"I truly believe that if we keep telling the Christmas story, singing the Christmas songs, and living the Christmas spirit, we can bring joy and happiness and peace to this world."

Our guest today is Amanda Cabot, author of Christmas Roses. With both parents avid readers, it's no surprise that Amanda Cabot learned to read at an early age. From there it was only a small step to deciding to become a writer. Of course, deciding and becoming are two different things, as she soon discovered. Fortunately for the world, her first attempts at fiction, which included a play for her fifth grade class entitled "All About Thermometers," were not published, but she did meet her goal of selling a novel by her thirtieth birthday. Since then she's sold more than twenty five novels under a variety of pseudonyms. When she's not writing, Amanda enjoys sewing, cooking and - of course - reading. You can visit with Amanda at her website.

From the book's back cover:

Celia Anderson doesn't need anything for Christmas except a few more boarders, which are hard to come by in this small mining town. She certainly doesn't have a husband on her Christmas wish list. But when a wandering carpenter finds lodging at her boarding house, she admits that she might remarry if she found the right man--the kind of man who would bring her roses for Christmas. It would take a miracle to get roses during a harsh Wyoming winter. But Christmas, after all, is the time for miracles . . .

Amanda Cabot invites readers to cozy up with a romantic, heartwarming tale of the greatest gift of all--love.

From Jo:

Amanda Cabot gives us a sweet love story for the Christmas season. However, it takes a while for the parties to realize their love. Celia Anderson, a widow for a year, receives advice from the parson's wife and others that her baby needs a father and she needs a husband. But Celia has no desire or plan to remarry. To help her get by financially she turns her home into a boardinghouse but has few boarders. Her new boarder is mighty good looking but is not forthcoming about his anger and hate. Amanda's characters and story are memorable. A good read.

In On Distant Shores, Sarah Sundin takes the reader with detailed accuracy to cities of the Mediterranean area during World War II. Lt. Georgie Taylor is a flight nurse. She has a boyfriend back home and loves her work. She meets Sgt. John Hutchinson, a pharmacist, who has a fiancé back home. Because she's a nurse it's natural that Georgie comes to his pharmacy. As their friendship grows so do complications. He's a noncommissioned soldier, she's a commissioned officer and the military doesn't permit the two groups to socialize. How can they be together in the face of military protocol? Characterization is strong and romantic tension keeps you turning pages.

Bubba walked into a doctor's office and the receptionist asked him what he had. Bubba said: "Shingles." So she wrote down his name, address, medical insurance number and told him to have a seat.

Fifteen minutes later a nurse's aide came out and asked Bubba what he had. Bubba said, "Shingles." So she wrote down his height, weight, a complete medical history and told Bubba to wait in the examining room.

A half hour later a nurse came in and asked Bubba what he had. Bubba said, "Shingles." So the nurse gave Bubba a blood test, a blood pressure test, an electrocardiogram, and told Bubba to take off all his clothes and wait for the doctor.

An hour later the doctor came in and found Bubba sitting patiently in the nude and asked Bubba what he had. Bubba said, "Shingles." The doctor asked, "Where?" Bubba said, "'Outside on the truck. Where do you want me to unload 'em?"

ThoughtsInspirational Insight
Highly Favored
by Jo Huddleston

Mary walked a short distance from the back of her family's house toward a stand of trees. She stopped and stood in the shade of a fig tree, reflecting on her obscure village in the hills of Galilee. Mary was content to help her family all she could around their lowly home, but she always wondered about other people in distant places.

She plucked a pear-shaped fig from the tree and sat, leaning back against its trunk. A light breeze fanned across her face as she bit into the sweet fruit. Mary savored its slight fragrance and gave in to her daydreaming. Like many young girls, she longed for things and places she'd never seen.

Nothing exciting ever happens here in Nazareth. We live in such a sleepy village. I'm sure it's not this dull in Jerusalem or Bethlehem.

In her gentle meditation, Mary's imagination drifted to all the things she wanted to do, things she would never get to do. A smile slipped across her lovely face, bringing her dark eyes to life. Animation filled her expressive features as she thought of a grand life in the city, a husband, a family of her own. But her life was destined to never change. She would become the wife of Joseph, a common carpenter, and remain in Nazareth the rest of her days.

Lulled into her dreary reverie, Mary could never have suspected just how wrong she was. Little did she know her life was intended for something greater than the world had ever known.

Suddenly an angel, Gabriel, stood before Mary. "Mary, God has sent me to you. He favors you above all others. The Lord is with you."

Mary glanced all around, believing that Gabriel spoke to someone else. Why is he greeting me in such a way? She was troubled at Gabriel's words and wondered why he said these flattering words to her.

"You surely aren't speaking to me, are you?"

"Mary, don't be afraid. God has chosen you for a special honor. You will have a son and you are to name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His Father God, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; His kingdom will never end."

Mary said, "Jewish mothers through the ages have longed for this honor, to be the one to bear the Messiah. Why has God given me this privilege?"

"God favors you above all others. You will give birth to the Son of God."

"But how will this be, since I am a virgin?"

The angel answered, "You will be under the influence of the Holy Spirit and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Even your relative Elizabeth is going to have a baby in her old age. You know she was said to be barren and now she is in her sixth month. Nothing is impossible with God."

Mary's heart thrilled at this angelic message that God chose her to impart and mold the human nature of His Son.

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary said to Gabriel. "May it happen as you have said. I will let the Word of God guide my desires."

Soon thereafter, Mary traveled to visit Elizabeth where, together, they praised and glorified God for blessing them each with a child. When time came for Elizabeth's child to be born, Mary returned to Nazareth, believing that the Lord would accomplish in her life what the angel had said to her. Her faith in the Lord calmed her for the task of facing Joseph about her pregnancy.

* * *

"Joseph, Elizabeth is having a baby!"

"That can't be true. She's old and barren. How could this happen?"

"It's a blessing from God in her old age."

"It would have to be so, because it's a miracle," Joseph said.

"Joseph, speaking of miracles, I have something to tell you."

Joseph gave Mary his devoted attention.

"Joseph, an angel visited me before I left to go to Elizabeth. He spoke a message from God to me."

A slight smile crept across Joseph's face.

"What? What are you smiling about?" Mary said.

"Did this angel give you a message about a baby?"

"Yes . . ."

"Mary, an angel came to me also. I know you're with child. And I know the child is sent from God."

"And," Mary said, "we're to name Him Jesus?"

"Yes, Jesus! Mary you are highly favored to be the mother of the Messiah," Joseph said, taking her hands in his.

"You can still marry me?"

"Yes, we will not question the Word of God. This, too, is a divine act from the Lord. We will be a part of the miraculous birth of the promised Savior!"

* * *

Months later, Joseph and Mary journeyed to Bethlehem to register for the ordered census of the entire Roman empire. The crowds who came to the city for the same reason, filled all the places to stay overnight. Finally, Joseph found an innkeeper who allowed them to stay in his stable. Joseph situated Mary in their humble quarters just in time, for that night she delivered her baby boy.

On the hillsides outside of Bethlehem, a host of angels heralded the birth of Jesus to shepherds who came to where the angel said Jesus and His earthly parents would be found. Knowing a Savior had been born, they could do nothing less than tell such good news to everyone they met.

Mary marveled at this holy child from God. I am the mother of the Divine King of the Ages. She watched and listened as the word of her child's birth spread among the people. Mary treasured all these happenings and pondered them in her heart. She would forever be entwined with the One Who is the hope of the world: the promised Messiah, Jesus, forever the infinite meaning of Christmas.
