Tenth Sunday After Pentecost - August 17, 2014
|
Collect of the Day
Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Of course the Church is conservative for it has so much to conserve. But let it conserve a vision of the world's destiny and not the structures of the world's past. Let the Church in remembering Christ remember that it is conserving the most uprooting, the most revolutionary force in all human history. For it was Christ who crossed every boundary, broke down every barrier. He crossed the boundaries of class by eating with the outcasts. He crossed the boundary of nations by pointing to a Samaritan as the agent of God's will. He transgressed religious boundaries by claiming that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. Everywhere he manifested his freedom and called others to theirs, calling them forth from family, national, and religious loyalty to the world at large. If ever there was a man who trusted his origins and had the courage to emerge from them, it was Christ.
From Credo by William Sloane Coffin

CORNER STONE CAMPAIGN
JOIN US AT THE RECTORY ON AUGUST 21 TO LEARN MORE
You may have noticed the scaffolding around our beautiful church recently and the attention we are giving to the stonework. Our life together at Grace is a life of seeking, witness, reconciliation, and community. Our building keeps us dry in the rains and warm in the winter storms. It stands as a beacon of welcome and hope for our community. We hope that you will make a contribution to our building fund - The Cornerstone Campaign - this summer. The fund will allow us to care for our stones, the side and front doors, the roof, as well as other projects essential in the care of our church home. We have $80,000 to raise for the first phase of work and $32,000 has already been pledged or dedicated to the project.
We invite you to join us at the Rectory on August 21 at 6:30pm to learn more about the work that needs to be done and how you can help. Please RSVP as soon as possible to Thayer in the office at 845.358.1297 or at twoodcock@gracechurchnyack.org.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF JOINING OUR TEAM OF CHURCH SCHOOL TEACHERS?
Each year new parents and other volunteers join our team of church school teachers. No previous teaching experience is needed, and you don't need to have kids in the church school. Each grade level is assigned three teachers to enable a rotation that requires teaching no more than every third week from 10:15 to 11:00 on Sundays. We're working on finding a fun and easy new curriculum to make the teaching experience better than ever. This year we are in greatest need of teachers to help with our Junior Youth Group (middle school age).
There will be a church school teachers' meeting on Saturday, September 13 at 9am where you will learn all that you need to know. Church school registration is Sunday, September 14, and church school starts Sunday, September 21 following the 9:30 service. You can also register your child(ren) online ahead of time. Click here to go to our online registration form. Please e-mail or Lainie Murrell if you'd like to know more!

With Her
By Pablo Neruda
This time is difficult. Wait for me.
We will live it out vividly.
Give me your small hand:
we will rise and suffer,
we will feel, we will rejoice.
We are once more the pair
who lived in bristling places,
in harsh nests in the rock.
This time is difficult. Wait for me
with a basket, with a shovel,
with your shoes and your clothes.
Now we need each other,
not only for the carnations' sake,
not only to look for honey---
we need our hands
to wash with, to make fire.
So let our difficult time
stand up to infinity
with four hands and four eyes.
