Notes from the School Office
Dear South School Community,
The gorgeous glistening trees on Monday morning were second only to the smiles on the children's faces as they jumped right back into the routine of school after vacation. Thank you for sending them back to us ready to learn!
We all hope that you all had a wonderful and relaxing break from the routine last week...as much as your own schedules would allow...
Reading Awareness Week: We have been running the "Nook" reading incentive program all year. There has been a fantastic response to this. Let's keep those numbers up! Thank you for encouraging your children to do their extra reading every evening and returning their "Nook" forms on each Friday. It also counts if you read to them or even read every other page. This is a great way to model fluency and tone while reading! Starting at the Dr. Seuss breakfast on Saturday, we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss, the great children's author, for the rest of the month with special Dr. Seuss awards and a special "Beehive" on Wednesday dedicated to Dr. Seuss stories...
Calendar Notes: Wednesday, March 6, will be the early release for that month. This means that children be dismissed at 1:00p.m... A.M. kindergarten attends and gets dismissed at their usual time. P.M. kindergarten does not attend on that day. Please contact kjordan@hinghamschools.com if you have any KIA questions about that day. School will be closed Friday, March 29, for Good Friday.
MCAS: M.C.A.S. (English Language Arts) officially begins on March 18, and will last until the end of the first week of April. M.C.A.S. (Math and Science) will resume again in May until the 17th. Please consult the updated calendar dated February 1 for specifics about your child's grade level testing areas and days. It is on the PTO and South School Web sites. No visitors are allowed in the building during testing. Please try to keep routines as regular as possible during the testing times. As we all know, children thrive in structured, predictable environments. While on that subject, many of the teachers have been commenting to me about the large number of children who are being removed from school to travel. Family events are of course very important, but it would be so helpful if the school calendar was your guide for vacation times. It is also important for that routine and structure that children need.
Perpetual Special Events Calendar: As the year rushes towards spring and third term, there are many events that will fill our SES calendar...I will use this spot to add them on as they come up:
- Saturday, March 2: Dr. Seuss Breakfast in our cafeteria, 9:30-10:30
- Tuesday, April 2: Math Games and Hobby Night/ café and gym: Time: TBA
- Wednesday, April 10: Fifth grade vs. Staff Floor Hockey Game @HHS: Time: TBA
- Thursday, April 11: Nook Awards Ceremony @ Barnes and Noble @6:00 p.m.
New Safety Concern: Due to the large size of the snow banks, it can be difficult to see children walking on the sidewalk, please be careful if you are backing out of a driveway. Thank you!!!! Hopefully all of this snow will melt soon!!!!
Upcoming Cyber Safety Event: HMS will sponsor an informational night on March 26 concerning the topic of children and cyber safety. It is important to mention that this topic is covered with the children in grades 3-5 in formal computer lessons and through the Steps to Respect and Second Step Programs as well as classroom meetings. Please contact her at jbeausejour@hinghamschools.com if you have any specific questions about cyber safety as she will be happy to help.
Please Help US!!!! Please let all of your friends and neighbors know that the kindergarten registration period for 2013-2014 is from March 4-15. This is also the period during which children who are in kindergarten elsewhere should be registered for first grade. Thank you for helping us to spread the word as knowing our numbers by early May really helps planning class sections for September. Registration forms will be available at our office starting on Monday, March 4. Preschool (@East) Openings: If you are interested in the HPS preschool lottery, contact bcase@hinghamschools.com.
We are so happy to have everyone back! Spring is just around the corner! Have a great week!

Internet Safety
Our children are so fortunate to be growing up in this technological age where so much information is at their fingertips. As we all know, however, the Internet can be very dangerous, especially where elementary age children are concerned. The best way to avoid online danger and inappropriate behavior is to talk to your child before allowing them to use any online device (computer, cell phone, tablets, etc.) Kids look to their parents for guidance, so be clear about your values and expectations of their online behavior. When we talk about online responsibility in computer class, the point that is made continually is that an online remark or photo will exist forever, long after it is taken down from an Internet page or application, since anyone could have copied and /or printed the item seen.
Along these lines, it is important, too, that you monitor your child's online activities daily, not only to ensure appropriate behavior, but also to be sure they are safe. Be sure you know their passwords! They may be making online friends, but it must be stressed that an online "friend" that you have never met face to face is still a "stranger." Impress upon them that personal information must never be given out online, and discourage your child from downloading any games or offers without your consent and presence. You may want to restrict their Internet use to sites and applications that you know to be appropriate to avoid some of these dangers. The amount of time a child spends online should be monitored, and frequently check the history of the web browsers used to see which web sites your child has visited.
It is so important to keep the lines of communication open with your child regarding safety and appropriate use of the Internet. You may even want to have your child sign a contract for Internet safety. Sample contracts may be found online, but feel free to contact me and I'd be happy to provide you with one.

World Language Week This year (March 4-8) South Elementary School will be celebrating World Language Week! During this time we hope that you will join the celebration at home by looking for opportunities to use or learn about world languages and cultures. Here are a few easy suggestions for families: -Encourage your child to teach you what he/she has learned in Spanish class -Help your child see words in other languages on product labels, newspapers, signs or magazines -Play a game together like Candy Land, Memory, or Uno in Spanish or another language that you know -Listen to music, watch movies, and read books in Spanish or other languages -Try a new recipe from another country, or try a restaurant that serves traditional foods from other countries -Label your home with words in other languages, and try using those words in conversations this week -Share travel stories or things you have learned from people of other cultures -"How do you say...?" Check out different websites or translators to find phrases in different languages We wish everyone in our South School Community a wonderful week as we learn about other languages and cultures! Enjoy!
