GREAT! GRAND! GLORIOUS!
Join the Town of Hillsdale and the National Park Service for a brief ceremony on April 9 at 3 pm at Hillsdale's Civil War monument. The ceremony, one of hundreds taking place around the United States at exactly the same time, will include a presentation of a wreath, brief remarks and bell ringing. It marks the return of peace and the end of the defining conflict in all of American history.
For the past four years, the National Park Service and many other organizations and individuals have been commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War. On April 9, 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant met Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Virginia's Appomattox Courthouse to set the terms of surrender of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The surrender, at last, ended four years of rebellion that resulted in the death of nearly three quarter of a million Americans. Read more about what's planned for the ceremony.

SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM
Hillsdale's groundbreaking, super-duper outdoor youth program is entering its seventh year in the Roeliff Jansen Park. Its mission is to provide a safe, fun-filled and nature-oriented program for up to 60 local youths. The 2015 program runs from July 6 through August 14 from 9 am to 3 pm. For more details and the application, visit this page. The deadline is May 1.

CLEAN-UP DAY MAY 9
It's officially spring and that means it's time for clean-up. The Town of Hillsdale Garage on Old Town Road will be open on Saturday morning, May 9, 9 am to noon, to receive your discarded stuff. One load per Hillsdale resident. No exceptions. No household garbage, toxins, empty paint cans, old tires, or computer monitors. Cash and check donations will be accepted to support the Summer Youth Program. By the way, hazardous waste is handled at the County Highway Garage on Route 23B in Greenport. Check out their website for details.

A NEW WINE SHOP
We were all very sorry to see B&G close its doors last month after decades on the same site. As we learn from viewing the old post cards and photographs of Hillsdale, nothing stays the same. But we're very happy to report that Chuck Weldon, owner of the IGA, is opening a new wine shop on Anthony Street, next door to Trudy's Beauty Shop. It won't be the first time, as some Hillsdalers will recall, that spirits and haircuts were under the same roof. We hope this is a happy omen for Hillsdale Fine Wine and Spirits, scheduled to open as soon as the license is granted by the State. "Memorial Day, if we're lucky," says Chuck. "But more likely sometime in June." Fingers crossed!

OH, DEER!
Old-timers report that they can't remember a time when so many deer marauded around the Roe Jan area. Are deer nibbling away your garden? Their favorite dining time is early morning just before daybreak and nightfall. Weather and food scarcity have an impact on what gets eaten. An adult can put away six to ten pounds of food a day - that's a lot of hostas, tulips, holly, day lilies, sedum, rhododendrons and azaleas, all of which grow in our Roe Jan gardens.
While nothing is foolproof (including certain dogs), here are some ways of keeping your garden reasonably safe - plus a list of plants deer are likely to find less delectable. Good luck.

IN THE NEWS
For better or worse, it's our custom to share links about Hillsdale in the news. As reported in the Register Star, "it has been alleged the Hillsdale Highway Department has not fulfilled legal obligations to their local Teamsters union, a union official wrote in a letter to the town supervisor." THERE'S STILL TIME TO DINE OUT FOR THE LIBRARY
For a second year, the Roeliff Jansen Community Library has joined with local restaurants to sponsor "Dine Out for the Library," an event to raise funds for children's programming at the library. Twelve local Roe Jan restaurants are donating 10% of their dinner totals (two restaurants donated breakfast and lunch) from a given date. A few local classics coming up: Hillsdale House on April 8, Taconic Wayside Inn on April 15, and the Swiss Hutte on April 23. More here.
