June, July and August are a great time to continue with private lessons. It's easy to forget most of what you learned throughout the year if you take too much time off. Music is a year round study for serious students. Many students will increase lesson time or schedule twice weekly while they are out of school. Private or group make-up lessons will be available to help you work around your busy schedule.

TEACHER OF THE MONTH:
MATTHEW CALLAWAY
1. What is the thing you like most about teaching?
The thing I like the most about teaching is positively affecting the minds of others. Seeing growth in students is very fulfilling. Sometimes the growth affects other aspects of their lives like confidence, grades, or providing a concise method of accomplishing something.
2. How do you inspire students to practice more?
Passion, If you don't believe in what you do no one else will either. My second year of music school I took a job moving furniture over the summer. Sometimes we worked 18 hours a day but I always practiced 2 hours a day minimum. If I didn't love it I never would have been able to work that hard. I always teach my students to love what they do.
3. Where did you get your degree/certificate from?
I started at a community college which was where I realized I wanted to do music. I took all the music classes they offered including theory, jazz, and classical guitar. A teacher approached me and told me I should study at wayne state so I enrolled the next fall to major in jazz guitar. I also studied composition for several semesters which was really fun.
4. What is your favorite type of music?
I really love all types of music. I have been lucky enough to learn old-time, cajun/zydeco and all sorts of American roots music from one of my mentors Mr. mark palms and his wife Carol. I love jazz, classical, blues, and everything in-between. I have a soft spot for old country though. I really enjoy hearing the influence of other styles of music. Sometimes you can hear jazz or soul influence on a Paul Simon record. Or the way that mo-town records feel because all those cats were originally from the south. Thats what I love most about music.
5. Tell us about any music musical projects you may be working on?
I had a project called House Phone that I was proud of. It was a rock band that took off pretty quick. we worked hard, opened for a few national acts then things fell apart. I currently play for a top 40 group called The Dan Rafferty Band. That group keeps me really busy, lots of fun. I also play in a group called The Sugar Snaps. I accompany a vocalist in the style of 1940's jazz. I love that group because all the weight falls on me. I play bass lines, solos, chord melodies, and anything else I can to fill the sound and push my playing further.
6. If you could give a quick tip for guitarists, what would it be?
Be a jack of all trades and a master of one. Mastering something will give you insight and value, but learning a little of everything will make you versatile and it will never get old.
