Ogden Clinic's Successful Quality Improvement Strategies
By: Daniel Chipping, MBA, MHA, Project Coordinator, HealthInsight

Ogden Clinic is a big part of the healthcare provided in Northern Utah with over 500 employees, including 90 healthcOgden Clinicare providers in 19 different specialties. Ogden Clinic is a leader in Utah for implementing strategies that lead to successful quality improvement outcomes. Most recently, these strategies have helped Ogden Clinic to successfully attest more than 70% of their providers for Meaningful Use in just 90 days.

The same strategies are now being used to guide the clinic toward successfully understanding and reporting for Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) as well as joining a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) pilot group. Whether yours is a large or small system, or an individual practice, these strategies will improve your chances for success in any project you undertake. Read more. . .

Medicare Meaningful Use Audits

Providers participating in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive program and attesting to meaningful use may receive a request to provide information during pre or post payment audits (http://www.cms.gov/Regulations-and-Guidance/Legislation/EHRIncentivePrograms/Downloads/EHR_Audit_Overview_FactSheet.pdf). The audit contractor, Figliozzi and Company will conduct random and targeted pre-payment audits. Targeted pre-payment audits will be based on anomalous data occurrences during attestation. Use of Health IT More Than Doubles
Since 2012
Dr w/ iPad

On May 22, 2013 HHS, CMS and  the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT  announced an important healthcare milestone - more than 50% of eligible professionals nationwide are using Electronic Health Records (EHR)s meaningfully in their offices and more than 80% of U.S. hospitals are using EHRs. We are proud to add that in Utah,  67% of providers working with HealthInsight, the Regional Extension Center, have attained meaningful use.

Congratulations on your role in this important milestone. Better use of EHRs leads to more coordinated care, fewer medical errors, and lower costs to the system. It is an honor to act as your partner in achieving the different stages of meaningful use and using health IT as a springboard to the many initiatives that will be critical to the new healthcare landscape.

We look forward to a lasting collaboration. Please call HealthInsight at 1-800-483-0932 if you have any questions.

Reasons Why PAs, NPs and CNMs Should Do Meaningful Use
Older couple with physician teaching use of EHR

The Meaningful Use Incentive Program is a great opportunity for a provider or clinic to help pay for transitioning from a paper system to an electronic health record (EHR) system. The opportunity to earn up to $44,000 for the Medicare incentive or $63,750 for the Medicaid incentive, per eligible provider, has convinced many providers and administrators to make the necessary changes in their processes, workflows, and policies. But, making the changes can be difficult, and when there is no obvious financial incentive for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant it is often times easiest to focus only on the physicians.

Despite the difficulty, many clinics and hospitals have made it a point to include their Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants in working toward meeting the meaningful use objectives. The reasoning listed below is an accumulation, and summary, of feedback we have received as we work with providers toward meeting meaningful use. Read more. . .

Racial/ Ethnic Disparities in the Awareness, Treatment, and Control of Hypertension - United States 2003 - 2010

RX
"Hypertension is a serious health issue that affects disproportionate numbers of minority people. In the May 10 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the CDC presented data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the period 2003-2010, and found significant racial/ethnic disparities in the awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension.

* The proportion of Mexican-Americans and blacks over age 65 with stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension was significantly greater than for whites. (Blacks 74%, Mexican-Americans 72%, whites 57%).

* Among those with stage 1 hypertension, treatment with medication was significantly lower for Mexican-Americans compared with their non-Hispanic counterparts.

* Among those with uncontrolled hypertension, blacks had higher rates of awareness and treatment compared with whites or Mexican-Americans. Mexican-Americans had the lowest rates of awareness and treatment, and were also lowest in terms of healthcare coverage."
