Advent Series 2015
with Reverend Brandon Nagel
and Jan Chapman as The Story Teller
Sunday, November 29
"The Love of the Magi"

Our Advent Series begins this Sunday with an exploration of Divine Love as the Story Teller shares with us O. Henry's The Gift of the Magi.  Reverend Brandon will further expand upon this quality of Divine Love based on Charles Fillmore's idea that calling upon the divine quality of love
will adjust misunderstandings and guide you
in maintaining a life that is healthy,
harmonious and free.

Vocalist, Molly Hammer, joins our magnificent music team for a wonderful kick-off to the joyous season of Advent!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Thanksgiving Day  Community Potluck
All Church Thanksgiving Day Potluck
Thursday, November 26th

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family, share a wonderful meal and give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. If you have no family in town, we invite you to join with your church family in harmony hall for this special occasion. The doors will open at 9:30 am so we may set up and prepare our food until 12 noon. At noon we will pray-in and Thanksgiving dinner will be served. We'll enjoy dining and conversation until 1:15 and then begin clean-up so that we can lock building by 2 pm. Please bring a dish to share that serves 10, remembering that our large refrigerator is currently out of commission, so plan your potluck item accordingly. This is an all church, all community event. Please contact Gary Spaulding at cookinggroup@ucop.org with any questions. Reservations are not required but it does help us with planning. So please contact Gary if you plan to come.

"Share the Joy" Christmas Outreach Project
There are still 75 tags left to adopt.  Pick yours up this Sunday!  If you'd prefer to donate toward the purchase of these gifts and have us do the shopping for you, we do accept cash/check/credit card & kiosk donations as well.

The UCOP "Share the Joy" Project has begun with wish tag adoptions continuing through this Sunday, November 29 and all gifts due back to the church by December 6. The Share the Joy project is a wonderful, rewarding way to find deeper meaning and purpose in the Christmas holiday. We will be providing gifts and Christmas cheer for children and adults through Hope Care Center, Kaw Valley Center, Cornerstones of Care, Community Living Opportunities/ Marty Lane House and our own UCOP family.   An outreach project of this size really does take a lot of energy, dedication and LOVE to be successful! If you would like to volunteer to help you can contact Volunteer Coordinator, Deb Filby at 649-1750 x3025 or dfilby@ucop.org.

A Message about Community Outreach ...

"Winter Wear Drive"
to benefit the families of Community Linc
November 1-29

Community Linc is a wonderful organization that works to help homeless families get back on their feet again, giving them skills to find new jobs and affordable safe housing of their own. As the cold wintry season approaches, you can help these families keep warm and healthy with donations of new or gently used winter wear; coats, hats, gloves, scarves, etc. You may bring your donations to the church anytime during business hours in November until the 29th. Weekday donations may be left at the reception counter. There will also be a volunteer to receive your donations in the lobby on Sunday mornings. Thank you for sharing the warmth of your heart with the families of Community Linc.

Got some holiday shopping to do on Amazon?

Many of us do our holiday shopping these days from the comfort and convenience of our own homes using the Amazon marketplace.
Did you know that if you go to our website first, and then enter the Amazon site through our link, the church will then get a small percentage of that purchase?  It's like free money for the church!  And it doesn't have to be a spiritual book or something church-related either. We will get a small percentage of anything you purchase on Amazon, if you go through our site first on your way there. How cool is that?!  It doesn't cost you anything to help support your spiritual community because you were going to shop anyway, weren't you!  Now you can do it and help UCOP at the same time. Just click here and it will take you to the UCOP Amazon access page.  You can also find the Amazon access page from a link on our Homepage as well at www.ucop.org.

So happy shopping and thank you for your support!
We truly appreciate you.

Giving Tree for SafeHome
Giving Tree (Sponsored by Women in Unity)
November 29 - December 13

Calling all warm hearts! You can help warm the bodies and spirits of those in need at SAFEHOME. Approximately 7,500 individuals are helped at SAFEHOME each year. SAFEHOME provides a healing atmosphere where survivors of domestic violence can gain inner strength, build self-esteem, explore options and establish a life free of violence. You can help by "decorating" our Giving Tree in harmony hall with hats, gloves and scarves. The tree will be in place as of November 29. As you make your lists for your holiday shopping, please consider adding this gift of warmth, love and support.

Men's Breakfast - December 5
Men's Group Breakfast
Saturday, December 5
8 to 10 am in harmony hall

Join the Men's group for a delicious breakfast with eggs, bacon, pancakes and "all the fixin's." Good food and conversation precede this month's program with our speaker, John Hoefer, of the Kansas City Healing project.

Starting out as a UCOP affinity group in 2005, the Kansas City Healing project has provided thousands of energy healing sessions to cancer patients, and now veterans and their families, in the Kansas City Area. They are even providing sessions in their healing room at the Menorah Cancer Center in Overland Park! Clients report a significant reduction of pain, anxiety and fatigue after their sessions and are healing faster from their treatments and surgeries. We will explore what energy healing is and how can it help cancer patients, veterans and YOU!

The Remembrance Tree
On the 2nd Sunday of Advent, December 6, we'll take a moment to breathe within this busy season and explore the theme of Peace. Ritual can be a effective tool in bringing a more peaceful, centered feeling within. So we invite you all to take part in the decorating of our Remembrance Tree. During the service on December 6, you may come forward with an item you wish to place on the tree in memory of some person or experience that resonates strongly in your memory at this time of year. This item can be a cherished ornament, or one you've created especially for the occasion. It can be a picture or a note, whatever is meaningful to you that will hang from a Christmas tree branch. You will not be asked to share the meaning behind your ornament. That is for your heart alone.
It is our hope to add to this Remembrance Tree each year, so we would like to keep these ornaments and pack them away safely to put up again next year. You may, of course, take yours home with you after the January 3rd White Stone Sunday service if you would prefer. Just attach a tiny tag to it with your name and phone number before you hang it on the tree.

Book Signing with Roderick Townley - December 6

Praise for
A BITTER MAGIC:
"A magical adventure, a fascinating setting, and some chills that will please most middle graders looking for spooky fantasy." - School Library Journal

In this coming-of-age fantasy, twelve-year-old Cisley Thummel searches for her mother, who disappears during a magic act. Cisley's supernatural sense of smell leads her through shifting labyrinths, a band of gypsies, and a closet of whispering ball gowns to the darkest of family secrets-at the explosive crossroads of illusion and true magic.

RODERICK TOWNLEY has published 16 books, 8 of them for children. Best known for THE GREAT GOOD THING (the first book of a trilogy) and THE BLUE SHOE (illustrated by the Harry Potter artist), Roderick has been likened by critics to C.S. Lewis for his spiritual, magical work. (www.RoderickTownley.com)

So bring the whole family and join us for a fun-filled evening that will make your cheeks hurt you'll be smiling so much! And bring a batch of cookies to share at the Cookie Potluck downstairs after the show with the cast. We got hot cocoa too!

In the Presence Meditation
This month, experience the special "All Is Calm, All Is Bright" meditation, a traditional favorite for over the last ten years. Bring your family and friends for a transformational holiday experience.
This meditation provides the opportunity to go into a deep, deep experience of the Presence. Meditation does wonderful things to our human bodies, giving them time to revitalize and heal themselves. At the same time, our souls experience their real, true selves, going to the place inside that is timeless and eternal. After the meditation, there will be a sacred prayer circle to share and honor one another's prayer intentions. You'll experience such serenity you'll want it to go on forever.
