An Important Announcement from the Town of Hillsdale
Town of Hillsdale Sidewalk Update
Sorry for yet another announcement this month. If you're reading this, chances are you know about the Town's upcoming sidewalk project. What you may not know is that there are a few ways to weigh-in on this important project - so take notice and mark your calendar. Let your voice be heard.
Walkabout on Saturday, August 15

17 people walked along Hillsdale's existing sidewalks on Saturday to discuss the next generation of sidewalks - sidewalks that will be part of Hillsdale for the next few generations. Another "walkabout" is set for next Saturday, August 15 at 9 am. This will be a terrific opportunity to learn more about the project and to provide feedback. If you want to participate, meet at the Town Hall parking lot. The walk is sponsored by the Hamlet Committee and Historic Hillsdale - everyone is invited.

Informational Meeting on Tuesday, August 18

Ultimately, the Town Board will have the responsibility to select final materials and approve the overall sidewalk design. According to the Board, this will be based on a number of factors: citizen input, the PPS Plan, budget requirements, and a few unresolved issues including Right-of-Way.

For this reason, the Town has scheduled a second sidewalk informational meeting on Tuesday, August 18, at 6:30 pm - prior to the regularly scheduled Town Board meeting. This will be the last opportunity for citizens to tell the Board what they think before the plan is submitted to the Department of Transportation (DOT) for final approval.

Email Your Recommendations

The Town Board has been working with GPI Engineering to get the project to this important phase. Much of GPI's work has involved collaborating with the sidewalk committee and the DOT. The result is a design that reflects the Town's original needs and is aligned with federal and state regulations. That said, it's not quite final. GPI has been asked by the Town to compile final recommendations from citizens. The issues:
  • Sidewalk material
  • Buffer material (a two-foot strip between the curb and sidewalk)
  • Location of new crosswalks
  • Eventual location of benches, bike racks, garbage containers, and other amenities
Send your recommendations and questions to the sidewalk project manager at GPI: Ed Snyder, at esnyder@gpinet.com. Alternatively, you can email the Town Board at hillsdaleny@gmail.com.
