CIGNA VACCINE DENIALS
Since January 1, when the new state vaccine mandate went into effect, several practices were denied vaccine reimbursement by CIGNA:
- Denials of HPV vaccine and Rotateq - CIGNA claimed that these vaccines are not covered by the state mandate.
- Denials during the month of January - CIGNA claimed that they were not under obligation to reimburse for vaccines during this month. In fact, January was understood to be part of a "grace period" agreed to by CIGNA and other health insurance companies.
- Denials for vaccines for patients over 19 - CIGNA claimed that the state does not provide vaccines for patients over 19.
CTAAP contacted CIGNA to attempt to resolve these problems. CIGNA determined that the problem originated with an IT issue and that they have corrected it. They plan to pull the histories of all Connecticut vaccine providers to make sure that they have been paid correctly and they will not require practices to reprocess any claims.
If you experience any other unusual denials or payments that don't seem right with any insurance company, please contact the CTAAP office.

Dental Grant The CT Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and our Foundation for Children received second year funding for a special grant from Dentaquest. The multi-state project entitled "Engaging Medical Clinicians in Oral Health" will develop, implement and evaluate an in-depth oral health training program for physicians in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The goal of this program is to more effectively engage physicians in oral health care and fluoride varnish application.
The role of the pediatrician's office in oral health has demonstrated promising results for decreasing the occurrence of early childhood tooth decay. This is particularly important for children on Medicaid who tend to be at high risk for developing cavities.

The CTAAP is happy to announce that the majority of the CME and CEU certificates for the 2012 Teleconference Series have been finished and sent out. If you paid for a teleconference and filled out an evaluation you should have received or will be receiving your certificate in the mail. Due to the large number of topics we covered last year and the number of participants, we took a little extra time getting the certificated processed and out to you. A special thanks to our new staff member Kathryn Senk for getting the job done!!!
