Greetings! |
We are in the midst of a special "Season of Welcome" at St. Philip's, during which we are practicing extending radical hospitality to everyone -- guests, new members, and long-term St. Philippians. We invite you to join with us as we strive to be a welcoming and engaging community that equips and inspires us to serve the needs of the world. If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe. We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community! |
Stewardship
|
Your stewardship pledge supports the work of our ministries!
As you prayerfully consider your stewardship pledge for 2013, please take the time to review the highlights of the work of our ministries by clicking here. This narrated set of slides summarizes the reports of our Worship, Pastoral Care, Education, Outreach and Evangelism Commissions as presented during the 2012 Annual Report to the parish in January.
Stewardship Thought This morning, I typed, "Stewardship can be difined as... " I backspaced to correct my error, but the thought occurred that maybe I was really trying to write "divined."
As a lad in grade school, I did poorly in arithmetic. That followed me into high school and an algebra class. There was one formula that even I could understand: a = b, or y = z as long as the values of the two sides were equivalent. It could even be E = I, as in Expenses = Income; or the reverse: Income = Expenses. If not the same, the ink turns red.
As an adjective, the word "divine" appears frequently in our worship. As a verb, it has different meanings such as to guess, to conjecture, to estimate. These are not desirable traits to use in constructing a budget; however, that is the challenge of the Finance Committee when "I" ( pledged income) does not equal "E" (expenses). What does this have to with Stewardship?
No one doubts that St. Philippians are generous in time, talent, and money contributed to the ministry of this church. If we volunteer to be an usher, or a hospital visitor, that pledge is honored in doing what we say we will do. The conclusion is obvious. The money that we contribute also has to be stated, pledged, so that I = E is a reality. Please be a good steward in all respects.
-- Wayne Fulton
Stewardship Campaign Update The fall Stewardship campaign is underway. If you have not yet returned your Annual Response form and Parish Census, we encourage you to do so promptly. Materials are available in the office and on St. Philip's web site.
As of Wednesday, October 31, we have received 227 pledges for a total of $533,979. We are most grateful for this tangible expression of your commitment to growing in faith and participation at St. Philip's.

What's Going On |
 Library Used Book Sale
Book lovers, the wait is over! The annual Renouf/Nelson Library used book sale takes place Saturday and Sunday, November 3rd and 4th, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. each day, in the Murphey Gallery. The sale offers a huge selection of gently used books, including recent best sellers, mysteries, cook books, biographies, history, travel and children's favorites. Individual books are not priced, but a good will offering is requested; buyers can fill a sack with books for a reasonable price. Proceeds go to support the Renouf/Nelson Library.
Class and Lunch for Guests and Newcomers The series of introductory classes for guests/newcomers wraps up this Sunday, November 4, at 10:15 a.m. in the Renouf/Nelson Library. This series is designed to provide a glimpse into life and ministry at St. Philip's. At 12:30 this coming Sunday, newcomers and guests are invited to join parish leaders and staff in the East Gallery for a luncheon. Come meet other newcomers and feel more at home at St. Philip's. For more information contact Roger Rainbolt at (815) 953-9039.
First Sunday Music and Food Drive In celebration of the Feast of All Saints, the St. Philip's Singers, the Canterbury Choir, and Canterbury Apprentices, with chamber orchestra and organ, will present the Requiem, opus 9, by Maurice Duruflé, at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. This requiem is known as one of the most sublime and haungtingly beautiful settings of the requiem texts, with strong ties to Gregorian chants infused in the music. The focus is on the idea of hope and comfort of the feast day rather than the darker atmosphere often portrayed with these texts. With its rich orchestration and lush harmonic language, it has become one of the best loved settings of the Requiem.
In conjunction with First Sunday Music, St. Philip's sponsors a first Sunday "Food for Hunger" food drive. Attendees are invited to bring offerings of nonperishable food in unbreakable containers. Food may be placed outside the entrance to the Church. Food offerings are shared between St. Philip's food pantry and the food pantry at Interfaith Community Services.
Help for Those Affected by Superstorm SandyMany of you have asked what you can do to help those affected by Superstorm Sandy. We recommend contributing to relief efforts through Episcopal Relief and Development -- a highly rated and efficient organization. Episcopal Relief and Development will stand with its local partners in the Caribbean and United States as they assess needs and develop response strategies. Donations to the Hurricane Sandy Response Fund can be made online by clicking here. On Sunday you will find contribution forms in the back of the Church, which may be mailed to ERD. |

Convention Summary: Realizing God's Dream
 | The Most Rev. Frank Griswold with Bishop Smith |
The Rev. Vicki Hesse summarized her experiences at Convention in October. "At October's 52nd Annual Arizona Diocesan Convention, the Rt. Rev. Kirk Stevan Smith, Bishop of Arizona, and staff provoked dreamy metaphors that inspired us to dream as God dreams. How and what does God dream for us? At the convention, we attended workshops, business meetings, and presentations designed to wake us up spiritually, through scripture, and directed toward stewardship." Read more.
