The Second Sunday of LentMarch 16, 2014
Collect of the Day

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reflection

Singing in the midst of evil is what it means to be disciples. Like Mary Magdalene, the reason we stand and weep and listen for Jesus is because we, like Mary, are bearers of resurrection, we are made new. On the third day, Jesus rose again, and we do not need to be afraid. To sing to God amidst sorrow is to defiantly proclaim, like Mary Magdalene did to the apostles, and like my friend Don did at Dylan Klebold's funeral,that death is not the final word. To defiantly say, once again, that a light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot, will not, shall not overcome it. And so, evil be damned, because even as we go to the grave, we still make our song alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia."

All I have is a voice To undo the folded lie, The romantic lie in the brain Of the sensual man-in-the-street And the lie of Authority Whose buildings grope the sky: There is no such thing as the State And no one exists alone; Hunger allows no choice To the citizen or the police; We must love one another or die. Defenceless under the night Our world in stupor lies; Yet, dotted everywhere, Ironic points of light Flash out wherever the Just Exchange their messages: May I, composed like them Of Eros and of dust, Beleaguered by the same Negation and despair, Show an affirming flame. - See more at: http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15545#sthash.Mb1d4oyV.dpuf

Announcements

CHURCH SCHOOL LENT GIVING PROGRAM

This year for Lent the church school is raising money for People to People, Rockland's largest food pantry.   In addition to collecting change at home, they'll be hosting regular bake sales during coffee hour between the 9:30am and 11:00am services, so make sure to come hungry and prepared each week! The first sale will be next week, hosted by the 4's-1st grade class.  Learn more about People to People and its program HERE

PARISH HALL ACCESS

For many years the parish hall and offices have routinely been open from 9:00am until late evening lockup. For many of these hours there has been no "official" presence in the building.  Due to a number of recent destructive incidents and concerns, we are working to improve our security and minimize open access.  Please note that going forward the building will routinely be open only during office hours (9:00am-4:00pm, M-Th) and when there are scheduled activities.  We apologize for any inconvenience as we all adjust to this new reality and work to fine-tune a system that both maintains our availability and welcome while allowing us to be faithful stewards of the resources in our care.

Reminders
WHY LORD!?  Human Suffering & A Loving God
Wednesday Evening Lenten Program - March 12, 19, & 26 - 5:45-8:15pm
Continues this week

As human beings all of us have experienced suffering individually and collectively, and as a result all of us have perhaps wondered why does a loving God allow this to happen to us.  This Lenten course is designed to  explore this most profound question and aspect of human life from the
context of scripture and from the perspective of our shared stories.

Please join us as we look at this difficult and fascinating topic, and attempt to better understand this age-old question/lamentation.

The course starts this Wednesday, March 12.  We will begin each evening with a light supper and end with compline in the chapel..

NEW PROGRAM FOR ST. CECILIA YOUTH CHOIR

We have a new program  for kids interested in singing with the St. Cecelia choir (3rd graders and up--very dedicated 2nd graders can also come).  Starting Wednesday, March 12 through Lent,  we will have rehearsals on Wednesdays at 5:00pm in the choir room, ending just in time for the Lenten dinner that begins at 5:45pm. The children will be practicing for a special presentation on Easter Sunday. This opportunity will continue until Easter, and there will be no Sunday morning St. Cecelia's rehearsals from now until April 20.

SAVE THE DATE FOR A DIFFERENT FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE

Newsflash: Mark your calendars now for Sunday, June 29 for our 16th Fellowship outing to Boscobel and the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. Our play this year is a change from the norm, The Liar by David Ives, adapted from the comedy by Pierre Corneille. So it's not our usual Shakespeare experience but it's sure to be a rollicking good time!   More details to follow in the April Messenger.

Parting Thought

All I have is a voice

To undo the folded lie,

The romantic lie in the brain

Of the sensual man-in-the-street

And the lie of Authority

Whose buildings grope the sky:

There is no such thing as the State

And no one exists alone;

Hunger allows no choice

To the citizen or the police;

We must love one another or die.

Defenceless under the night

Our world in stupor lies;

Yet, dotted everywhere,

Ironic points of light

Flash out wherever the Just

Exchange their messages:

May I, composed like them

Of Eros and of dust,

Beleaguered by the same

Negation and despair,

Show an affirming flame.
