Every where you turn in Northern Michigan, fall is greeting you with its crimson leaves, pungent woodsmoke and chilly evenings. We've reached the halfway point in our 12 Knits of Christmas, which means that it's time to think about something for men. This week's kits work double duty, paired together or worn alone, whether you're knitting for the men in your life (think hunting husbands, hard-to-shop-for-brother-in-laws and sons who've gone off to college!) or stockpiling a few unisex staples for your own closet.

Looking to create an added Autumn ambience in your home? You can now find Farmhouse Candles (made locally in Cedar!) on our website for scents that fill a room with fall flair. Click HERE  to order.

It can be hard to knit for men. Really hard. They love to support your knitting endeavors, but they want to look manly doing it. They want something rugged, but not scratchy. Simple, but not elementary. Handmade, but not homemade. And sometimes, even after we've done the research, involved them in every stage of the project, tested, swatched, blocked, scrutinized, ripped, re-knit....the finished piece doesn't end up seeing the light of day. We don't mean to toot our own horn, but we think we might have come up with a near-perfect project for the problem that ails knitters everywhere. Insert the striped scarf. Ours is knit with the luxurious (but simultaneously rugged!) Fibre Company Acadia, a gorgeous blend of silk, Merino wool and alpaca, but with enough visual interest (the tweedy bits) to keep from feeling feminine. And here's what makes this scarf different: it's two-sided, which makes it both completely reversible and doubly warm. Scholarly stripes? There's just something about a striped scarf that reminds us of freshly sharpened pencils, football games and late night study sessions at the quad.

Our sample is shown in The Fibre Company Acadia in Bur Oak and Amber, but you can choose any of the colors below for a different look. (We think Driftwood + Poppy make an equally magical team!)

Each kit will make one striped scarf and includes an easy-to-read pattern and two skeins each of Fibre Company Acadia in your choice of two colors.

It's already cold enough most mornings here in Leelanau County to say, "If I only had a hat to pull on right now. Something simple to knit, not too fussy but a little interesting to work on in the evenings, a hat that anyone in the house could wear, kind of neutral to go with any of my coats, just the thing to mask bed head while dropping off the kids at school...." We think this simple cabled hat fits the bill. (Especially because there's cashmere in the yarn!) An added bonus? It's quick enough to knit in a weekend. And it looks good on everyone, whether you're cross-country skiing or crossing campus to get to class.

Our sample is shown in YOTH Yarns in Cacao, a neutral, dusty gray-meets-brown, but you can choose any of the colors below for a different look.

Each kit will make one unisex hat and includes an easy-to-read pattern and one skein of YOTH Yarns Big Sister in your choice of colors.

We know that Life--is about taking time to enjoy the everyday, as well as all the other obligations we have, day in, day out. It's not hard at all to get caught up in the shuffling and the planning and the just plain busyness of it all... and to gloss over the daily joys, forgetting about why it is that we do what we do and just like that, the moment is gone. While we we were planning for the next season.

One of the greatest gifts we have as knitters is to spend a little time every day with our tools, our minds, our hands, some quiet and make. Making a tiny sweater for the first grandchild that's growing inside your daughter's belly. Making a pair of mittens to keep your best friend's hands warm out on the cross-country ski trail. Making a sweater for the guy who finally gave you that ring.

It doesn't have to be big. Or complicated. Or expensive. (We've found that a simple garter stitch dish cloth and a handmade soap tied with a ribbon makes a wonderful wedding/housewarming/thank-you-for-being-my-postmaster gift, time after time after

time.)

What a gift should be, however, is heart felt. Which is why we're starting now with our celebrated 12 Knits of Christmas (in its eighth year, if you can believe it!) We've written 12 patterns for the hands, home and heart that, if you start now, will give you plenty of time to create meaningful gifts while rejoicing in the everyday.

Without question, our 12 Knits of Christmas is the best it's ever been.

The focus is on gifts that you'll be ecstatic to give, whether it's because they're knit with yarn you've never seen before (they are), they all require less than two weeks to complete (they do) or because they're fresh takes on classic knitted gifts (they will be).

There's more. (Of course.)  We'll be giving away six outrageous prizes to six very lucky knitters.

1.) For each ambitious customer who purchases ALL 12 kits, you'll be entered into a drawing to win a $250 gift certificate to Wool & Honey, either in-house or online.

2.) For each kit ordered, you'll be entered into a separate drawing for
three (3) $25 gift certificates, two (2) $50 gift certificates and one (1) $100 gift certificate to Wool & Honey, either in-house or online.  (Ordering 3 of the same kit?  That counts as 3 entries!)
