2. How do you inspire students to practice more?
A genuine interest in music can't necessarily be taught, it has to come from within. So I look for ways the student can develop a stronger sense of connection to what they're learning. Oftentimes during lessons I will perform fragments of advanced pieces to show the student the extent of what's possible on the instrument or to show the application of some concept they are learning. Especially for students at an intermediate level or higher, I also allow for students to be learning songs of their own choosing so that their interest in practicing comes that much more from within.
3. Where did you get your degree/certificate from?
I received a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. My main concentrations were in composition, piano and vocal performance.
4. What is your favorite type of music?
While I had taken piano from an early age, it wasn't until I joined a rock band in high school that I became passionate about music and decided I wanted to become a musician. While I still love the rawness of expression in rock music, beginning in college I became more and more infatuated with the refinement of expression in classical music, which is more my main focus as a musician nowadays.
5. Tell us about any music musical projects you may be working on?
Occasionally I perform in ensembles when called upon, but when I do perform these days it is usually as a solo pianist/vocalist. One project that has been especially worthwhile has been opening and running a performance/gallery space called Phoenix Cafe, featuring open mic/open jam nights twice a week and performances on the weekends. I have met and occasionally collaborated with an amazing network of musicians, artists and other creative minds through Phoenix Cafe.
6. If you could give a quick tip for pianists and vocalists, what would it be?
Get exposed to all kinds of music, not just what you're used to hearing. Listening to the variety of what is out there only adds more colors to your own musical palette and deepens your sense of musical possibilities.
