The goal of this newsletter, issued by the Town of Hillsdale, is to share a bit of local color and the long list of the many cool things that are happening here.

HILLSDALE NEWSLETTER
AUGUST 2015

The Hillsdale Newsletter provides one of the most comprehensive listings of events and happenings in the Roe Jan community.

HISTORIC PHOTOGRAPH DONATED
One Hundred Years Ago

This early photo was generously donated to the Roeliff Jansen Historical Society earlier this year by the late Ruth Miles of Mt. Washington, Massachusetts. The collection is largely comprised of photographs of the family of Henry David Harvey (1851-1928), the founder of The Hillsdale Harbinger, and his descendants.  Some of the photos were taken by Harvey himself, who was an accomplished photographer, though in this case, the photographer is unidentified. The photograph was taken in the early twentieth century before the monument was constructed in 1916. It shows the familiar Hillsdale General Store, left, and the Hillsdale House, far right. The buildings in between vanished long ago and have been replaced with the Village Scoop and the home of Passiflora. If you happen to have early photographs of our community, please share them with us!

WELCOME TO HILLSDALE
Two New Businesses

Earlier this summer, LABspace moved to the Hillsdale General Store building below CrossRoads Food Shop from a former location in Great Barrington. The gallery is dedicated to experiments in curation, exhibiting category-busting and/or materially surprising contemporary art, and hosting performance art, screenings, readings and music that push the boundaries of categorization, participation and/or experience. Currently on view is sculpture by Michelle Segre and paintings by Erica Svec. Opening on August 15 with an artist reception from 12-2 is a group show called Exquisite for which 3 artists collaborated on each piece. It runs through September 19.

Brown & Jackson, a Brooklyn-based design consultancy specializing in interiors, environments and events for clients and self-initiated projects, has opened a satellite office in Hillsdale, also on the lower level of the Hillsdale General Store.

FOR THE DOGS
Youth at Work

Amy Hilliard and Hillsdale's Summer Youth Program organized a special program to bring some joy to the doggies who live at the Columbia Greene Humane Society. Working with local volunteers, they collected used clothes, cut them into strips, and then braided them into whimsical dog toys. By all accounts, the dogs were very pleased with the toys and want to be adopted very soon by so they can play in the Roe Jan Park's wonderful dog run.
