 | Our 1st Candidate Weekend - November 16
| |
Our first candidate for the position of Lead Minister at Unity Church of Overland Park is Rev. Nancy Oristaglio. Sunday morning, November 16, Rev. Nancy will present the meditation and lesson for that day. Following the 11:00 service, there will be a congregational potluck. Everyone is invited to bring a yummy potluck dish to share and once everyone has gotten their food and has settled into their seats, we will begin a Q & A/Meet & Greet session with the candidate. Congregants may get to know her better and ask her questions. Then everyone will have an opportunity to fill out a congregational evaluation form giving their impressions and opinions of Rev. Nancy throughout the Sunday events. This form will be available in printed form or online to fill out. Our board will review all the evaluation forms from congregants and take that feedback into consideration as they continue to discern who is most qualified to lead this spiritual community in the direction we've determined that we would like to go. Rev. Nancy J. Oristaglio has served for ten years as the Sr. Minister of Unity Church of Antelope Valley in Palmdale, California. (www.unityav.org) From 2006-2013, she served as the elected Regional Representative of all the churches of the Southwest Region of Unity Worldwide Ministries. She also served as a member of the National Standards Ministry Team of UWM. In 2009, she was chosen as one of five candidates selected internationally for the Unity Worldwide Ministries Board of Trustees. She has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Unity Alhambra Foundation in Alhambra, California from 2007 to the present. She is also a member of the Licensing and Ordination Team of Unity Worldwide Ministries. In June, 2014, her ministry received a large Google Adwords Grant for the online audio meditation series she wrote and recorded. Her meditation series, "Your 12 Powers," contains fourteen articles and audio meditations based on The 12 Powers, the book written by Charles Fillmore. The meditation series is a free course on the church website and has been visited by thousands of people from all around the world. She also writes a column for the Religion page of the Antelope Valley Press.

 | "Change For Change" Rides Again!
| |
With two ministerial candidates coming from out of town very soon for their candidate try-out weekends, we have pulled out the old "Change for Change" bowl once again.
You may recall that last year, after we had collected the "Change for Change" funds and selected a new senior minister without having to use them, we asked you all to vote on how you would like those funds used. And you voted for a Guest Speaker Fund. So, thanks to your generosity last year, those funds were used to bring 15 guest speakers in this year!
And now we need your help again to fund the costs of bringing these new candidates to town. So we invite you to save your spare change in one of our nifty "Change for Change" cups (available in the lobby) and then bring that change in to deposit in the bowl on Sundays. Our new giving kiosk also has a button for you to select the "Change for Change" program if you'd prefer to donate that way. You may also give online here. And if you would like to cover the cost of a specific item, such as the cost of one plane ticket, or one lunch, or one nights' hotel stay, you may do so by speaking to the board member standing by the "Change for Change" bowl on Sunday. We are so grateful for your support in this exciting time!

Men's Breakfast
Saturday, November 1
8 to 10 am in harmony hall
Mike McCord, leader of the UCOP Green Team will speak this month on the subject of "The Environment - What we can do as individuals, as a church community and as citizens." Mike will also speak on "Leadership - One Step at Time" and the lessons he has learned.
In 2003, Mike started the Green Team at Unity Church of Overland Park and was the co-founder of Unity Worldwide Ministry's EarthCare Program in 2008. Mike is the author of the EarthCare Connections newsletter and a periodic contributor to Unity Leaders magazine. Mike's life experiences demonstrate how he believes "everything is possible." In 2001, Mike experienced a series of devastating personal tragedies that turned his life upside down. These included a broken neck and damaged spinal cord as a result of a home accident that left Mike a quadriplegic with a 10% chance of ever walking again. About the same time, Mike experienced job loss and divorce. Thirty months later Mike climbed Mt. Elbert, the highest mountain in Colorado. His book, "One Step at a Time, Memoir of a Former Quadriplegic," chronicles his life with emphasis upon this dark period of time, his ultimate triumph over these adversities and the lessons learned as a result.

 | Unity Garden Crop Mob rescheduled due to rain!
| |
It's Crop Mob time!! The Unity Garden is planning a crop mob, blitz workday to get the garden ready for winter. We will be planting garlic and applying compost and mulch to our beds so they are in good shape for next spring. A Crop Mob is a term used when there is a task that needs a lot of people to help (sort of like the old fashioned barn raising.) If you would like to participate, contact Kelly Sturgeon at ksturgeon@ucop.org or call 913-649-1750 x-3010 for more information and directions to the garden. We will also enjoy a potluck picnic afterwards. Bring a favorite dish or dessert to share. Come enjoy good company and help our garden stay sustainable!

Suggested Love Offering: $10
John Cartwright has been working with gemstones for more than 15 years.
