A Summary of the 9/24/13 Rye City School District Board of Education Meeting

 

Superintendent's Report

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Alvarez shared a brief update, explaining that a number of curriculum initiatives have begun focusing on literacy practices, the Science 21 curriculum, Framework for Teaching model, and other District priorities. He also announced that the Rye High School/Middle School construction work continues to progress, and a second report will be presented to the Board in early December. Additionally, Dr. Alvarez mentioned that the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents has a parent advocacy network, in which the District is exploring a more active role. He concluded his report by noting that the District will unveil a new, generously donated scoreboard on Friday evening, September 27, with a ribbon cutting to be held prior to the football game at Nugent Stadium.   

Gifts to the District 
The Board of Education accepted the gift of a newly-installed scoreboard for Nugent Stadium from the Rye Scoreboard Committee.
Scholarship Fund  
The Board of Education approved the raising of funds for a scholarship fund in memory of George P. Thomas, a RHS 1948 graduate and father of RHS teacher Peter Thomas.
Approval of Strategic Priorities   
The Board of Education approved the 2013-14 Strategic Priorities, outlining goals and objectives for the current school year.
