St. Michael & All Angels/Sixteenth Sunday After Pentecost
September 28, 2014
Collect of the Day

Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reflection

"People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway. If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.

For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway."

NEXT WEEKEND

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4 - Another memorable FUN(d) RAISER!

El Camino De Santiago - Doors open at 5:30pm

El Camino De Santiago - the Way of St. James - is an ancient pilgrimage route that ends at the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. In 2010, Emilio Estevez wrote, produced, and directed The Way, a movie that tells the story of an American physician who walks El Camino de Santiago himself.   On October 4, we'll screen The Way and members of the Grace community who have walked portions of The Way will share their stories and reflections while we all enjoy a variety of tapas and pintxos - and of course a glass of sangria.  Tickets ($12) will be on sale Sunday at all church services.  Profits from this FUN(d) RAISER will be split between Grace Church and Christ Episcopal Church Tarrytown to support their ministry working with undocumented minors from Central America who are residing at Abbot House  in Irvington, NY (see more below).

If you are interested; e-mail us at jffmcdwll@hotmail.com or give us a call at 845 371 3205.

"I was a stranger and you welcomed me."

Abbot House, a facility in Westchester, is now providing transitional housing for unaccompanied children who have arrived in the U.S. from Central America. Within the next month it is expected that they will be housing as many as 30 young boys (14-17 years old) and 20 mothers and babies. Christ Church in Tarrytown has initiated a program to visit the children, and they can use donations of  backpacks and art supplies as well as money to purchase sneakers and cleats (the boys are huge soccer fans.) We have also been invited to join volunteers in visiting the children on Sunday afternoons. If you'd like more information or would like to be part of a group visiting the children, please contact the office.

There is a box available  for donated items at the church entrance. If you'd like to make a financial donation, please make check out to Grace Church with Abbott House on the memo line.

Thank You!

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5 - FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

In observance of the feast day of St Francis, on Sunday, October 5 you are welcome to bring your pet to be blessed at any of the three morning services. Stuffed beasts or photographs are also welcome. In place of regular church school classes, there will be special "pet-centric" activities organized by the junior youth group outside following the 9:30am family service. Does your pet have a short attention span?  This year you may also bring your animal to be blessed outside in Memorial Garden, any time between 12:30 and 1:45pm. All creatures great and small are welcome, just make sure they are on a leash or secured safely!

FIRST AT FOUR: CHORAL EVENSONG

On the first Sunday of the month at 4:00pm, the Grace Choir leads the traditional Anglican service of sung evening prayer with hymns, canticles, and anthems.  After a busy weekend, come be refreshed by the service's simplicity, beauty, and stillness at the close of day.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19: ANNUAL PARISH HIKE

We'll meet at 2:00pm at St. John's-in-the-Wilderness, enjoy an easy walk through the woods of Harriman Park, and return to the cozy barn for a potluck supper in front of the big stone fireplace. Plan to bring something to share for supper. If you have questions, call Win at 845-358-0552.

Reminders

HEALING & WELLNESS SERVICE ON OCTOBER 1

Jesus said, "Come unto me all you who are weary and carrying a heavy burden, and I will give you rest. . .(Matthew 11:28)

Healing and wellness is a vital and often under-appreciated aspect of the Christian faith and life. Indeed, a great portion of Christ's ministry and witness was dedicated to healing the sick. Moreover, through Christ, God revealed His intention and desire for us know the power of His restorative and transformative grace, mercy, and love. Jesus never turned away any who were seeking to be healed, strengthened, comforted, and renewed.   In short, healing is a part of God's divine plan for the salvation of the world. The Apostles continued the ministry of healing through laying on of hands and prayers, and the ministry continues to this day both within and outside of the life of the Church. As we encounter the daily happenings of life that stress and strain the body and soul, I invite you to come into the presence of God that you may feel God's embrace, and the know the power of God's healing, comforting, nourishing, and sustaining love.

On the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of every month, Grace Church is offering a Healing and Wellness Service in Bradley Chapel at 7:00 pm. All are welcome and encouraged to participate in the laying on of hands and the prayers.  Fr. Owen

Parting Thought
The Inner History of a Day
John O'Donohue

No one knew the name of this day;
Born quietly from deepest night,
It hid its face in light,
Demanded nothing for itself,
Opened out to offer each of us
A field of brightness that traveled ahead,
Providing in time, ground to hold our footsteps
And the light of thought to show the way.

The mind of the day draws no attention;
It dwells within the silence with elegance
To create a space for all our words,
Drawing us to listen inward and outward.

We seldom notice how each day is a holy place
Where the eucharist of the ordinary happens,
Transforming our broken fragments
Into an eternal continuity that keeps us.

Somewhere in us a dignity presides
That is more gracious than the smallness
That fuels us with fear and force,
A dignity that trusts the form a day takes.

So at the end of this day, we give thanks
For being betrothed to the unknown
And for the secret work
Through which the mind of the day
And wisdom of the soul become one.
