Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost - September 7, 2014
|
Collect of the Day
Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Community means caring: caring for people. Dietrich Bonhoeffer says: "He who loves community destroys community; he who loves the brethren builds community." A community is not an abstract ideal. We are not striving for perfect community. Community is not an ideal; it is people. It is you and I. In community we are called to love people just as they are with their wounds and their gifts, not as we would want them to be. Community means giving them space, helping them to grow. It means also receiving from them so that we too can grow. It is giving each other freedom; it is giving each other trust; it is confirming but also challenging each other. We give dignity to each other by the way we listen to each other, in a spirit of trust and of dying to oneself so that the other may live, grow and give.

SAVE THE DATE For another memorable FUN(d) RAISER!
Saturday, October 4 Doors open at 5:30pm
El Camino De Santiago - the Way of St. James - is an ancient pilgrimage route that ends at the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. In 2010, Emilio Estevez wrote, produced, and directed The Way, a movie that tells the story of an American physician who walks El Camino de Santiago himself. On October 4, we'll screen The Way and members of the Grace community who have walked portions of The Way will share their stories and reflections while we all enjoy a variety of tapas and pintxos - and of course a glass of sangria. Tickets ($12) will go on sale at the Ministry Fair of Sunday, September 14. Profits from this FUN(d) RAISER will be split between Grace Church and Christ Episcopal Church Tarrytown to support their ministry working with undocumented minors from Central America who are residing at Abbot House in Irvington, NY (see more below). If you are interested; e-mail us at jffmcdwll@hotmail.com or give us a call at 845 371 3205.
"I was a stranger and you welcomed me."
Abbot House, a facility in Westchester, is now providing transitional housing for unaccompanied children who have arrived in the U.S. from Central America. Within the next month it is expected that they will be housing as many as 30 young boys (14-17 years old) and 20 mothers and babies. Christ Church in Tarrytown has initiated a program to visit the children, and they can use donations of backpacks and art supplies as well as money to purchase sneakers and cleats (the boys are huge soccer fans.) We have also been invited to join volunteers in visiting the children on Sunday afternoons. If you'd like more information or would like to be part of a group visiting the children, please contact the office.
There is a box available for donated items at the church entrance. If you'd like to make a financial donation, please make check out to Grace Church with Abbott House on the memo line.
The first delivery of donated items will be made to Christ Church next week, so bring your items to church on Sunday, or to the office by Wednesday, September 10.
Thank You!

The summer ends, and it is time To face another way. Our theme Reversed, we harvest the last row To store against the cold, undo The garden that will be undone. We grieve under the weakened sun To see all earth's green fountains dried, And fallen all the works of light. You do not speak, and I regret This downfall of the good we sought As though the fault were mine. I bring The plow to turn the shattering Leaves and bent stems into the dark, From which they may return. At work, I see you leaving our bright land, The last cut flowers in your hand.
"The Summer Ends" by Wendell Berry, from A Timbered Choir.
