ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

A group of RJHS members - Julia Brandi, Donna Peck, Marilyn Herrington, Steve Irving, and Peter Cipkowski - are on a mission to capture the oral histories of folks who have lived here for a very long time. The team has already captured 10 hours of film - and that's just the beginning. The idea is simple: create a series of short videos that cover different themes - farming, the railroad, community life before World War II, and so on - and thread together snippets of on-camera reminiscences with historic photographs and contemporary views.

Edna and Sam Dawson, shown here on May 31, 2015, the day before their 68th wedding anniversary, are among those interviewed. If you'd like to support this important project, want to loan historic photos or artifacts, or simply want to nominate someone to be interviewed, please contact us at roeliffjansenhs@gmail.com.

COPAKE HILLSDALE FARMERS MARKET OPEN FOR SUMMER

The word is out. Every Saturday, our local farmers market overflows with fresh local produce and lots of other local products. Many shoppers were surprised that even the first day of the market (May 23) offered so much bounty - and had so many shoppers! It's no wonder. The market is conveniently located in the stunningly beautiful Roe Jan Park on Route 22 just south of the Hillsdale light. It's open 9 am to 1 pm every Saturday.

FRIENDS BOOK SHOP OPEN FOR SUMMER

The Friends Book Shop, downstairs at the Roe Jan Library, is now open every Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. Top-quality used books, CDs and DVDs on all subjects are available at bargain prices with all proceeds going to support the library. The shop is in the lower level of the Roe Jan Community Library, located on Route 22, a mile south of the Hillsdale light. For more information, call the library at 518-325-4101 or visit friends-roejanlibrary.org.

SUMMER EXHIBIT OPEN AT COPAKE IRON WORKS

The Friends of Taconic State Park are pleased to announce a new Copake Iron Works Museum Exhibit is open through the summer every Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 4 pm. The museum is tucked inside one of the historic Iron Works buildings at 33 Valley View Road, Copake Falls. The exhibit will run through September 6.

LIBRARY GALA

There's still time to organize your tickets and attend "A Party in the Park," the Roeliff Jansen Community Library Gala, to be held on Saturday June 13 from 5 to 7:30 pm. This year's event will pay tribute to our very own Sally Laing who for over 20 years has contributed greatly to the Library. More about Sally and the gala on the library website.

REQUEST FOR BIDS

The Town of Hillsdale is requesting bids for the repair of the block garage located on Old Town Road. Repair will require removal and replacement of all of the plywood roof deck. The rotted roof joists at the left side of the building require replacement. Other deteriorated roof joists may require replacement after the deck is removed. More here.

RJHS
SUMMER EXHIBIT PLANNED AT RJHS MUSEUM

The Roeliff Jansen Historical Society is excited to open its summer exhibit on July 4th weekend. This year's exhibit tells the story of our region's many camps. Mud sliding, a plane dropping leaflets to open a camp's end of season "Color Wars," a 14-year-old pitcher strikes out a visiting Lou Gehrig, a polio epidemic, the controversial arrest and handcuffing of a popular camp owner, kids finding "lost" caves, folksinger Theodor Bickel entertaining campers - these are some of the stories that will be featured. Read more.

SIGN THIEF

Hillsdale Highway Superintendent Richard Briggs reports that road signs are disappearing around town. Their removal, says the Superintendent, "puts residents and drivers in danger. It also makes the Emergency Services jobs a lot more difficult in finding locations." Signs cost taxpayers $60 or more, depending on the sign. If anyone knows anything about the missing signs, please contact the Sheriff's office at 518-828-3344.

INTERACTIVE MAPPER

Now through July, share the views you love most in an interactive, online map. The Columbia Land Conservancy and the Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program are offering an online "Mapper" where anyone may add scenic views.   These views could be of any publicly accessible part of the County - rolling hills, active farms, winding streams, historic hamlets - whatever views you most enjoy.  To add views or see those that have been added, visit the Mapper

The goal of this newsletter, issued by Hillsdale's Town Board, is to share a bit of local news and the long list of the many cool things that are happening in the Roe Jan community.  If you want to promote your upcoming event, email the details. Pictures and jpgs welcome. No pdfs, please.
