NEWS FROM  THE HIVE

Wool & Honey banner

Happy November, friends!

This week is a double whammy--we're debuting the gorgeous colorway for the December installment of the Sleeping Bear Yarn Club, as well as the 8th gift of the 12 Knits.

One thing we're noticing every time we turn around is two-color knitting, mostly modern variations on classic Fair Isle styles.  Liz designed this sweet, fitted beanie with a few traditional details, including corrugated ribbing and a Swiss check pattern.  We think it could have come right from the latest Sundance catalog.

Thanksgiving Weekend is such a great time in Northern Michigan--there's so much going on all weekend long.  However, all that activity--between prepping for guests, cooking the meal, cleaning up and then starting to think about the next big holiday--is exhausting.  So here's a thought: instead of rushing around all weekend, why not spend a little time on yourself?  Instead of beating back the crowds at the mall, wouldn't you rather spend a weekend doing what you love?  How about spending a cozy weekend with other knitters, finishing (or starting!) a few knitting projects or picking out some stocking stuffers you won't be able to find anywhere else?

We'll be giving you more details over the coming weeks, but plan on joining us both on Friday, November 28th & Saturday, November 29th at Wool & Honey, where we'll be on hand to help you start (or finish!) some of your Christmas gifts.  We'll be snug and cozy in the shop, knitting ALL weekend, with coffee and treats to make you feel right at home.  This is a weekend meant for relaxation and inspiration--we can't wait to show you some of the lovelies that will be arriving over the next several weeks!

"What is the good of your stars and trees, your sunrise and the wind, if they do not enter into our daily lives?"
-E.M. Forster

We are thrilled to announce the December selections for the  Sleeping Bear Yarn Club.

Dyed exclusively for us by Lorna's Laces in Chicago, we are so pleased with this yarn in the softest of pinks.  Sunrise is one of our favorite times of day--with a cup of hot coffee and knitting, of course!

December's delightful little package will include a skein of Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock (80% superwash Merino wool, 20% nylon--430 yds), an Upper Peninsula Dolomite stitch marker and your choice of the Lotus Shawl, Pink Ribbon Socks or the Wee Cria Baby Sweater, as well as the free gifts for NEW 12-month members.*

We think that one of the best things about knitting is combining traditional techniques with modern elements, putting a twist on the past for styles that work today.  This fitted beanie uses a few classic Fair Isle motifs--corrugating ribbing and the Swiss Check--in a hat that looks good on both men and women.  This hat is knit with a lovely American wool and silk blend that is light (because it's knit with a fingering weight yarn) yet warm (because of the two-stranded color technique).

Each kit includes an easy-to-read pattern and two contrasting colors of skeins of Quince & Co. Tern.

While we hope you're spending every minute of your spare time soaking up these September rays, we also know that a few short months from now is the culminating event for generous knitters everywhere.  The holiday season, while it may be just a frosty glimmer on the horizon, is slowly approaching.  And we know, because we've had the same conversations with so many of you year after year (after year), that this is the year you're going to do it right
No more knitting-induced carpal tunnel that sidelines you for the entire month of January.  No more Christmas Eve all-nighters (because we probably don't need to remind you that you're not 19 anymore.)  No more last-minute, caution-to-the-wind, unrealistic projects that leave you sweating, swearing and wondering whether they'll even like it.   (You can't knit a pair of socks for everyone in your office, your daughter's piano teacher and your husband's boss's brother if you wait until Thanksgiving weekend to start.  We know.  We've tried.)

The holidays, regardless of your specific traditions, are meant to celebrate the sacredness of humankind.  Gift knitting isn't about obligation or about one-upping your sister-in-law.  It really can just be stripped down to this: your two hands making something--big or small--for someone who matters in your life.  A 'thank-you' to the teacher who spends every day with your son--and the person who finally taught him to enjoy reading.  A little something for the neighbor who always waters your plants and picks up your mail while you're on vacation.  Your mother's favorite nurse--the only one who can get her to take her meds.

Without question, our 12 Knits of Christmas is the best it's ever been.  The focus is on gifts that you'll be ecstatic to give, whether it's because they're knit with yarn you've never seen before (they are), they all require less than two weeks to complete (they do) or because they're fresh takes on classic knitted gifts (they will be).

There's more.  (Of course.)  We'll be giving away two outrageous prizes to two very lucky knitters.

1.) For each ambitious customer who purchases ALL 12 kits, you'll be entered into a drawing to win a 12-month subscription to our exclusive Sleeping Bear Yarn Club (a $563.35 value!)

2.) For each kit ordered, you'll be entered into a separate drawing for a $100 gift certificate to Wool & Honey, either in-house or online.  (Ordering 3 of the same kit?  That counts as 3 entries!)
