HILLSDALE NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2014

Greetings!

If you're reading this, you already know that the Hillsdale Newsletter provides one of the most comprehensive listing of Roe Jan-area events and happenings. From chicken barbecues to festivals to sublime concerts, they're all posted on the Hillsdale Website and its Roe Jan Calendar.

We'd love to post your upcoming event or news. Email us at hillsdalecalendar@gmail.com anytime. It'll get posted to the website calendar promptly. Feedback welcome, too.

By the way, the late nineteenth-century photograph above shows a snowy Mount Washington House and Harvey's General Store - with the Hillsdale Telegraph College upstairs. If you have old photos, maps, or documents you like us to digitize for the Town's historic record, say the word.

Now for a little news.

ROE JAN FOOD PANTRY

Our local Roe Jan Food Pantry is a group of dedicated volunteers across many organizations in the community who feed and support those who need help all year long. It relies on the financial assistance and food donations from all of us and receives absolutely no State or Federal assistance. This year, during the Thanksgiving rush, a volunteer crew of Taconic Hills students shown below, generously packed and, when necessary, delivered 150 Thanksgiving baskets.

The work isn't done. 175 Christmas baskets still need to be organized and dispersed this month. If you need help, want to volunteer or want to make a contribution to this project, please click here.

GIFTS FOR LOCAL KIDS

There's no stopping our local volunteers. But that doesn't mean you're help isn't needed, too.

Each year, needy children in our community find something special under their Christmas tree thanks to your generous donations. This year, at least 110 children need our support. Christmas Friends is looking for volunteer shoppers, gift-wrappers, and financial donations. Please contact Charlotte Shutts at (518) 325-3637 to offer your support.

A NEW SHOP IN TOWN

Last month we remembered the old Farmerette shop. This month we're happy to welcome to Lynne Chmurzynski's Mirror Mirror Clothing. Located in the 1845 Althouse-Higgins house on Route 23, the building was beautifully restored by Lynne and her husband, contractor Bill Sullivan.

All are welcome anytime but don't miss a Ribbon Cutting and reception, sponsored by the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, on Friday, December 5 at 4:30 pm. Please stop by to say hello and have a look around - there's plenty of parking behind the shop!

BALD EAGLE SIGHTING

Hillsdale welcomes two new residents. A pair of handsome bald eagles have built a huge nest on an old white pine in the woods of the Roeliff Jansen Park. They can be seen soaring above the Roe Jan Kill where they hunt for fish, their favorite food. A bald eagle was recently spotted on Mitchell Street at the foot of White Hill. Could it be part of the couple nested in the park? Or another? More about our new residents here. Say, if any interesting critters cross your neck of the woods and you get a good picture, send it our way so can post.

NEW SIDEWALKS COMING TO TOWN

The Town Board took the next step in its ongoing project to improve the Town's sidewalks at the November 18 board meeting. It authorizes the creation a special sidewalks development account, which will make it easier to audit the money involved in the project that gets underway in 2015. Hillsdale will receive over $500,000 for the project from the State. The project is expected to be completed in 2016. Read the article.

IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!

Not just a single tree! A whole forest of trees, sponsored by a bunch of Hillsdale businesses, will be illuminated on December 6, 2014, 4:30 pm - 6 pm.  Music!

The goal of this newsletter, issued by Hillsdale's Town Board, is to share a bit of local news and the long list of the many cool things that are happening in the Roe Jan community.  If you want to promote your upcoming event, email the details. Pictures and jpgs welcome. No pdfs, please.
