Ministry E-Letters

Greetings!

welcome We are in the midst of a special "Season of Welcome" at St. Philip's, during which we are practicing extending radical hospitality to everyone -- guests, new members, and long-term St. Philippians. All are welcome here!

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Message from the Rector

Last Sunday, October 14, I had the privilege of kicking off St. Philip's 2013 Stewardship Season. This year the theme is "Growing in Faith and Participation." Over the next 5 weeks, deacons and priests will shape their preaching in relationship to this Stewardship theme. Lay members of the congregation will also offer their witnesses to the ways St. Philip's has been a community in which they have been able to grow in faith and participation.  Through this tapestry of diverse threads and stories, I believe you will gain a deep appreciation for the many ways we, as a community of gifted individuals, make such a positive difference in the lives of St. Philippians and in the greater Tucson area.

Thank you for listening and for reflecting on what you hear.

Faithfully, The Rev. John E. Kitagawa, D.Min., Rector

Stewardship Campaign Update
The fall Stewardship campaign is underway. If you have not yet returned your Annual Response and Parish Census forms, we encourage you to do so on or before Sunday, October 21, to reduce the workload of our 2013 Annual Response Core Team members in contacting parishioners one-on-one. One-on-one contacts begin October 23. Materials are available in the office and on St. Philip's web site.

As of Wednesday, October 17, we have received 101 pledges for a total of $215,434. We are most grateful for this tangible expression of your commitment to growing in faith and participation at St. Philip's.

Place Your Labyrinth Brick Orders
labyrinth bricks More than 250 engraved commemorative bricks have been lovingly placed in the labyrinth, and now that the weather is cooler, members of the labyrinth committee are ready to install more bricks. In order to meet our next goal of having new bricks installed by Thanksgiving, members of the committee will be in the Perry Garden on October 21 and 28 to take new orders. You can also order bricks at any time by obtaining an order form at the Church office, on the 75th Anniversary page of St. Philip's web site, or by contacting Nina Bell Allen-Langley or 797-6577.

The next full moon labyrinth walk will be Monday, October 29, at 7 p.m., followed by soup, cookies, and fellowship. About 25 people participated in the first moonlight walk on September 29. Come enjoy this meditative, fun, and inspiring experience!

ofrenda

Bring Items for Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda
El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a time to remember and honor the deceased and is usually characterized by ofrendas, which are shrines or altars constructed to present offerings to the spirits. Starting on October 22, you are invited to remember your departed loved ones by contributing to an ofrenda, which will be set up in the Columbarium until November 2. Photographs, meaningful objects, and memorabilia are all suitable offerings. Contact Stella Lopez at 299-6421, ext. 30, if you would like to contribute an object or have any questions.

A short organizational meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 23, at 11 a.m. in the Perry Garden. Please come!

Cabaret! Cabaret!

The ever-popular Friends of Music fundraising event returns on Friday, October 26, for its 15th year. Presented by the adult choirs and soloists at St. Philip's, the show features solos and ensemble numbers by St. Philip's talented vocalists, many of whom are well known professionals in the Tucson community, with the piano stylings of Mary Baker, Bonnie Bird, Jeffrey Campbell, and St. Philip's new Music Director, Woosug Kang. The pop and Broadway music allows choir members to "let down their hair" and show a side of them that is not normally seen on Sunday mornings. Participants are alluding to something innovative that they are "sworn to secrecy" about. It is difficult to know who enjoys Cabaret more - the attendees or the performers!  The evening should be magical!

cabaret number Note that this year tickets are needed for Cabaret: $30 for one seat and $55 for two seats. Tickets may be reserved by calling  520-299-6421 ext. 32 or e-mailing  friendsofmusic@stphilipstucson.org. They can be picked up at the door on Friday the 26th.

The evening begins at 6:15 p.m. with an outdoor "spread" of hors d'oeuvres and libations. The show begins at 7:00 in the Bloom Music Center. Come early so you don't miss any of the fun!

TImothy Dombek Guests Sunday morning
Our guest preacher next Sunday will be the Rev. Timothy Dombek, Canon to the Ordinary, Diocese of Arizona. Timothy has been very helpful to this parish. He runs Stewardship University, affectionately called "Stew U." Several of our ordained and lay leadership have attended and benefited from his teaching. More recently, Timothy has led parish leadership through a strategic planning process, which is helping us to be more focused and intentional about Growing in Faith and Participation. Next Sunday, Timothy's sermon (7:45, 9, and 11:15 a.m. services) will lift up ideas about radical Christian hospitality. He will also lead a Forum at 10:15 a.m. about how we can use techniques pioneered by Starbucks to be more invitational towards our newcomers and guests. Please join me in welcoming my good friend.  --John

Dorothy Papadakos

Dorothy Papadakos will be our guest organist next Sunday October 28, at the 9 a.m. service and at the beginning of the 11:15. Dorothy was our guest clinician and organist for a choral festival held in 2003. Please join us in welcoming her back to St. Philip's. She will be in town for "something completely different" -- a showing of the silent film "The Phantom of the Opera," for which she will improvise organ music. This event will be Saturday, October 27, at 7 p.m. at Catalina United Methodist Church. For information and tickets, contact www.tucsonphantom.eventbrite.com.

Wine Study and Bible Tasting

Is this a misprint? No! Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine. Join us on Sunday, October 28, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., to learn a little about wine (made the traditional way) and sample God's Word. We'll study a bit about wine with a wine expert (sommelier) and sample scripture with a Bible scholar as we sip. Participants are asked to bring a bottle of wine (or non-alcoholic beverage) or snacks to share. Gather with friends known and new for fellowship and sharing scripture and wine! Limited space available. Hosted by John and Brigid Waszczak. Please RSVP by email or at 577-7792. Directions will be provided when you RSVP.
