So maybe Knitting Resolutions on January 1st aren't your thing, but what about a challenge for a special year? What about a real challenge, with specific parameters, for a short (but intense!) period of time? What if we took our knitting as seriously as athletes take their sport, at least once every four years?
Sound wacky? Insert the Knitting Olympics. The Knitting Olympics started during the 2006 Torino Olympics with the wackiest (and maybe most famous) knitter of them all, Stephanie Pearl McPhee, aka The Yarn Harlot.
Here are the original rules set by Stephanie from this blog post:
"Eligibility:
Any knitter who, embracing the "Citius, Altius, Fortius" ideal, would like to challenge themselves while embracing the Olympic spirit, and is just whacked enough to play along with me.
Concept:
You must cast on a project during the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter
Olympics (Feb 7th)- and finish before the Olympic flame goes out (Feb 23rd). That's 16 days.
Note: The Opening Ceremonies begin at 8pm Moscow time. There is a
time difference calculator to help you figure out your start time. Here is a quick reference: 20:00 MSK = 16:00 GMT = 11:00 am EST = 8:00 am PST
Rules:
- The project must be a challenge for you to complete in 16 days.
- There are no rules about what a challenge would be. Like the real Olympics, there are many areas to compete in. If you are a new knitter, then a garter stitch baby sweater might do...If you are experienced, well. I've already considered Torino. Use your own conscience.
- While this is intended to be somewhat difficult (like the Olympics) it is not intended to ruin your life. Don't set yourself up for failure. (Olympic athletes may cry, but they do not whine pitifully, sob and threaten members of their family with pointed sticks because they haven't slept in five days.) This is intended to (like the Olympics) require some measure of sacrifice, and be difficult, but it should be possible to attain.
- No casting on before the flame is lit.
- Finish before the flame goes out.
- You may swatch before the games. (I consider this "training.") "
While the original Knitting Olympics did not give out actual medals, fans of Wool & Honey will be competing for a gold and a silver medal. We'll be giving away two prizes (by choosing winners at random): one $50 gift certificate to Wool & Honey and one of our exclusive kits.
To enter, post a picture of your project on our Facebook page when you begin (sometime on February 7th) and your finished project before 12 a.m. EST on February 23rd. You must post some reference point in the photo of both the beginning AND end of your project to qualify (a Google time stamp, the closing ceremony on television in the background, etc).
Not sure what to pick for your project? Always wanted to learn Fair Isle but never learned? Try getting a head start on next Christmas with a stocking. Does your first sweater seem an insurmountable goal? Knit a baby sweater instead. Liz is going to complete her first lace shawl. Mark your calendars for February 14-17 (that's President's Weekend), where we'll have one of our legendary Wool & Honey trunk shows featuring local artisans all weekend, doing what they do best. Our culminating event will be on Saturday night, from 5 to 8 pm with a chocolate tasting with Grocer's Daughter chocolates. Jody Dotson from Grocer's Daughter will be speaking about Grocer's Daughter and their chocolate process. Elara Campbell will be in-house with her unique enameled copper jewelry. We'll be serving wine from local Longview Winery and introducing one of our newest delights here at the store--local honey from Ona Mission Honey Farm! Tickets for the event are now available here and will include a seat at the presentation, chocolate samples, wine, honey and an outrageous goody bag that will include some essentials for celebrating mid-winter, including: -a semi-precious stone stitch marker -a Grocer's Daughter truffle -one of our signature lip balms (in a brand new flavor!) -an exclusive coupon for outrageous deals storewide, only available for ticket holders ....AND MORE, all tucked in a commemorative glass.
