The Second Sunday of EasterApril 27, 2014
Collect of the Day
Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ's Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reflection

In the New Testament, Jesus asks everyone to change. With the exception of children, Jesus insists that every person he meets do something and change. The whole message of the Christian scripture is based in the idea of metanoia, the change of heart that happens when we meet God face-to-face. Even a cursory knowledge of history reveals that Christianity is a religion about change. The Christian faith always changes - even when some of its adherents claim that it does not.

LENT GIVING PROJECT -  LAST DAY FOR DONATIONS IS SUNDAY

There's still time to make a donation or bring in money collected for our Church School Lent Giving Project, which goes to People to People - Rockland County's largest food bank -  this year. We will be collecting money through today - you can find the donation box in the entry to the church. This recent article helps explain why your donation today is more important than ever.

FUN(D) RAISER BRAINSTORMING MEETING

Sunday AT 10:15am

The Great Salmon Throw Down last month was the first of what we hope will be a series of events and activities intended to bring together members of the Grace community - to play, to laugh, to engage, sometimes to eat and drink, and  always to enjoy each other's companionship - and to do so in a way that builds our church's resources and allows us to assist other worthy causes.

Sunday we'll have an open meeting for members of the community who would like to brainstorm ideas for more FUN(d RAISERS.  Events could include, but would not be limited to:

¨ More throw downs; bake offs; and other food events;

¨ Movie night - a movie, refreshments, and discussion to follow;

¨ Dance night - pop, jazz, ballroom, Line, Square, Irish  Céilidh;

¨ Game night - play Monopoly, Scrabble, card games;

¨ The possibilities are limited only by our  imagination, inspiration & energy.

A FUN(d) RAISER doesn't have to raise hundreds of dollars or hundreds of

people.  Smaller events for 20 or 30 people can be FUN(d) RAISERS too.  We are hoping that a variety of folks at Grace will collaborate to design, organize and sponsor FUN(d) RAISERS that reflect the different interests and skills of our community.

So bring your ideas and join us in the Choir Room on Sunday!

WELCOME BRUNCH AT THE RECTORY

Are you relatively new to the Grace Church community? Perhaps you've been coming for awhile but are wondering how to become more involved, or have questions about who does what, or what goes on here beyond the Sunday services.  Next Sunday, May 4, the New Member Ministry commission will host a welcome brunch and coffee for those who wish to find out more about Grace and meet some of the parish leadership. The informal gathering will run from10:15am to 1:00pm at the rectory (at the corner of First and Franklin, on the other side of the memorial garden) and you're welcome to stop by at anytime. We look forward to meeting you!  Please let us know if you plan to attend.

FIRST AT FOUR: Choral Evensong next Sunday

On the first Sunday of each month, October through May, the Grace Choir leads the traditional Anglican service of sung evening prayer with hymns, canticles, and anthems.   Rooted in the monastic tradition, Evensong is a unique offering of the Episcopal Church.  Across the world, people revel in the service's simplicity, beauty, and stillness at the close of the day.   Join the clergy and choir in the sacred stillness of the church on Sunday, May 4 for a peaceful interlude of quiet reflection.

ANNUAL ECW LUNCHEON

The annual Episcopal Church Women's luncheon will take place on Monday, May 5  at St. John's in New City. Yes, men are welcome too!  The event begins with a Eucharist at 11:00am, followed by lunch at 11:45am ($4).  The celebrant and speaker will be the Rev. Richard Gressle.  For more information or to reserve a place:  845-267-8006.

St. John's is one of the few area churches in the area to have an active ECW chapter, which meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month -- September to June --  at 7:00pm, with regularly scheduled speakers and presentations.   They welcome visitors from other parishes for discussion and fellowship.  More HERE

SAVE YOUR STUFF!

The Senior Youth Group Rummage Sale to benefit the Church Youth Service Mission (CYSM) trip -- which this year will be to Nicaragua -- will be on Sunday, May 18 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. For more information, contact Moriah Olsen (moriahso@yahoo.com.)

ONLY FOUR TICKETS LEFT FOR BOSCOBEL OUTING

The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival evening is selling out fast! We already have 21 seats taken of the 25 reserved so don't miss out. The Liar will delight us with mistaken identities, a jealous lover, a compulsive liar, sword play, word play and unforgettable fun. Barbara Cross is still taking reservations for the 7:00pm performance on Sunday, June 29, with our usual picnicking on the lovely grounds of Boscobel starting at 5:00 pm, weather permitting. Contact her ASAP: call her @845- 358-4599 or send an e-mail to  babcross@aol.com. You may also call the church office (845-358-1297, ext. 10) or send Thayer an email (twoodcock@gracechurchnyack.org) to reserve.  Then write a check ($35.00 per ticket) to Grace Episcopal Church (Shakespeare on memo line), hand it in or mail to the church office. Once we reach our 25 reservations, you are still welcome to join us but you must buy your tickets separately online or by calling the box office at 845-265-9575. If you call the box office, you can mention our Grace Church group and perhaps that will help with seats close to us. Parting Thought

Kneeling

By R. S. Thomas

Moments of great calm,

Kneeling before an altar

Of wood in a stone church

In summer, waiting for the God

To speak; the air a staircase

For silence; the sun's light

Ringing me, as though I acted

A great role. And the audiences

Still; all that close throng

Of spirits waiting, as I,

For the message.

                         Prompt me, God;

But not yet. When I speak,

Though it be you who speak

Through me, something is lost.

The meaning is in the waiting.

R. S. Thomas, "Kneeling" from The Collected Later Poems: 1988-2000
