"Who Will Weep for Nineveh?
A New Look at the Story of Jonah"

Ready for a rootin'-tootin' Old Testament sermon from Unity Institute's always provocative theologian and historian, the Rev. Dr. Tom Shepherd? If you attended Sunday school as a kid, you probably learned the Jonah story is about a reluctant missionary who tried to escape God's call and got swallowed by a whale. But the headline for this clearly mythological ancient tale ought to be much more than "Runaway preacher thwarted by voracious marine mammal..." The Book of Jonah is about learning to forgive the unforgivable. At a time when the world is so polarized, it is a message humanity desperately needs to take seriously.

Rev. Dr. Shepherd will also be available

in the lobby after services to sign his book, "Glimpses of Truth."

The Rev. Dr. Shepherd is best known to Unity audiences as the author of the popular column That's a Good Question, which has run for 15 consecutive years in Unity Magazine®. A retired U.S. Army chaplain and decorated Vietnam veteran, Dr. Shepherd has been in ministry since 1976. He is the author of several books. He has also taught middle school for 10 years, run for public office in Georgia (and lost), driven a taxi in Idaho, flown helicopters in Southeast Asia and published two science fiction novels. Today "Dr. Tom" teaches historical and theological studies to ministerial students at Unity Institute® and Seminary. Like his Unity Magazine column, his Unity FM radio program "Let's Talk About It" is edgy, controversial and full of lively, collegial exchanges.

2014... the Year of "I AM"
The words "I AM" are a holy expression for the name of God - the highest aspect of yourself. This year, we explore the highest possibility for our lives by choosing a quality each month to focus on and express. In every moment know that you are the living expression of the Christ!

This year we invite you to consider empowering your life
with the following affirmations:

"I AM"...
Boundless... Real... Courageous... Aware... Curious... Adventurous... Lighthearted... Visionary... Limitless... Connected... and Sacred

In the month of August, let us affirm together:

World Day of Prayer
Thousands of people will join Silent Unity and Unity churches around the world on September 11 for the 21st annual Unity World Day of Prayer. The theme of this 24-hour prayer event is "We Are the Light of the World: Let Your Light Shine!"  World Day of Prayer gives us an opportunity to come together in celebration of our oneness with God, each other and our world.  Through prayer we foster peace and wholeness in our community and in our individual lives.  The 24-hour prayer vigil will begin the evening of Wednesday, September 10 with opening ceremonies featuring keynote speaker, best-selling author and poet, Mark Nepo.  Names may be submitted for prayer online at www.worlddayofprayer.org. The 24-hour prayer vigil traditionally begins with a beautiful candlelight walk across the central courtyard of Unity Village. This year, for the first time, we will symbolize the power of our united prayers by asking people everywhere to light a virtual candle at www.wordldayofprayer.org. These virtual candles will be displayed as points of light on a global map.  Further information about all the events surrounding World Day of Prayer can be found at the above website, or in Spanish at www.diadeoracionmundial.org

Fillmore Healing Class Available

Join us as we explore the spiritual principles that support the expression of health and wholeness in our minds, bodies and affairs. We will be working with Myrtle and Charles Fillmore's interpretation of how Jesus used and demonstrated those principles in his own life. Such principles will be presented to support participants in developing a practical understanding of Myrtle and Charles' theology as heart-centered metaphysicians. The goal will be that through the development of such practical understanding, participants will be inspired to also become heart-centered metaphysicians in their own lives. We also expect them to develop a "tool kit" for using healing principles in their daily lives and in supporting other people in their own healing process.

Men's Group Breakfast Saturday, September 6

Men's Group Breakfast - Saturday, September 6

from 8 to 10 am in harmony hall, with Cathy Combs.

Cathy says, "My basic premise has always been that we are Spirit Incarnate. I didn't always have that wording but I've always had that knowing and writing my books has made that knowing crystal clear and I'm so very grateful. I have always been connected with a quiet calm and confidence that I consider the hallmarks of my life. I have always known that we are innately good and that knowing is an immeasurable blessing. These knowings are the hallmarks of all I do as I continue to share my messages with a world I love so very much.

In the Presence Meditation

This meditation provides the opportunity to go into a deep, deep experience of the Presence. Meditation does wonderful things to our human bodies, giving them time to revitalize and heal themselves. At the same time, our souls experience their real, true selves, going to the place inside that is timeless and eternal. After the meditation, there will be a sacred prayer circle to share and honor one another's prayer intentions. You'll experience such serenity you'll want it to go on forever.

Women in Unity Meeting - September 20

As we move into the Fall season, we will want to resonate with the positive qualities of that season - reaping the benefits of the harvest planted in the other seasons. Positive qualities of this season include nurturance, acceptance, groundedness and abundance. When we resonate with these qualities and not our problems, we live our lives with greater joy and happiness. When we are out of sync with this element we may find ourselves expressing and living from a negative state of mind and missing out on the abundance of what is there for us. Resonance Repatterning is a system that will allow us to realign ourselves so we can fully enjoy the positive qualities of this Fall season.

Shirley Collins, LSCSW, a member of Unity Church for over 15 years, will be offering Seasonal Repatterning for the Unity Women's Group on Saturday, September 20.   It will be in her home with a potluck luncheon immediately following the group repatterning. The address is 10608 Bluejacket Street, Overland Park, KS 66214. The house is located just south of 103rd St. & Nieman Rd.   If you have questions or need clarification on directions, call Shirley at (913) 341-2704. womeninunitygroup@gmail.com

Soul Collage - September 22

SoulCollage® is a spiritual process that supports the journey through life by using images to express both the wisdom and the shadow-side of one's soul. This is a time to gather together and make SoulCollage® cards. There will be a meditation, followed by card-making time and then time to "read" our cards as a group. All supplies will be provided for you, but you may bring special magazines if you would like. Also bring any cards you have already made. If you would like to purchase additional card blanks, they are available at the UCOP bookstore. You don't need any artistic ability; the cards are made with simple cutting and pasting skills. Everything you need is already within you, waiting to be discovered through this simple "soul-tending" process. If this is your first SoulCollage® experience, contact Barbara ahead of time and plan to arrive at 5:15pm.

Do You Shop on Amazon?

Many of us do our shopping these days from the comfort and convenience of our own homes using the Amazon marketplace. Did you know that if you go to our website first, and then enter the Amazon site through our link, the church will then get a small percentage of that purchase?  It's like free money for the church!  And it doesn't have to be a spiritual book or something church-related either. We will get a small percentage of anything you purchase on Amazon, if you go through our site first on your way there. How cool is that?!  It doesn't cost you anything to help support your spiritual community because you were going to shop anyway, weren't you!  Now you can do it and help UCOP at the same time. Just click here and it will take you to the UCOP Amazon access page.  You can also find the Amazon access page from a link on our Homepage as well at www.ucop.org.   So happy shopping and thank you for your support!  We truly appreciate you.
