"Love Hurts"

We invite you to join Reverend Brandon Nagel
this Sunday, February 15, the day after Valentine's Day, to talk about how it is that Love... the greatest of all forces in this universe, sometimes seems to bring such pain and confusion with it.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Family Fun Night - Friday, February 13

Tomorrow night

Everyone is invited to come together Friday evening, February 13 in harmony hall for a Family Fun Night here at UCOP! At 6:00 pm the YOU will be providing "Walking Tacos" for a love offering. That's where you add taco fixings to a bag of Fritos and eat it right out of the bag! And if you'd like to bring a little something potluck to go with that, like dessert or nachos, please do!

Then at 7:00 pm, in the sanctuary, we'll begin the evening's entertainment, a very special feature length movie presentation of "Alice in Wonderland" by Jan Chapman, our Director of Communications & Worship.

In 2012, Jan and her daughter, Jade, began a 3-year labor of love in which they re-shot Tim Burton's version of this story (the one with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter) just for fun and for something unique and interesting to do with Jade's 10 year old friends, and a few odd adults. The result is a delightful, kid-friendly telling of the story that you don't have to be a kid to enjoy! If you'd like to view the full trailer for the film, just click on the link below:

Community Outreach Partnerships & POTLUCK!

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that our Community Outreach Partners for 2015 are Community Linc (www.communitylinc.org) and Heart to Heart International (www.hearttoheart.org).

Community Linc's mission is to end homelessness, impact poverty, and remove barriers to self-sufficiency for families in the Kansas City area. Heart to Heart International's mission is to improve global health with initiatives that connect people to resources. They help with disaster relief and are active in Haiti and Liberia.

And we are overjoyed that two incredible servants have stepped forward to co-lead these partnership initiatives. Dan Beckett and Julie Randolph are both deeply passionate about service outside the walls of UCOP.
Dan  will be the point person for all the activities with Community Linc (localoutreach@ucop.org).

And Julie Randolph will organize all the wonderful opportunities with Heart to Heart International for all that are called to this area of service (globaloutreach@ucop.org).

Community Outreach Church-Wide Potluck- March 1
Please plan to join us in harmony hall after the 11am service on March 1 to celebrate the fantastic cooks in our community at our church-wide potluck. This will also be a chance for you to sign up for the community outreach opportunities that speak to you. Monica Enloe from Heart to Heart International and Teresa McClain from Community Linc will be available, along with Dan Beckett and Julie Randolph, our outreach team leaders, to answer questions and discuss the upcoming opportunities for you. It will be a fun way to explore how we can come together as a community and take our Light out into the world!
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Able-Bodied Volunteers Requested
Do you have a strong back and wish to serve your spiritual community in an upcoming project?  We will be changing out all the light bulbs and re-focusing stage lighting instruments in the sanctuary very soon.  To do so requires moving a very large 25 foot, 3-story, A-frame ladder that weighs 150lbs around the sanctuary so that we can get up there and fix these lights.
Volunteers will not be asked to climb this ladder, just move it around.  We really need at least 4 able-bodied volunteers to maneuver this thing.
If you are willing to help, please contact Jane Sauve as soon as possible at 649-1750 x-3012 or jsauve@ucop.org

Hawaiian Ho'oponopono

The ancient Hawaiian practice of Pono is "being at one with everything"--being right with yourself, with Spirit, with others and with all of creation. Daily living often pulls us out of alignment with ourselves and our world. During this three week series you will explore the process of Ho'oponopono, a way of returning to the harmony that is natural to your spirit greatness. In addition, you will learn how to use your HA (Sacred Breath) to deepen your Pono (unity with all) and live the essence of Aloha.

In the Presence Meditation
This meditation provides the opportunity to go into a deep, deep experience of the Presence. Meditation does wonderful things to our human bodies, giving them time to revitalize and heal themselves. At the same time, our souls experience their real, true selves, going to the place inside that is timeless and eternal. After the meditation, there will be a sacred prayer circle to share and honor one another's prayer intentions. You'll experience such serenity you'll want it to go on forever.

2015 Midwest Unity Men's Retreat

On Friday evening we will also have a sacred ceremonial drumming circle as well as live music, both led by our very own Mark Gossman.

What does it mean to be a man? As your life unfolds and you continue to grow through the various roles of a man (partner, father, son, worker, teacher/learner, leader/follower), what do you use as your guide for understanding and becoming your true self? As a connected group of men, what agreements can we put into place to allow us to be vulnerable so that we can help one another in our continual journey of rediscovering our true self?

Reverend Albert Wingate has been exploring this topic and would like to share his thoughts and experiences. Albert is an avid storyteller. He uses the power of experienced story-telling to facilitate an active learning process that promotes connection and relationship building. Large group and small group discussions and activities will be used to facilitate this process. The goal is to deepen our understanding of developing as a man of wisdom and spirit through the various stages of our lives.

To register please contact Jason Haney at 816.825.1676 or

SoulCollage

Using images, scissors and glue, attendees design a 5" x 8" card depicting something unique about themselves-a gift from their Soul. Whether you make one card or many, you will have a great time and create inspired pieces. Making SoulCollage® cards with others is a powerful way to answer life's questions. Insights are shared in a circle of safety. Participants are inspired by, and feel acknowledged and supported in the community. Each member benefits from the perspective of the community's individuals. The world needs everyone's wisdom.

Environmental Fast Fact of the Week

Brought to you by your Green Team!

Scientists have concluded that when the amount of carbon in the atmosphere exceeds 350 parts per million, the effects of global warming result in rampant melting of arctic ice, drought spreading across the planet and rampant increases in diseases like dengue fever and malaria occurring in places where they've never been seen before. The bad news is that we've exceeded 400 parts per million.

Each week between now and April 5th, the Green Team will offer 10 "Environmental Fast Facts" highlighting something you can do to become a better steward of the earth as well as the average reduction in pounds of CO2 emissions each household will realize.

This Week:

What you can do:  Keep thermostat set at 68 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the summer.

Average reduction of CO2 emissions: 690 pounds a year.

Why:   A change of 3 degrees or more (72 can be considered the "normal" temperature setting) and you can prevent the emission of almost 1100 lbs of CO2 annually.

How:   Set it and forget it! You can buy a programmable thermostat. KCP&L customers can request an energy optimizing programmable thermostat.

Do You Shop on Amazon?

Many of us do our shopping these days from the comfort and convenience of our own homes using the Amazon marketplace.
Did you know that if you go to our website first, and then enter the Amazon site through our link, the church will then get a small percentage of that purchase?  It's like free money for the church!  And it doesn't have to be a spiritual book or something church-related either. We will get a small percentage of anything you purchase on Amazon, if you go through our site first on your way there. How cool is that?!  It doesn't cost you anything to help support your spiritual community because you were going to shop anyway, weren't you!  Now you can do it and help UCOP at the same time. Just click here and it will take you to the UCOP Amazon access page.  You can also find the Amazon access page from a link on our Homepage as well at www.ucop.org.

So happy shopping and thank you for your support!
We truly appreciate you.
