The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost
October 26, 2014
Collect of the Day

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reflection

There were no formerly heroic times, and there was no formerly pure generation. There is no one here but us chickens, and so it has always been: a people busy and powerful, knowledgeable, ambivalent, important, fearful, and self-aware: a people who scheme, promote, deceive, and conquer; who pray for their loved ones, and long to flee misery and skip death.

It is a weakening and discoloring idea, that rustic people knew God personally once upon a time-or even knew selflessness or courage or literature-but that it is too late for us. In fact, the absolute is available to everyone in every age. There never was a more holy age than ours, and never a less.

SAFEGUARDING GOD'S CHILDREN

On Saturday, November 1 from 9:00am to noon a facilitator from the Diocese of New York will be here to lead a "Safeguarding God's Children" workshop. The program is designed to raise awareness concerning issues of sexual and emotional abuse, and to provide tools for prevention that can be used to protect  children from harm, promote safety, and bring healing. These workshops are required of all clergy in the diocese, and employees, Sunday school teachers, and other volunteers -- particularly those working with children --  are expected/urged to attend when possible. If you are interested in participating, please contact Fr. Owen or the church office.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

One hour a week for several months to help a young boy with a traumatic brain injury from a car accident who is currently recuperating at Northern Manor Nursing home in Nanuet (exit 10 on the PIP). Volunteers need no special training. Weekday morning visits are especially needed to break up long periods alone without stimulation but evenings and weekends also welcome too. Parting Thought
Mysteries, Yes

Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
to be understood.

How grass can be nourishing in the
mouths of the lambs.
How rivers and stones are forever
in allegiance with gravity
while we ourselves dream of rising.
How two hands touch and the bonds will
never be broken.
How people come, from delight or the
scars of damage,
to the comfort of a poem.

Let me keep my distance, always, from those
who think they have the answers.

Let me keep company always with those who say
"Look!" and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.
