all day. The 9 and 11:15 a.m. services will feature First Sunday Instrumental Music, provided by the Paloma Winds. This wind quintet consists of Deena Reedy, flute; Sara Fraker, oboe; Andrew Braden, clarinet; Rebecca Cain, bassoon; and Victor Valenzuela, horn. All are well known in Tucson as orchestral performers, chamber musicians, and teachers.

At 5:30 p.m., we will celebrate gift and light as we savor unexpected settings of ancient and modern music composed and led by Sheldon Curry, St. Philip's composer-in-residence. We will worship together with a liturgy woven from our Prayer Book, Enriching our Worship, and Wild Goose's Wee Worship Book. If you are interested in serving as a reader or chalicist for this service, please contact Angela Wakeham, LLM Coordinator.

The 5:30 p.m. service will be followed by a festive potluck and Epiphany party, including a pinata. Please watch for more details!

The day will also include a 7:45 a.m. Holy Eucharist Rite I and a 4 p.m. "Come and See" service as usual.

Food for Thought

dollar sign Bishop Returns Money to Parishes
Bishop Smith has announced plans to return to each parish a portion of the assessment paid to the Diocese. His restrictions are that the money must be used to strengthen outreach to the community through new endeavors in either evangelism or social justice. The Vestry is entertaining proposals for the use of such funds. Guidelines for these proposals are posted on St. Philip's web site, or click here for an RFP. Proposals are due January 15, 2013.

Win! Win! Tax Credits
Don't forget to take advantage of the State Tax Credit by contributing to a public and/or private school. You can do both! Public school donations must be made before December 31, and private school donations can be made until April 1,5 2013. The Outreach Commission recommends Imago Dei Episcopal School and one or more of the public low-income schools listed in our flier, which is available in the office and on the Outreach page of St. Philip's web site (scroll down to "School Tax Credit"). This is a WIN-WIN situation as you get the full amount of your contribution back when you pay your Arizona state income tax. For more information call Peg Anderson, 575-8929.

Bishop Smith is asking Episcopalians throughout Arizona to support our Episcopal schools through tax credit giving. Imago Dei Middle School needs your help to provide scholarships to children who are economically disadvantaged. If you owe Arizona state income tax, this year you can give up to $1,003 as a single filer and up to $2,006 as joint filer to a private school. All tax credit contributions must be given through a School Tuition Organization, such as the Arizona Episcopal Schools Foundation.

JustFaith logo In the Renouf/Nelson Library
The Renouf/Nelson Library has available for checkout the books used in the JustFaith program. These books, written by some of the nation's most well-known theologians and social justice leaders, present in unequivocal yet highly readable terms the Gospel call for Christians to become involved in the care of our brothers and sisters living at the margins of society. Thanks to the Outreach Commission and the Border and Immigration Ministry for their generous support of Just Faith, which made this gift to the library possible.

Doing Justice: Congregations and Community Organizing, Dennis A. Jacobsen, pub. Fortress Press. "Doing Justice is an introductory theology of congregation-based community organizing rooted in the day-to-day struggle and hopes of urban ministry...[This book] weaves the theology and biblical warrants for community organizing into concrete strategies for achieving justice in the public arena."

Did You Know from Border & Immigration Ministry
BIM logo Did you know that according to  the Immigration Policy Center's 2010 publication, Giving Facts A Fighting Chance: Walls, raids, and billions of dollars spent at the border aren't stopping unauthorized immigration. The annual budget of the U.S. Border Patrol has increased nine-fold, and the number of Border Patrol agents stationed along the southwest border has grown nearly five-fold, since Fiscal Year (FY) 1992. But the unauthorized population of the United States has tripled in size, from roughly 3.5 million in 1990 to 11 million today.
